N’Gu´er´ekata on the occasion of his 60th birthday We are happy and honored to be Guest Editors of this Issue of the “Cubo A Mathematical Journal” dedicated to our friend and colleague Gaston M. N’Gu´er´ekata, professor of mathematics at Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD, USA, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Professor N’Gu´er´ekata earned a Ph.D. degree in mathematics at the University of Montreal, Montreal, Qu´ebec, Canada, under Professor Samuel Zaidman’s supervision and attended the Uni- versity of California at Berkeley on a postdoctorate program. He is twice tenured as a Full Professor at the University of Bangui in the Central African Republic and Morgan State University in Bal- timore, MD, USA (since 2003). He is a Fulbrighter, African Academic of Sciences Fellow, and a Member of the Council for African American Researchers in the Mathematical Sciences. In ad- dition, he received numerous honors, including the “Dr. Santye Jean McIntire, II, International Award”, “the NAFEO Noble Award”, from France, USA, and the Central African Republic for his contributions to research and higher education. He was also the Claytor-Wooddard Invited Lecturer at the Mathematics Joint Meetings in San Antonio, TX, USA, in January 2006. The research career of Professor N’Gu´er´ekata is inspiring and unique in mathematical world. He obtained his Ph.D in 1980, then went to Africa with almost no research opportunities. He held several very high positions in the government of the Central African Republic, then 15 years later he came back to the Unite States and resumed successfully with research. To our best knowledge, no other mathematician has ever done this. Professor N’Gu´er´ekata has made important contributions in the field of evolution equations in abstract spaces. Especially, by writing his 2001 book on almost automorphic functions with values in Banach and locally convex linear spaces, and its application to differential equations in Banach and Hilbert spaces, he made a resurgence of a theory abandoned for many years since S. Bochner and W. A. Veech, and did influence on the rebirth of applications of almost automorphic functions to 1 evolution equations. He authored over 160 research publications, including 5 research monographs in the areas of evolution equations, harmonic analysis, and the theory of almost periodic and almost automorphic functions. He is the Chief Editor and Founder of the International Journal of Evolution Equations and the Journal of Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Applications, Associate Editor

    ON CALABI’S EXTREMAL METRICS AND PROPERNESS WEIYONG HE Abstract. In this paper we extend recent breakthrough of Chen-Cheng [11, 12, 13] on ex- istence of constant scalar K¨ahler metric on a compact K¨ahler manifold to Calabi’s extremal metric. Our argument follows [13] and there are no new a prior estimates needed, but rather there are necessary modifications adapted to the extremal case. We prove that there exists an extremal metric with extremal vector V if and only if the modified Mabuchi energy is proper, modulo the action the subgroup in the identity component of automorphism group which commutes with the flow of V . We introduce two essentially equivalent notions, called reductive properness and reduced properness. We observe that one can test reductive proper- ness/reduced properness only for invariant metrics. We prove that existence of an extremal metric is equivalent to reductive properness/reduced properness of the modified Mabuchi en- ergy. 1. Introduction Recently Chen and Cheng [11, 12, 13] have made surprising breakthrough in the study of constant scalar curvature (csck) on a compact K¨ahler manifold (M, [ω], J), with a fixed K¨ahler class [ω]. A K¨ahler metric with constant scalar curvature are special cases of Calabi’s extremal metric [6, 7], which was introduced by E. Calabi in 1980s to find a canonical representative within the K¨ahler class [ω]. In [21], S. K. Donaldson proposed a beautiful program in K¨ahler geometry to attack Calabi’s renowned problem of existence of csck metrics in terms of the geometry of space of K¨ahler potentials with the Mabuchi metric [39], H := φ C∞(M) : ωφ = ω + √ 1∂∂φ¯ > 0 .

    HEAT KERNEL AND CURVATURE BOUNDS IN RICCI FLOWS WITH BOUNDED SCALAR CURVATURE RICHARD H. BAMLER AND QI S. ZHANG Abstract. In this paper we analyze Ricci flows on which the scalar curvature is globally or locally bounded from above by a uniform or time-dependent constant. On such Ricci flows we establish a new time-derivative bound for solutions to the heat equation. Based on this bound, we solve several open problems: 1. distance distortion estimates, 2. the existence of a cutoff function, 3. Gaussian bounds for heat kernels, and, 4. a backward pseudolocality theorem, which states that a curvature bound at a later time implies a curvature bound at a slightly earlier time. Using the backward pseudolocality theorem, we next establish a uniform L2 curvature bound in dimension 4 and we show that the flow in dimension 4 converges to an orbifold at a singularity. We also obtain a stronger ε-regularity theorem for Ricci flows. I Introduction Yang-Mills theory is growing at the interface between high energy physics and mathemat- ics It is well known that Yang-Mills theory and Gauge theory in general had a profound impact on the development of modern differential and algebraic geometry. One could quote Donaldson invariants in four dimensional differential topology, Hitchin Kobayashi conjecture relating the existence of Hermitian-Einstein metric on holomorphic bundles over K¨ahlermanifolds and Mumford stability in complex geometry or also Gromov Witten invariants in symplectic geometry...etc. While the influence of Gauge theory in geometry is quite notorious, one tends sometimes to forget that Yang-Mills theory has been also at the heart of fundamental progresses in the non-linear analysis of Partial Differential Equations in the last decades. The purpose of this survey is to present the variations of this important lagrangian. We shall raise analysis question such as existence and regu- larity of Yang-Mills minimizers or such as the compactification of the \moduli space" of critical points to Yang-Mills lagrangian in general. II The Plateau Problem. Before to move to the Yang-Mills minimization problem we will first recall some funda- mental facts regarding the minimization of the area in the parametric approach and some elements of the resolution of the so called Plateau problem.
