Siempre te estaré agradecido! 7 8 Résumé POLTIQUES IDENTITAIRES LGBTQ ET CAPITALISME : HISTOIRES CROISÉES DU MARCHÉ GAY ET DE L’ACTIVISME La communauté lesbienne, gay, bisexuelle et transsexuelle (LGBT) a su devenir incontournable aux États-Unis en très peu de temps. Sur la scène politique, de nombreuses victoires ont transformé la perception des minorités sexuelles qui sont de plus en plus acceptées, ont obtenu le mariage et font partie de la société américaine. Nous nous interrogeons sur les raisons qui ont permis cette évolution si rapide. Nous considérons que c’est le système économique capitaliste qui a favorisé ces changements. La création d’un marché spécifique puis son ouverture au marché mainstream ont transformé le regard porté sur une communauté autrefois ostracisée ou invisible. Nous observons dans ce travail de recherche les bénéfices et les inconvénients d’un activisme par la consommation et les réactions des différents mouvements LGBT et queer qui ont vu le jour au XXe siècle. Mots-clés : homosexualité, LGBT, queer, capitalisme, politique identitaire, marché, consumérisme, classes sociales, minorités raciales, intersectionnalité, discriminations. 9 10 Résumé en anglais LGBTQ IDENTITY POLITICS AND CAPITALISM : THE LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GAY MARKET AND ACTIVISM The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community has rapidely become part of American Society. It has won many battles—among them the right to get married—which have changed the way sexual minorities are now seen. Gay culture is everywhere in magazines, in Hollywood, on TV, and we can wonder what were the reasons for such an evolution. We consider that the way the community has understood capitalism enabled those changes. From the creation of a market and its recognition by the mainstream, LGBT people are now consumer activists. We analyse in this PhD dissertation the benefits and setbacks of that activism with regards to the different waves of LGBTQ movements in the twentieth century. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies University of Toronto 2015 ABSTRACT Lesbian and gay archives, particularly those established within the context of the homophile, gay liberation, and lesbian feminist movements, serve as social movement organizations (SMOs). That is, they are organizational and administrative members of activist communities that acquire, manage, and share resources for the purpose of collective action for social change. Archives are nevertheless absent from literature on social movements and social movement theory. This project was designed to expand on current research in the fields of archival studies, social movement studies, and sexuality studies to better understand the experiences of lesbian and gay archives. A multiple case study was conducted at four community grown archives: The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives, the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives, and the Lesbian Herstory Archives. Site visits took place over six months in 2013 and 2014, during which time interviews were conducted with 33 community archivists, volunteers, and community partners. In addition, more than 20,000 pages of organizational records related to the founding and development of these archives were reviewed. By tracing the emergence, development, and resource struggles of four lesbian and gay archives, this dissertation shows how these organizations have been shaped by broader movement goals, local geographies, socio-political structures, and the particular interests and energies of those who have nurtured their collections over the years.

    THE CULTURE OF QUEERS For around a hundred years up to the Stonewall riots, the word for gay men was ‘queers’. From screaming queens to sensitive vampires and sad young men, and from pulp novels and pornography to the films of Fassbinder, The Culture of Queers explores the history of queer arts and media. Richard Dyer traces the contours of queer culture, examining the differ- ences and continuities with the gay culture which succeeded it. Opening with a discussion of the very concept of ‘queers’, he asks what it means to speak of a sexual grouping having a culture and addresses issues such as gay attitudes to women and the notion of camp.
