PREP FOOTBALL WOODS COMES HOME Foot injury sends former Tiger from NFL back to CHS.

By JORDAN KROEGER [email protected]

Zedrick Woods isn’t upset. He’s at peace. After three years of fight- ing a nagging foot injury, Woods was forced to end his football career suddenly on July 22. He retired right before the Jacksonville Jaguars began training camp after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss. Now Woods has returned home to a new chapter at a familiar place — Columbia High School. Columbia coach Brian Allen has brought Woods aboard to help coach the linebackers this season and he was out on the practice field Monday as the Tigers opened training camp. Woods says he always want- ed to have a positive impact on kids one day and coach- ing now provides the per- fect outlet to do it. “One chapter closes to open up another one,” Woods said. “Football is something I love and just being out here and being able to impact them is something I’ve always want- ed to do. I’m in position to do it and I was always told if you do something you love to do you never work a day in your life.” Woods said he has a sep- arated sesamoid bone in his foot. He’s been told he was born with it, but he feels the injury occurred during his junior year at Ole Miss because his foot never hurt his entire life prior to that. But ever since then, Woods’ foot has been in pain. It’s constant, whether JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter Columbia assistant coach Zedrick Woods speaks with linebacker Marlon Pollock during Monday’s practice. Woods has joined Columbia’s WOODS continued on 10A coaching staff after retiring from the NFL on July 22 due to a foot injury. “One chapter closes to open up another one. Football is something I love and just being out here and being able to impact them is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m in position to do it and I was always told if you do something you love to do you never work a day in your life.” — Zedrick Woods on retiring from the NFL and returning to CHS

The decision to retire certainly Practice begins at CHS wasn’t an easy one, especially after running the fastest 40-yard dash time (4.29 seconds) at the NFL Combine in March. Woods was believed to have a great chance at making the Jaguars 53-man roster. “It was tough decision but it wasn’t a decision where after I made it I was depressed or any- thing,” Woods said. “It’s kind of a relief because I made the decision for myself. No one pushed me to make it. It’s tough hanging up the cleats because that’s something we all see ourselves doing for the rest of our lives, but I think I’ve dealt with it pretty good because even Coach Allen says football is just an experience. It’s not really a career for most people. I knew at some point it was coming. It came a little bit early but I’m not disap- pointed about it. I got a chance to do a lot of things and play in some cool games.” Woods participated in the Jaguars rookie minicamp in May but says the “throbbing” pain in his foot was just too much to bear. Allen always tells his play- ers they have a home back at their alma mater and Woods was welcomed back with open arms. His track record didn’t hurt either. Woods was a standout outside linebacker for Columbia during his career, making the Class 6A All-State second team during his junior and senior seasons before graduating in 2015. He went on to play in 49 games at Ole Miss — starting 37 — and ended his college career with 133 total tackles and six interceptions playing safety. Columbia receiver Jaden Williams looks in a pass. Columbia linebacker Le’vontae Camiel leads the pack during sprints. “I’m proud of everything he’s done,” Allen said. “So many kids get caught up in the identification of football. Football doesn’t define you. It’s what you do with your life beyond the sport and how you’re a service to others. He understands that. He’s a kid that has faith and a kid that’s been guided the correct way so I think whatever he does he’s going to be successful.” Woods, who turns 22 this Saturday, now gets to coach with his twin brother Zyric, who is the JV’s defensive coordinator, and his older brother Felix, who is 24 and the varsity’s defensive coor- dinator. Woods also isn’t the only for- mer player to join Allen’s staff this season. Deontae’ Crumitie, who graduated from Columbia with Woods, will help out the offensive line after playing at Troy from 2015-2018. “The kids have someone who’s be at the college level who can tell them things from a college perspective from the different coaching that they’ve had,” Allen said. “That’s always an asset.
