But in the late 1950s administrators believed it was best for the club’s long-term future to be accommodated closer to its player development base on the other side of the Swan River. Over the following 20 years at Lathlain Park Perth won five premierships and missed a sixth by two points. There was a brief return to the WACA for matches in the 1990s but the now Mineral Resources Park remained home. The facility has undergone a significant renovation with the arrival of West Coast’s training base. One of the changes has been the establishment of high-grade lighting, which will be in operation for the battle with the Royals. “Most clubs can only hit about 200 lux maximum in lighting but there are no disappointing corners with our new set- up that can hit 800 lux,” said Perth chief executive Marty Atkins. \\ Michael Sinclair in action. 15 July 2019 MEDIA STATEMENT: Christ Church Grammar School Indigenous program inspires excellence Year 12 student Liam Henry has recently been selected in the NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian team. His selection follows a great performance at this year’s NAB AFL Under-18 Championships where he kicked three goals for Western Australia. Liam is a boarding student from Tammin, 184km east of Perth, enjoys playing for the School’s Firsts Football team and is shaping up to be a promising prospect in this year’s AFL draft. Christ Church Principal Alan Jones commented, “Our Indigenous Student Program provides amazing opportunities for boarders from across the State.” “The boys are immersed in the school community, participate in an excellent educational journey and inspire and educate their fellow students with stories from their rich culture, ceremonies and connection to the land.” “We are extremely proud of Liam’s achievements, especially in the sporting arena.” “A key highlight for our Indigenous students is our annual NAIDOC Week celebrations with activities led by the boys, including an impressive art exhibition and cultural performances during assembly.” “Through our Indigenous Student Program, we learn as much from the boys as they do from the School. They are wonderful contributors to the rich diversity of Christ Church.” Liam is one of six players selected to the NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian team and is joined by WA ruckman Luke Jackson, midfielders Deven Robertson, Jeremy Sharp and Trent Rivers, and forward Elijah Taylor. Full Name of Degree: Bachelor of Arts in History with Honours Thesis Title: Cracking the Code: Why Western Australian abandoned rugby for Australian rules football in 1885 Author: Sean Douglas Cowan Year: 2015 iii ABSTRACT This study of the early years of football in Western Australia investigates the reasons for the abandonment of the Rugby Union rules and the adoption of the new Victorian rules in 1885. Through an examination of the newspapers of the day – which are the only known primary material concerning those events – it will be established that the people of Western Australia were not wedded to a particular code before the 1880s. This changed in 1882 when the first clubs were formed and the Rugby Union rules were adopted.
