Story & Photo By Dan Davidson

Classical music with a hip- hop backbeat is not what you might usually associate with a sedate sounding string trio, but John Littlejohn (violin), Anthony Cheung (viola) and Alex Cheung (cello) manage to make it seem entirely natural. The only warning of the evening was given by Alex, who suggested that the beat-box noises they made to go with their playing might mean it would be best not to sit directly in front of them; there might be a bit of spray. The Vancouver based trio performs as Infinitus, pleasing their audience with a mixture of classical standards and original jazz/hip-hop arrangements and compositions, as well as accepting the challenge of taking audience requests during the second half of their show.

They are touring the Yukon in support of their first self- titled CD. They have been working since they formed n in 2008, and have had 700 Infinitus are John Littlejohn (violin) , and Anthony Cheung (cello) and Alex Cheung (viola). outreach performances in schools, nursing homes, juvenile detention centres, and hospitals. Story & Photo By Dan Davidson

The Yukon School of Visual Arts awarded its first two scholarships in a small ceremony in the school’s Confluence Gallery on September 19 at 10:30 a.m. YSOVA Program Director Dr. Curtis Collins explained that the college now offers two scholarships each year, one to a deserving applicant from the Yukon and a second to a deserving applicant from Canada or the United States. “It’s basically for us to encourage students to apply from within the Yukon and now we’re recruiting into the United States and the rest of Canada too,” he said. These awards acknowledge excellence in the area of visual arts and are intended to attract the most accomplished high school students from throughout the Yukon and across North America to SOVA’s foundation year program. Successful completion of the foundation year in Dawson guarantees students a seat for their second year at one of the following arts colleges: Emily Carr University, Vancouver, B.C.; Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary, Alberta; OCAD University, Toronto, Ontario; The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, N.S.; University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, B.C. Yukon College President, Dr. Karen Barnes was on hand to assist in the presentations to Haylie Griffis-King of Whitehorse and Isabel Bergwin from Etobicoke, Ontario. “I just want to say,” Barnes added, “that (Yukon College) matches this, so you get to double your money. This is really a thrill for me, because I was on the original governing council and I remember when we talked about these scholarships, so I’m really thrilled that I get to be here to give them to you.” Photo:The YSOVA portion of each scholarship is $1,000. * YSOVA Scholarship: Dr. Curtis Collins, Isabel Bergwin, Haylie Griffis-King, Dr. Karen Barnes THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, October 1, 2014 P21 Bookends: This fantasy is a cautionary tale

Charlie disappeared one day three years ago after spending a lot of time on his private quest to find a “door into the future,” which he believed would be a better place. Neil thinks the whole idea is nutty, until he wakes up in the middle of the night, finds his dog barking at what seems to be a flame lined hole in the air, stumbles through it, and finds himself somewhere and somewhen else.
