The two-time first-team All-MPSF honoree leads the MPSF in scoring average (2.84 GPG) and was named to the conference all- tournament team following her nine-goal weekend, which included a hat trick in each of the three games en route to a championship. Vavic owns 110 career goals in less than two years, already 18th all-time at USC. She received MPSF Player of the Week honors on Feb. 11 and 18, the only player to go back-to-back this year. This is the ninth MPSF Player of the Year award for USC (’13-Vavic,’10-Tumua Anae, ’09-Kami Craig, ’04-Moriah Van Norman,’02 & ’01-Sofia Konouhk, ’00-Aniko Pelle, ’99 & ‘97-Bernice Orwig). 222000111333 MMMPPPSSSFFF NNNeeewwwcccooommmeeerrr ooofff ttthhheee YYYeeeaaarrr RACHEL FATTAL • #4 • FRESHMAN • ATTACKER • UCLA UCLA freshman Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/Los Alamitos HS) becomes the first Bruin water polo player, from either gender, to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year. Her 62 goals through the MPSF Tournament is the most amongst all freshmen, and ranks sixth for all players. Fattal is also ninth in MPSF scoring average with 1.94 goals per game. Her most clutch outing was undoubtedly in the conference quarterfinals in Berkeley, April 26, against the host Cal Bears. With the Bruins down 3-0 and their NCAA Tournament chances winding down, Fattal proceeded to score once in the second quarter and twice in the fourth to get the team into the semifinals. She went on to score twice in the third-place win over No. 3 seed Arizona State, perhaps the NCAA at-large deciding game. Fattal was the April 15 MPSF Newcomer of the Week, scoring on 13 of 16 shots in three games. 222000111333 MMMPPPSSSFFF CCCoooaaaccchhh ooofff ttthhheee YYYeeeaaarrr JOVAN VAVIC • HEAD COACH • 19TH YEAR • USC USC head coach Jovan Vavic earns his fourth women’s MPSF Coach of the Year award (2013, 2010, 2004, 1999), leading the Trojans to a 24-1 record in 2013 and conference championship entering the NCAA Tournament. USC won its third MPSF Championship on April 28 in Berkeley, defeating top-ranked Stanford for the second time this year. Vavic has coached the Women of Troy to fifteen 20-win seasons, while the 24 wins this year is the most since winning the NCAA title in 2010. This year’s USC team carries the MPSF leader in scoring average (Monica Vavic, 2.84 GPG) and the top overall team scoring offense (14.96 GPG). The Trojans placed four players on this year’s all-tournament team, while five are honored as all-conference selections. USC holds a record of 434-132 (.767) with Vavic at the helm of the program.
