London’s Infrastructure: Investing For Growth London’s Infrastructure: Investing for Growth Foreword London is a leading world city – and to my mind, the best city in the world in which to do business. The projected growth in population from 8.6 million today to 10 million people in the mid-2030s suggests I’m not alone in thinking that. But in the debate about London’s future there is sometimes a tendency to see this projected growth as a problem or a challenge – when we should be seeing it for the fantastic opportunity it is. In the period following the Second World War, we made a conscious choice not to grow London and instead planned for its decline; an approach that was to the detriment of the UK as a whole. We need to embrace London’s future growth, not shy away from it. In particular we need to invest in the transport, housing and wider infrastructure critical to making the capital a great place to live, work and visit. This requires London government to develop an effective and well- governed infrastructure programme for the capital; one that is unashamedly focused on those projects that will drive enhanced productivity, competitiveness and economic growth. The programme needs to have a long-term horizon, but also to be responsive to the changing circumstances and needs of London’s economy. And it needs to be funded. This report argues that investment in London will pay for itself. So as we approach a general election – and in London next year a Mayoral election – we need our political leaders to act on the conclusions set out in this report from London business, and to go for growth.

  • Visioning Vauxhall May 2016 LBL0.Pdf
VISIONING VAUXHALL MAY 2016 Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners 2 FOREWORD Vauxhall is changing. You can see that from the cranes and construction work going on. But, I know many people wonder what it will feel like in a few years, when the cranes have gone and there are thousands of new homes, new places to work, shop and eat, as well as places to visit such as new art galleries and a cinema. The council wants to make sure that local people really feel the benefit of the investment that’s bringing homes, jobs and business opportunities, an extension to Wyvil Primary School, and improvements to our local parks and open spaces. It’s important we recognise and cherish our borough’s history and culture and use this opportunity to shape the places we live, work and play in. Since last summer we’ve been asking people who live, work and travel through Vauxhall what they think about the changes, what they value about the area now and how its open spaces, shops and transport could be improved. We’ve used that public feedback in our discussions with Transport for London (TfL) who, in March, published the results of their consultation on plans to remove the one-way traffic system and replace it with two way streets. Two thirds of people who responded were positive about the proposals and you can read the results in more detail here https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/vauxhall-cross. Lambeth Council has always been clear that it supports improving this busy transport interchange to make it safer and more welcoming for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • First Passenger Trains Complete Journeys on New Northern Line Extension Over Christmas
First passenger trains complete journeys on new Northern Line Extension over Christmas January 4, 2021 The Northern Line Extension passed a major milestone at Christmas after test passenger trains successfully completed the journey through the new tunnels from Kennington to Battersea Power Station. The Northern line passenger trains entered the new 3.2km tunnels at Kennington, travelling through the newly constructed step-plate junction that connects the existing Northern line tunnels to the extension. The trains then continued to Nine Elms Tube station before arriving at the extension’s second new station at Battersea Power Station. They then turned around using the new crossover junction to complete the journey back to Kennington. These first test journeys mark the completion of a number of complex milestones in 2020 which include: Switching on a permanent electricity supply to the new Tube stations at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms Energising the traction power supply to the rails, enabling passenger trains to run along the new tracks Successfully commissioning the latest edition of signalling software that connects the extension to the existing Northern line at Kennington Work to finish the extension, which remains scheduled for completion in autumn this year, is now focused on completing necessary signalling software upgrades and the fit-out of the two new stations which will be the first to be added to the Northern line since the extension to Morden in 1926. Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “I’m delighted that the Northern Line Extension has reached this major milestone, with the project on track to welcome its first passengers in the autumn.
