The Culture of Queers
THE CULTURE OF QUEERS For around a hundred years up to the Stonewall riots, the word for gay men was ‘queers’. From screaming queens to sensitive vampires and sad young men, and from pulp novels and pornography to the films of Fassbinder, The Culture of Queers explores the history of queer arts and media. Richard Dyer traces the contours of queer culture, examining the differ- ences and continuities with the gay culture which succeeded it. Opening with a discussion of the very concept of ‘queers’, he asks what it means to speak of a sexual grouping having a culture and addresses issues such as gay attitudes to women and the notion of camp. Dyer explores a range of queer culture, from key topics such as fashion and vampires to genres like film noir and the heritage film, and stars such as Charles Hawtrey (outrageous star of the Carry On films) and Rock Hudson. Offering a grounded historical approach to the cultural implications of queerness, The Culture of Queers both insists on the negative cultural con- sequences of the oppression of homosexual men and offers a celebration of queer resistance. Richard Dyer is Professor of Film Studies at The University of Warwick. He is the author of Stars (1979), Now You See It: Studies in Lesbian and Gay Film (Routledge 1990), The Matter of Images (Routledge 1993) and White (Routledge 1997). Jerry Douglas's Tubstrip and the Erotic Theatre of Gay Liberation
The Journal of American Drama and Theatre (JADT) https://jadt.commons.gc.cuny.edu Legitimate: Jerry Douglas's Tubstrip and the Erotic Theatre of Gay Liberation by Jordan Schildcrout The Journal of American Drama and Theatre Volume 30, Number 1 (Fall 2017) ISNN 2376-4236 ©2017 by Martin E. Segal Theatre Center From 1969 to 1974, after the premiere of Mart Crowley’s landmark gay play The Boys in the Band (1968) and before the establishment of an organized gay theatre movement with companies such as Doric Wilson’s TOSOS (The Other Side of Silence), there flourished a subgenre of plays that can best be described as gay erotic theatre. While stopping short of performing sex acts on stage, these plays featured copious nudity, erotic situations, and forthright depictions of gay desire. In the early years of gay liberation, such plays pushed at the boundaries between the “legitimate” theatre and pornography, and in the process created the most exuberant and affirming depictions of same-sex sexuality heretofore seen in the American theatre. Some of these works were extremely popular with gay audiences, but almost all were dismissed by mainstream critics, never published, and rarely revived. The most widely seen of these plays was Tubstrip (1973), written and directed by Jerry Douglas, whose career in the early 1970s was situated squarely at the intersection of legitimate theatre and pornography. An analysis of Tubstrip and its groundbreaking production history can illuminate an important but often overlooked chapter in the development of gay theatre in America. Tubstrip (which can be read “tub strip” or “tubs trip”) is a risqué farce set in a gay bathhouse, written by “A. -

The Bulge That Dare Not Speak Its Name: Camp, Clones, and the Evolution of the Gay Superhero
THE BULGE THAT DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME: CAMP, CLONES, AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE GAY SUPERHERO By Sarah Margaret Panuska A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Literature in English – Master of Arts 2013 ABSTRACT THE BULGE THAT DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME: CAMP, CLONES, AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE GAY SUPERHERO By Sarah Margaret Panuska In the last decade, there has been dramatic increase in the number of homosexual superheroes, or hero-characters that proclaim their same-sex status within comic book panels. While there is certainly an impulse to view this trend as step forward for political and social equality for the gay community, there is a need to consider both the compressive effects of commercialization on gay representation and how purportedly gay characters resonate culturally for gays. Cultural gayness, it will be argued, goes beyond a same-sex object of desire. Accordingly, camp, as a gay practice of appropriation, will be examined to demonstrate a how a particular character-type with origins in gay clone pornography has certain similarities to the modern day homosexual superhero. Copyright by SARAH MARGARET PANUSKA 2013 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have been tremendously lucky to receive support throughout the research and writing of this thesis. I would like to thank Dr. Scott Michaelsen, my advisor. It was a pleasure to work with you on this larger project, and your support, ideas, feedback, and enthusiasm were invaluable to me. Additionally, the emotional support and encouragement that was offered to me from my colleagues and professors at the Department of English was greatly appreciated. -
