For Immediate Release Wednesday, August 15, 2018 FIN Atlantic International Film Festival announces full festival program for event, Sept. 13 - 20 in Halifax (Halifax, NS) – FIN Atlantic International Film Festival announced its full program today, featuring over 125 film screenings and a full slate of special events, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 13-20. "Bingeing has become the term for spending countless hours watching television but truth be told - film festivals have always been the ‘binge’”, said Wayne Carter, Executive Director. “The best way to experience the magic of a film festival is specifically to buy a pass and spend an extended amount of time seeing films, documentaries and shorts that will surprise, enlighten and entertain you. So this is our invitation this year - binge on us! We are even going to make it easy with daily passes that are an excuse to skip work and all your responsibilities of the day and get lost in ideas and excitement. And this year we have excitement!” The Opening Night Gala returns to the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium at the Dalhousie Arts Centre on Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. Splinters, directed by celebrated Halifax filmmaker Thom Fitzgerald, has been selected as the Festival’s Opening Night Gala presentation. Splinters tells the story of Belle as she returns to her parents’ apple orchard in Nova Scotia for her father’s funeral. Having caused her mother, Nancy, considerable consternation when she came out as a lesbian in her teens, Belle is now desperate to keep her secret two-year relationship with a man secret.

Tab Hunter Confidential, LLC. “TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL” FEBRUARY 25, 2015 TRANSCRIBED BY: WORD OF MOUTH (RL) [00:00:26] TAB HUNTER : I would go out occasionally to a cocktail party and I was fascinated by all of what I saw there. There were a few guys dancing with a few guys, a couple of gals dancing with a couple of gals. It was just a party and people were dancing and having a good time. Parties like this were illegal. [00:00:53] And then the next thing I know the cops came in. Doors burst open, there they were. They were arresting a bunch of, uh, queers. They took us down to the police station. You know, I thought oh my God, this is terrible. I thought what would my mother think of my being arrested? Will it affect this career that I’m trying to get started in motion pictures? [00:01:27] An attorney, Harry Weiss appeared. He was well known for taking care of situations like that with many, many Hollywood people. He said you gotta be a lot sharper than you are. You’re in Hollywood now, you want to be an actor, and really laid down the Tab Hunter Confidential - 2 law to me. And then I was released. I had no idea it was gonna jump up and be thrown out at me years later. [00:01:57] [FILM CLIP] DICK CLARK : Here’s the young fellow you’ve been waiting for. Ladies and gentleman, Tab Hunter. VOICEOVER : Six feet of rugged manhood to stir the heart of every woman.

  • The Culture of Queers
THE CULTURE OF QUEERS For around a hundred years up to the Stonewall riots, the word for gay men was ‘queers’. From screaming queens to sensitive vampires and sad young men, and from pulp novels and pornography to the films of Fassbinder, The Culture of Queers explores the history of queer arts and media. Richard Dyer traces the contours of queer culture, examining the differ- ences and continuities with the gay culture which succeeded it. Opening with a discussion of the very concept of ‘queers’, he asks what it means to speak of a sexual grouping having a culture and addresses issues such as gay attitudes to women and the notion of camp. Dyer explores a range of queer culture, from key topics such as fashion and vampires to genres like film noir and the heritage film, and stars such as Charles Hawtrey (outrageous star of the Carry On films) and Rock Hudson. Offering a grounded historical approach to the cultural implications of queerness, The Culture of Queers both insists on the negative cultural con- sequences of the oppression of homosexual men and offers a celebration of queer resistance. Richard Dyer is Professor of Film Studies at The University of Warwick. He is the author of Stars (1979), Now You See It: Studies in Lesbian and Gay Film (Routledge 1990), The Matter of Images (Routledge 1993) and White (Routledge 1997). The Journal of American Drama and Theatre (JADT) https://jadt.commons.gc.cuny.edu Legitimate: Jerry Douglas's Tubstrip and the Erotic Theatre of Gay Liberation by Jordan Schildcrout The Journal of American Drama and Theatre Volume 30, Number 1 (Fall 2017) ISNN 2376-4236 ©2017 by Martin E. Segal Theatre Center From 1969 to 1974, after the premiere of Mart Crowley’s landmark gay play The Boys in the Band (1968) and before the establishment of an organized gay theatre movement with companies such as Doric Wilson’s TOSOS (The Other Side of Silence), there flourished a subgenre of plays that can best be described as gay erotic theatre. While stopping short of performing sex acts on stage, these plays featured copious nudity, erotic situations, and forthright depictions of gay desire. In the early years of gay liberation, such plays pushed at the boundaries between the “legitimate” theatre and pornography, and in the process created the most exuberant and affirming depictions of same-sex sexuality heretofore seen in the American theatre. Some of these works were extremely popular with gay audiences, but almost all were dismissed by mainstream critics, never published, and rarely revived. The most widely seen of these plays was Tubstrip (1973), written and directed by Jerry Douglas, whose career in the early 1970s was situated squarely at the intersection of legitimate theatre and pornography. An analysis of Tubstrip and its groundbreaking production history can illuminate an important but often overlooked chapter in the development of gay theatre in America. Tubstrip (which can be read “tub strip” or “tubs trip”) is a risqué farce set in a gay bathhouse, written by “A.

ABRIR VOLUMEN I UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID FACULTAD DE FILOLOGÍA VIDA Y OBRA DE JUAN ANTONIO CASTRO ABRAHAM MADROÑAL DURÁN VOL. II TESIS DOCTORAL 1992 532 CAPITULO VI.4.

Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. Geordie (Thom Fitzgerald), a visiting Canadian pornographer, Bogdan (Mihai Calota), a reluctant city dog-catcher, and Nathalie (Alberta Watson), the lonely wife of a diplomat, each risks losing everything as they become embroiled in the struggles of Bucharest's abandoned children, gypsies, dogs and beggars. 2 Production Notes From the Director… “Why did I want to make a film about dogs? (furrows his brow to think, then)…I like dogs. Life has taught me that all men are dogs and all women are bitches. Not every day, of course. But often enough to make a good movie about it. When you strip away the luxuries of wealth and culture, and see people struggling to survive, it confirms that people are animals. And then if you look closer, even when they are rich and cultured, they’re still animals. I was working in Romania on a teen slasher movie. The Hollywood executives kept calling and asking for the pretty young actresses to wear tighter shirts and more make-up.
