I read several Lunar Park of this book before reading, most of which denounced Lunar Park as being awful and I have to say, I'm surprised. I tore through it in 3 days. All that and horror, too! I read somewhere that he was influenced by Steven King, in Lunar Park this one. I have to say, I like the Ellis version of King even I read several reviews of this book before reading, most of which denounced it as being awful and I have to say, Lunar Park surprised. I have to say, I like the Lunar Park version of King even better. I don't necessarily agree with those that say Ellis clearly hates himself. He might. Yes, I'm a little confused and unsure of some parts - I've come to expect that from Ellis. Lunar Park I like a book or movie that has me researching and discussing with other readers, trying to figure it all out. To me, the books that deserve bad reviews are those that I've forgotten the moment I close Lunar Park cover and put it down. I can see how this is definitely not a book for everyone. For me, there were many of my favorite elements. There were several passages that had me thinking, "I really wish they'd make a movie out of this," just for the visuals. I'm a big fan of psychological horror with lots of blood and gore. Dare I say this almost falls in line with the J-Horror genre? View all 3 comments. Lunar Park Park is a bit different, because while I felt the expected pity and disgust toward the main character in the beginning of the novel, toward the end he made a turn for the better and I found myself somewhat invested in him. The satire and social commentary BEE is known for is definitely not missing from the book. Whereas his past books commented on the casual drug abuse in the 80s and 90s by social upscale Lunar Park, I found it interesting Lunar Park the most shocking form of drug use abuse? I saw a guy on the tube in London reading this and noticed he was near the end. I wanted to stand up and say, "Hey, it's creeping you out, isn't it. Isn't it?! It's inappropriate. Bret Easton Ellis, on the other hand, can do whatever the hell he wants. And he does. Putting yourself in a novel is either the ballsiest thing you can do, or the assy-est. In this case, both. It's also a damn disturbing ride, and the fact that he had the nerve to treat himself the way he treats all his other characters, facing off Lunar Park self-disemboweling dogs and "the world is more horrible than we pretend" madness, is just cold, man. Landmarks Preservation Commission July 12, 1988; Designation List 206 LP-1636 THE CYCLONE, 834 Surf Avenue at West 10th Street, Brooklyn. Built 1927. Inventor Harry c. Baker. Engineer Vernon Keenan. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 8697, Lot 4 in part consisting of the land on which the described improvement is situated. On September 15, 1987, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the cyclone and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 12). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Six witnesses spoke in favor of designation, including the ride's owner, whose support was given dependant upon his ability to perform routine repair and maintenance. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The Commission has received many letters in favor of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary Descended from the ice slides enjoyed in eighteenth-century Russia, through the many changes incorporated by French and American inventors, the Cyclone has been one of our country's premier roller coasters since its construction in 1927. Designed by engineer Vernon Keenan and built by noted amusement ride inventor Harry C. Baker for Jack and Irving Rosenthal, the Cyclone belongs to an increasingly rare group of wood-track coasters; modern building codes make it irreplaceable. The design of its twister-type circuit and the enormous weight of the cars allow the trains to travel on their own momentum after being carried up to the first plunge by mechanical means. Now part of Astroland amusement park, the Cyclone is not only a well recognized feature of Coney Island, where the first "modern" coaster was built in 1884, but, sadly, is the only roller coaster still operating there.

MODERN HERITAGE IN DANGER São Paulo, Brazil OPEN LETTER on the Ibirapuera Gymnasium and the Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sports Complex As faculty professors and researchers of the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo, we wish to express our deepest concern over the future of Ibirapuera Gymnasium and the Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sports Complex in light of the State Government’s plan to turn over the area to private developers. As proposed, the project poses a serious threat to the physical integrity and operation of a sports facility that, in addition to being widely used for the development of athletes in Brazil, is an integral part of the history of the City of São Paulo and a fundamental achievement in the history of Brazilian architecture. It also has significant use and affective value for the sports community, which has used it extensively since the 1950s. There are many reasons to preserve the Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sports Complex, where the Ibirapuera Gymnasium is located. The latter should be protected for its stylistic and constructive features, but also for its importance in modern Brazilian architecture and in the modernization of sports and culture in the City of São Paulo in the mid-1900s. That means that the Gymnasium is key to understanding leisure and recreational architecture in Brazil, as well as to understanding the transformations of spectacle and sports activity in this ever-expanding metropolis. In fact, the Gymnasium represents the government’s efforts to create high-quality public spaces

  • HISTORIC PLEASURE PIERS, a CENTURYOLD CATALYST for AMERICAN TOURISM Galveston Pier to Reclaim Stature As a Premier Pleasure Pier
MEDIA Ashley Pearce, [email protected] CONTACTS: Hailey Polzin, [email protected] Dancie Perugini Ware Public Relations 713.224.9115 HISTORIC PLEASURE PIERS, A CENTURYOLD CATALYST FOR AMERICAN TOURISM Galveston Pier to reclaim stature as a premier Pleasure Pier HOUSTON, TX (January 30, 2012) – Throughout the 20th century, historic Pleasure Piers became America’s centerpiece for preeminent entertainment and family amusement. Chicago’s Navy Pier, Santa Monica Pier, Coney Island’s Luna Park, and Galveston’s Pleasure Pier routinely drew record crowds and headliner entertainers. Originally, municipalities built most of these iconic piers for utility functions; the original Santa Monica Pier opened in 1909 to carry sewer pipes beyond the ocean’s breakers. But entrepreneurs with vision transformed these massive steel and concrete over‐water platforms into Pleasure Piers, and tourism soared to new highs as a result. Historic Pleasure Piers have origins set in the cultural American Renaissance, circa 1876‐ 1917, and specifically the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, known as The World’s Columbian Exposition. Here, crowds totaling nearly half the American population experienced the first large‐scale elaboration of a cultural style gaining momentum known as the City Beautiful Movement. The City Beautiful Movement flourished through the turn of the century, setting a reform in North American architecture and urban planning that used beautification and monumental grandeur in cities to boost morale and civic virtue for the good of all. Indeed, Chicago’s World’s Fair was a defining event in American culture, profoundly influencing architecture and the arts, while bolstering Chicago’s self image and American industrial optimism.

Name Period A Date Exercise 29 Coney Island Steeplechase Park Opens The first of the great Coney Island parks, Steeplechase Park, was the work of George C. Tilyou, and it grew from the sprig of envy. A local since childhood and proprietor of the Surf Theater at Coney Island, Tilyou visited the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago on his honeymoon and was awestruck by the Ferris Wheel, which debuted there. Unable to procure the wheel for himself1, as it had already been sold, he contracted the Pennsylvania Steel Company to build another one expressly for him. Tilyou's Ferris Wheel rose from a plot of land on the Bowery and West Eighth Street, near Culver's Iron Tower. After covering it with incandescent lights and billing it as the largest in the world (though this claim was plainly untrue), he had his sister Kathryn sit behind the cash register wearing their mother's diamond necklace. For maximum effect, two strong men stood beside Figure 1: The "Funny Face" entrance to Steeplechase. her, as if to protect the jewels from thieves. The Ferris Wheel opened for business in the spring of 1894 and paid for itself within a few weeks. Although Tilyou owned a number of other rides, they were scattered around Coney Island until 1895, when Captain Paul Boyton inaugurated his enclosed Sea-Lion Park. Taking that as his cue, Tilyou opened Steeplechase Park, with its leering "funny face" logo, on a 15-acre plot of oceanfront land and began looking for attractions to fill it. Since horse racing was easily the most popular diversion at Coney Island, Tilyou procured a mechanical race course, devised by the British inventor J.W.
