It was July of 2000, and I was 11 years old. I remember anxiously awaiting my first game that whole week and was telling my friends at junior lifeguards and club swimming all about it. The day of the game was a long one, as it included work with junior guards and swim practice, but the excitement and adrenaline I had built up over the week carried me through the game. I played for Coach Ted at CDM Junior Polo. Since I had no previous experience (i.e., I had no idea what I was doing!), he coached me through the game. No warm-up necessary—I just jumped right in and the clock started. I swam up and down the pool as hard as I could and tried my best to get to the ball. I had no clue about balance or helping on defense or even how to shoot the ball, but I was one of the fastest kids out there. I scored one counterattack goal, and that was by far the highlight of my first game. Who knew I would become a goalie? I continued to play throughout the summer and looked forward to my Thursday-night games all week! My first game was the just first step in a long process of learning and practice, but it was enough fun to keep me coming back...and I’m still enjoying the game 12 years later!. 4 Quick Shots from USA Water Polo 5 METERS What’s on my iPod?
