At USC, you can also measure experience in miles, medals and time zones. This 2009 season, the USC women’s water polo team returns two All-Americans with 95 goals and 321 saves between them – a not-so- subtle hint at the balance stabilizing the Trojan waters this year – as well as a slew of talent from last year’s NCAA finalist squad. Jordan SAnae and All-American Michelle Stein are USC’s two seniors, bringing leadership and three trips to the NCAA Tournament to the pool for their final year at Troy. Several more returning Women of Troy bring in summer experience state-side, as Stein and sophomore Kristen Dronberger were members of the U.S. National B Team and Tumua Anae earned honors as the Top 40 Festival Most Valuable Goalie. Meanwhile, junior Forel Davies has been deepening her defensive skills and all-around game with the U.S. Junior National Team. Davies, Alexandra Kiss and Kally Lucas are all back in the waters of Troy as juniors with a wealth of offensive firepower. In whole, USC returns seven of its top-10 scorers from last year. Counting up years of experience on the roster this season is only part of the story, however. For 2009, USC head coach Jovan Vavic has added four players boasting significant mileage from overseas. While the current Women of Troy have been taking yearly trips to the NCAA Tournament, that fearsome foursome was racking up frequent flier miles – and hardware – in international waters. Back in the waters of Troy after a year off spent training and traveling the world with Team USA is now-junior Kami Craig. The tremendous talent at two-meters flexed her muscles in Beijing during the summer and came home with a silver medal from the 2008 Olympic Games. Her experience abroad is edged only by three other international imports. Ilse van der Meijden hails from the Netherlands and was the goalie for the Dutch squad in Beijing, anchoring a gold-medal finish for the Netherlands to give the Trojans two Olympic medalists in the water this season. And even more travel time has been clocked by USC newcomers Joelle Bekhazi and Rosanna Tomiuk – two Canadian national teamers. Truth is, the Trojan roster is dripping with experience in every shape and form. All-American junior goalie Tumua Anae and Olympic gold-medalist van der Meijden provide an unheard-of tagteam of talent in the cage, forming a powerful backbone for the defense that Vavic has now established as a trademark of his Trojan teams. “I think this is going to be one of our toughest and best defensive teams,” Vavic said. “We are athletic, quick and tough. We can easily start six girls without worry of a mismatch at set. We have every position covered with two or three players and we are really great in goal.” While All-American senior Michelle Stein comes back as USC’s top scorer from 2008, Olympian Craig settles into set with plenty of power sprinkled around the perimeter with Stein. Bekhazi and Tomiuk both can put the ball away – something that senior Jordan Anae and juniors Forel Davies, Alexandra Kiss, Kally Lucas have been doing as sneaky and swift scorers for several seasons 2009 Quick Facts already at Troy. Water Polo NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S Highlights Southern California Takes Championship Over Stanford, 10-9: Southern California coach Jovan Vavic was still soggy from the celebratory dip in the pool after his team’s 10-9 NCAA women’s water polo championship-clinching defeat of Stanford May 16. He was also all smiles with Women of Troy seniors Tumua Anae and Kally Lucas on either side of him. “When you’re a coach for so many years, you think it’s going to get old,” he said. “But I’m as excited about this finish, this championship as [2004]. It doesn’t get old. In fact, in some ways I was more excited for this one because we waited so long.” Past frustrations were exorcised at the San Diego State University Aztec Aquaplex in a defeat of top-seeded Stanford that came down literally to the final play. Despite lead- ing through three periods, Southern California had to hold off a Stanford rally that nearly bridged a four-goal gap. Annika Dries’ goal with 45 seconds remaining brought Stanford within one for the first time since early in the third period, and capped a torrid, 1-minute, 40-second sprint. With momentum decidedly on Stanford’s side and less than a minute separating Southern California from the championship it had been denied in the previous two title games, the Women of Troy regrouped. “With 45 seconds left, we were all in the center of the pool saying, `This is the best defense of our lives,’” said Lucas. “And we got our stop.

UCLA Women’s Water Polo – 2007 NCAA Champions The 2007 UCLA women’s water polo team enjoyed tremendous success, winning both the MPSF Tournament title and the NCAA Championship, the Bruins’ third-consecutive NCAA title. Senior attacker Kelly Rulon broke the school’s all-time scoring record, registering 70 goals for the third consecutive season to finish with 237 career goals. UCLA’s NCAA Championship marked the final collegiate game for five Bruins - Molly Cahill, Emily Feher, Kacy Kunkel, Jenna Murphy and Kelly Rulon. All five players contributed to each of UCLA’s NCAA championship seasons in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Rulon, who redshirted the 2004 season while training for the summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, helped lead the program to the 2003 NCAA title as a true freshman. The 2007 Bruins raced to a 10-0 record by late February, registering wins against California, Hawaii, Indiana, USC, Pacific, Santa Clara and UC Irvine. In the team’s final contest at the UC Irvine Invitational, UCLA dropped its first match of the season to Stanford, 8-4. In early April, the Bruins faced both USC and Stanford on consecutive weekends in MPSF play. UCLA registered a crucial 8-7 victory against USC on April 7, before dropping a 7- 6 decision to Stanford in overtime the following Saturday. With a mark of 20-2 after that loss, the Bruins never looked back. In the MPSF Tournament, UCLA cruised past Long Beach State, 17-5, on day one. In their semifinal match against USC, the Bruins won by a 10-9 margin.
