Though I’m based in KL, I go back to Kota Kinabalu at least once a year to visit relatives and stop by the Diethelm Travel Sabah office. Normally I make sure to stay at least a week (longer if possible) to continue working my way through a must-eat foodie list that just keeps getting longer. Don’t believe me? Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. Sabah has a diverse ethnic population of just over 3 million people with 32 recognised ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Malays (these include the many different cultural groups that originally existed in their own homeland within Sabah), Chinese and “non‐official immigrants” (mainly Filipino and Indonesian). In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

4th February 2012 For Immediate Release RE-LAUNCH OF THE NORTH BORNEO RAILWAY Sutera Harbour, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah – The North Borneo Railway is a joint venture project between Sutera Harbour and the Sabah State Railway Department (Jabatan Keretapi Negeri Sabah), signifying a historical collaboration through common initiatives between the private sector and the state government. The North Borneo Railway was temporarily closed in September 2005 due to the upgrading works of the railway track by the Ministry of Transportation. The North Borneo Railway continued its service on 4th July 2011 after the upgrading works was completed. The re-launch ceremony was officiated by YB. Datuk Masidi Manjun, the Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment Sabah at the Tanjung Aru Train Station in conjunction with the Kota Kinabalu City Day Celebration. Present at the ceremony were YB Datuk Japlin Hajim Akim, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure development Sabah, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Tan Sri Ahmad Kamil Jaffar, Chairman of Sutera Harbour Resort, Datuk Edward Ong, President of Sutra Harbour Resort and other distinguish guests. The primary goals of the project are to further enhance the existing infrastructure, to promote Sabah as a destination market for domestic and international tourism, and to provide another quality activity in Kota Kinabalu. The North Borneo Railway also aims to give the experience of the bygone era of British North Borneo creating a time capsule and transporting passengers along the life line of Sabah. It creates the nostalgic romance of people travelling by steam train in the past. The rail line runs from Tanjung Aru through the towns of Kinarut, Kawang and Papar.

Does the Possession of a Kadazandusun Traditional
Athens Journal of Social Sciences - Volume 6, Issue 3 – Pages 251-262 Does the Possession of a Kadazandusun Traditional Costume and the Capability to Play a Traditional Musical Instrument Differentiate an Individual’s Identity Orientation? By Getrude Cosmas, Agnis Sombuling†, Ben Anderson AK Melai‡ & Andrew Poninting The aim of this study was to examine the differences between Kadazandusun participants who possessed and who do not possess a traditional Kadazandusun costume in regard to the four types of identity orientation (i.e. personal, relational, social & collective). These differences were also assessed between participants who were and were not able to play a traditional musical instrument. A total of 242 Kadazandusun participants were enrolled, and the study used a survey questionnaire with two sections. Section A included questions about the demographic profile (age, gender, ethnicity, possession of a traditional costume, ability to play a traditional musical instrument, and education level), while Section B measured the four types of identity orientation (i.e. personal, relational, social & collective). We hypothesized that participants who possessed a Kadazandusun traditional costume and those who could play a traditional musical instrument had higher relational and collective identity orientation. The study revealed that those who possessed a Kadazandusun traditional costume had higher relational, social, and collective self- identity compared to those who did not own a costume. Further, those who could play a traditional musical instrument only showed higher on social identity orientation than those who could not play any traditional musical instrument. These findings showed that people’s identity orientation may differ based such cultural elements (e.g., possession of a Kadazandusun traditional costume and ability to play a traditional musical instrument).

This study is guided by three research questions: (1) to explore the level of understanding of local and international tourists on green marketing; (2) to gather tourists’ points of view if marketers have failed or they have never really tried to adopt the concept; and (3) to examine the level of awareness of tourists relating to green practices embraced by hotels. Purposive sampling using the Maximum Variation Sampling (MVS) technique is used to capture a wide range of perspectives in selecting the respondents. The discussion reveals that the concept has evolved hastily in developed countries while it is an emerging trend in developing countries like Malaysia. While some hotels have already begun to respond to environmental concerns in the country, the lack of promotions and advertisements have become part of the causes of knowledge non-appearance.

The combination of immense forests replete with a fabulous array of towering trees, plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates serviced by some of the most comfortable and attractive accommodations to be enjoyed anywhere in the tropics together with some truly sumptuous meals guarantees an unforgettable experience. Whitehead’s Broadbill K. David Bishop Borneo is indisputably an extraordinary place and this continues to be underscored by new discoveries. Recent genetic studies have now shown that the Bornean Pygmy Elephant is indeed a very distinct taxon; the Borneo population of Orang Utan should be treated as a separate species and most recently studies of the Bornean Clouded Leopard show that it too is a completely separate species from all other populations. Jumlah penduduk yang meningkat secara berterusan, penerokaan daerah untuk kilang-kilang dan pembangunan infrastruktur lainnya telah memberi tekanan kepada alam sekitar. Perubahan yang begitu cepat terhadap pembangunan di bandaraya Kota Kinabalu juga telah memberikan kesan dan tekanan kepada lembangan di sungai Inanam dan Likas. Kualiti air di kedua-dua sungai ini sebanyak sedikit mengalami penurunan dan pencemaran. Demikian juga dengan luas tanah atau wilayah untuk pertanian sawah padi mengalami pengurangan. Lantaran itu diperlukan sesebuah kaedah dan teknik penderiaan yang jitu mengikut perspektif disiplin Geografi bagi mengenal pasti wilayah dan persekitaran yang berubah tersebut. Dalam kajian ini, Remote Sensing dan Sistem Maklumat Geografi telah digunakan untuk mengenalpasti jenis guna tanah dan kaitannya dengan kualiti air di kawasan tersebut. Kaedah konvensional untuk pengurusan lembangan, sama ada in-situ mahupun makmal, sangat mahal dari segi kos dan masa berbanding dengan penggunaan data Remote Sensing dan Sistem Maklumat Geografi. Satelit Remote Sensing mempunyai keupayaan dan kelebihan tersendiri, kerana ia boleh menyediakan data yang berulangan dari segi masa, murah dan liputan yang sangat luas. Dengan membangunkan data Remote Sensing sebagai sumber kajian, ianya juga mempunyai potensi yang cukup besar untuk memperolehi beberapa parameter air. Akhir sekali, ia dapat mengeluarkan hasil data baru melalui teknik Klasifikasi Tidak Terselia dan Klasifikasi Terselia untuk melihat dan menghasilkan peta guna tanah dan sumber-sumber pencemaran air di sungai Inanam dan Likas.
