Anna Meacham 208 344.7849 X222 Marketing@Boisephil.Org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hollis Welsh, Executive Director Media Contact: Anna Meacham 208 344.7849 x222 [email protected] BOISE PHIL REVEALS NEW VISUAL IDENTITY BEFORE LAUNCH OF AMBITIOUS SEASON AUGUST 10, 2018, BOISE, ID—The Boise Philharmonic rolls out their new brand and visual identity this week, as a prelaunch to the start of their masterful 2018-2019 season, which opens on September 7 and 8. The vibrant new branding reflects the ambitious plans set in place by Music Director Eric Garcia, beginning his second season with the orchestra. The new brand is infused with the tag “discover, delight, connect” and encourages new and seasoned patrons alike to “join the musical adventure!”. From September through May, the Maestro and orchestra will present deep explorations of Beethoven, Prokofiev, Bernstein and Sibelius as part of their Classical Series, and will launch a multi-season cycle of the complete Brahms symphonies. Each concert will showcase the talents of the Boise Phil musicians in a new way, some adventurous, some thoughtful, but all inspiring. In Music Director Garcia’s words, “We are so very thrilled to begin what promises to the Boise Phil’s best season yet. We have an incredible line up of guest performers and concerts that guarantee to exhilarate and inspire. Our new brand is a true representation of the exciting journey we have in store!” The Boise Phil worked with Boise design house W Design and designer Kristy Wehyrich to achieve the new look and feel. The visuals employ bold colors and lively photography of the orchestra, along with a new logo that shortens the name to the more familiar “Boise Phil”. With a new brand, new season, and new Executive Director, the organization is ready to more deep- ly connect with the Treasure Valley community via its new In Roads programming. New performances will be added to the season lineup, including solo recitals by principal musicians, collaborations with Treefort and Story Story Night, and the new three-concert Pops Series featuring the film Star Wars: A New Hope screened with the score played live by the orchestra. Executive Director Hollis Welsh said, “We’re very excited to launch our new brand to set the stage for our most exciting season yet. It really is about adventure this season, and about opening our doors to more people in more innovative and inviting ways. Our goal is to be as accessible as we can to as many people in the Treasure Valley as possible, and we hope our new brand conveys that. You are welcome here, and we want to connect with you. And, if you can’t come to us, we’ll find ways to come to you.” Please visit the new website at www.boisephil.org for more information. The very first piece of the opening concert, Masquerade, was written by 38-year-old Anna Clyne, a London native known for her unusual methods and dazzling inventive- ness. The orchestra will also play John Adams’ The Chairman Dances and Sean Shepherd’s Songs, the latter of which will be performed for only the second time on a concert stage. Interview with Timothy McAllister: Gershwin, Adams, and the Orchestral Saxophone with Lisa Keeney Extended Interview In September 2016, the University of Michigan’s University Symphony Orchestra (USO) performed a concert program with the works of two major American composers: John Adams and George Gershwin. The USO premiered both the new edition of Concerto in F and the Unabridged Edition of An American in Paris created by the UM Gershwin Initiative. This program also featured Adams’ The Chairman Dances and his Saxophone Concerto with soloist Timothy McAllister, for whom the concerto was written. This interview took place in August 2016 as a promotion for the concert and was published on the Gershwin Initiative’s YouTube channel with the help of Novus New Music, Inc. The following is a full transcription of the extended interview, now available on the Gershwin channel on YouTube. Dr. Timothy McAllister is the professor of saxophone at the University of Michigan. In addition to being the featured soloist of John Adams’ Saxophone Concerto, he has been a frequent guest with ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Lisa Keeney is a saxophonist and researcher; an alumna of the University of Michigan, she works as an editing assistant for the UM Gershwin Initiative and also independently researches Gershwin’s relationship with the saxophone. ORCHESTRAL SAXOPHONE LK: Let’s begin with a general question: what is the orchestral saxophone, and why is it considered an anomaly or specialty instrument in orchestral music? TM: It’s such a complicated past that we have with the saxophone.

In other passages textural and registral formations imply a single triad or seventh chord, but additional pcs obscure this chord to some degree.
