At USC, you can also measure experience in miles, medals and time zones. This 2009 season, the USC women’s team returns two All-Americans with 95 goals and 321 saves between them – a not-so- subtle hint at the balance stabilizing the Trojan waters this year – as well as a slew of talent from last year’s NCAA finalist squad. Jordan SAnae and All-American Michelle Stein are USC’s two seniors, bringing leadership and three trips to the NCAA Tournament to the pool for their final year at Troy. Several more returning Women of Troy bring in summer experience state-side, as Stein and sophomore Kristen Dronberger were members of the U.S. National B Team and Tumua Anae earned honors as the Top 40 Festival Most Valuable Goalie. Meanwhile, junior Forel Davies has been deepening her defensive skills and all-around game with the U.S. Junior National Team. Davies, Alexandra Kiss and Kally Lucas are all back in the waters of Troy as juniors with a wealth of offensive firepower. In whole, USC returns seven of its top-10 scorers from last year. Counting up years of experience on the roster this season is only part of the story, however. For 2009, USC head coach Jovan Vavic has added four players boasting significant mileage from overseas. While the current Women of Troy have been taking yearly trips to the NCAA Tournament, that fearsome foursome was racking up frequent flier miles – and hardware – in international waters. Back in the waters of Troy after a year off spent training and traveling the world with Team USA is now-junior Kami Craig. The tremendous talent at two-meters flexed her muscles in Beijing during the summer and came home with a silver medal from the 2008 . Her experience abroad is edged only by three other international imports. Ilse van der Meijden hails from the Netherlands and was the goalie for the Dutch squad in Beijing, anchoring a gold-medal finish for the Netherlands to give the Trojans two Olympic medalists in the water this season. And even more travel time has been clocked by USC newcomers Joelle Bekhazi and Rosanna Tomiuk – two Canadian national teamers. Truth is, the Trojan roster is dripping with experience in every shape and form. All-American junior goalie Tumua Anae and Olympic gold-medalist van der Meijden provide an unheard-of tagteam of talent in the cage, forming a powerful backbone for the defense that Vavic has now established as a trademark of his Trojan teams. “I think this is going to be one of our toughest and best defensive teams,” Vavic said. “We are athletic, quick and tough. We can easily start six girls without worry of a mismatch at set. We have every position covered with two or three players and we are really great in goal.” While All-American senior Michelle Stein comes back as USC’s top scorer from 2008, Olympian Craig settles into set with plenty of power sprinkled around the perimeter with Stein. Bekhazi and Tomiuk both can put the ball away – something that senior Jordan Anae and juniors Forel Davies, Alexandra Kiss, Kally Lucas have been doing as sneaky and swift scorers for several seasons 2009 Quick Facts already at Troy. 2009 USC Women's Water Polo Media Guide • 1 • USCwomen’s water2009 polo Head Coach head coach Jovan Vavic15th season 7-time MPSF Coach of the Year • 4-time National Coach of the Year • 6 National Titles Head coach Jovan Vavic, one of the top water polo coaches in the country, serves a dual role as the head coach of both the USC men’s and women’s teams. He has been with the USC women’s program since its inception in 1995, and has led his men’s and women’s teams to national championships twice in the same school year (the men in 1998 and 2003 and the women in 1999 and 2004). In his 14th season at the helm of the men’s program, Vavic led the Trojans to an undefeated season topped off with the 2008 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. Vavic brings a 321-112 (.741) all-time record on the women’s side into the 2009 season — his 15th as the women’s head coach. Since 1999 when the program was fully funded, Vavic’s record is 250-45 (.847) with an even more impressive 202-34 (.856) record in his last eight seasons. In 2008, Vavic led the Women of Troy to a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. For the second time in three years, USC reached the title match, falling to UCLA to finish the season at 21-8 after also taking second to the Bruins at the VAVIC AT USC MPSF Tournament. In 2007, USC had finished third at both the MPSF and NCAA 1996 MPSF Men’s Co-Coach of the Year tournaments, going 22-6 overall. His 2006 Women of Troy raced undefeated through the regular season and finished second in the NCAA Tournament, falling in the last 1998 National Men’s Co-Coach of the Year second to UCLA in a 9-8 decision that left the Trojans with a 27-3 overall record. For 1999 MPSF Women’s Coach of the Year the first time in school history, Vavic saw two of his players earn collegiate water polo’s 1999 National Women’s Coach of the Year highest honor, as Juraj Zatovic and made it a Trojan sweep of the 2003 MPSF Men’s Coach of the Year Peter J. Cutino Award for the 2005 men’s and 2006 women’s seasons. Vavic pulled a coaching double sweep when he was named 2003 National Coach 2003 National Men’s Coach of the Year of the Year and MPSF Coach of the Year for the men and 2004 National Coach of the 2004 MPSF Women’s Coach of the Year Year and MPSF Coach of the Year for the women, and he was named 2005 MPSF 2004 National Women’s Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year once again on the men’s side following the Trojans’ 2005 MPSF Men’s Coach of the Year most recent NCAA title. His 2004 women’s team won the national championship and became the first team in NCAA Championship history to go undefeated (29-0).Vavic 2005 National Men’s Coach of the Year earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors. 2006 MPSF Men’s Coach of the Year Vavic oversaw the team’s move from Division II in 1995 to Division I in 1996. He 2008 MPSF Men’s Coach of the Year guided USC to its first-ever Division I National Collegiate Championships appearance in 1997 and a seventh-place national finish while the 1998 team took fifth nationally. Men’s career coaching record: 313-57 (.846) • 14 seasons The 2000 squad added another strong showing, finishing second nationally. Women’s career coaching record: 321-112 (.741) • 14 seasons In 1999, Vavic was named the National Coach of the Year and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year. Williams as Troy’s co-head coach in 1995 and took over the men’s program in 1999 Vavic came to USC in 1992 as an assistant men’s water polo coach, joined John after Williams retired. He and Williams were named National Coaches of the Year in 1998 after leading USC to its first-ever national championship. They were also named MPSF Co-Coaches of the Year in 1996 after leading USC to the conference title. In fact, in the 1998-99 season, Vavic did something no other coach has accomplished as his teams won three national championships: besides capturing the 1998 men’s and 1999 women’s titles, his 1999 men’s club team won the Men’s Senior National Club Championship. In his 12 seasons with the men’s program, Vavic has improved his career coaching record on the men’s side to 265-54 (.831). In his tenure as men’s head coach, Vavic boasts a winning record against all opponents on the men’s side of the game, recording only two losses in 12 seasons against teams outside the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. He is 192-52 against MPSF men’s teams since 1995. Vavic brought home the school’s second men’s national championship in the 2003 season as the Trojans went 24-3 and defeated host Stanford, 9-7, in overtime in the title match. He also earned National Coach of the Year and MPSF Coach of the Year honors. In January of 2005, Vavic was named Men's Elite Zone Coach of the Year by U.S. Water Polo for the coastal California region. The 46-year-old Vavic, a native of Yugoslavia, spent the 1991 season as an assistant men’s coach at UCLA. Previously, he coached three seasons (1987-1990) at Palos Verdes (Calif.) High, where he led Palos Verdes to two undefeated league seasons (1988-89). In the summer of 1995, Vavic served as an assistant water polo coach at the World University Games. Last summer, Vavic was the head coach for the U.S. team that finished eighth at the WUG and narrowly missed a chance to play in the Jovan Vavic celebrates after the 2004 USC women (left) defeated Loyola Marymount medal round after losing to Serbia Montenegro 12-10 in a shootout. 10-8 to win the NCAA championship and complete the sweep after the men’s team (right) Vavic graduated from UCLA in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
