This beach has crystal clear waters and its substrate materials consist of rock, sand, mud, and rubble. In Indonesia, Decapoda diversity is still rare to be researched, especially in the beaches of Madura. Besides, the utilization of natural resources around the beach are rarely used for learning. This research aims to determine kinds of Decapoda in tidal area of Taman Pulau Poteran beach, Madura. This research is also used as source of biology learning. The design of this research is a descriptive research design. It was conducted on June-July at the lowest tide during the day with quadratic transect method. The results of this research showed that Decapoda found consist of many kinds, they are, Portunus pelagicus, Charybdis Natator, Charybdis feriatus, Charybdis japonica, Thalamita crenata, Carcinus maenas, Rhithropanopeus harrisii, Etisus laevimanus, Atergatis floridus, Xanthias lamarcki, Leptodius sanguineus, Uca dussumier, Ocypode cordimanus, Episesarma versicolor, Pilumnus vespertilio, Chionoecetes angulatus, Palaemonetes hiltoni, famuli Alpheidae, Betaeus longidactylus, Lysmata bahia, merguiensi Penaeus, Penaeus monodon, and Petrolisthes cabrilloi. Diversity Index value type Shannon-Wiener (H ') of 2.7 or Decapoda species diversity in Taman Pulau Poteran beach is high. Uniformity index value type (E) of 0.45 indicates poor uniformity between species, it means that the individual resource of each species are different. Index value of dominance (D) 0.076, indicates that there is no species which dominated other species. It means species of Decapoda in Poteran island is in a stable condition. The Results of the study can be used as a source of learning biology in the form of Book and posters. Keywords: Identification, Diversity, Decapoda Malang, 01 September 2015 Advisor 1 Writer, Drs. Zoological Studies 51(7): 1040-1050. Episesarma versicolor is an important commercial fishery product in Southeast Asia. In Thailand, this species is currently being overexploited. In order to provide necessary information for constructing a species management plan, we performed a population genetic analysis of this species living on the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand. Intraspecific variation was determined from complete sequences of the mitochondrial (mt)DNA control region (CR) with a size of 790-798 bp. MtDNA CR sequences of 72 individuals from 5 west coastal areas of southern Thailand, including Satun, Trang, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Ranong, were analyzed. In total, 62 haplotypes with 58 rare haplotypes were identified. Estimated values of haplotype and nucleotide diversities were 0.978 and 0.007, respectively. Neutrality tests (Tajima’s D and Fu’s FS statistics) showed that Andaman populations of E.

  • Indirect Ant-Protection Against Crab Herbivory: Damage-Induced
Functional Blackwell Publishing, Ltd. Ecology 2006 Indirect ant-protection against crab herbivory: 20, 52–57 damage-induced susceptibility to crab grazing may lead to its reduction on ant-colonized trees J. OFFENBERG,† D. J. MACINTOSH and M. G. NIELSEN Institute of Biological Sciences, Ole Worms Allé, Building 135, University of Aarhus, Universitetsparken, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark Summary 1. Mangrove trees colonized by weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) experience less insect and crab herbivory compared with trees without ants. However, it is unlikely that ants prey on and deter crabs as they do insects. Protection could be indirect if leaves damaged by insects are more susceptible to crab herbivory. 2. In the field and in laboratory tests, leaves with artificial holes simulating leaf beetle-feeding marks were more susceptible than intact leaves to damage by the crab Episesarma versicolor. 3. The study further revealed that damaged leaves showed increased susceptibility only to male crab feeding whereas females were indiscriminate, probably because of differ- ences in claw morphology between the sexes. 4. Combined with previous findings at the same field site, these results suggest that ants can indirectly protect trees against crab herbivory by directly removing insect herbiv- ores and thus decreasing the leaf damage they inflict. The system illustrates a complex trophic cascade involving density and trait-mediated indirect interactions. • Experimental Determination of Stable Carbon and Nitrogen Isotope Fractionation Between Mangrove Leaves and Crabs
Vol. 490: 91–105, 2013 MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Published September 17 doi: 10.3354/meps10421 Mar Ecol Prog Ser FREEREE ACCESSCCESS Experimental determination of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope fractionation between mangrove leaves and crabs Carolin M. Herbon, Inga Nordhaus* Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), Fahrenheitstraße 6, 28359 Bremen, Germany ABSTRACT: The analysis of benthic food webs in mangrove forests is complicated by the lack of experimental investigations of consumer-diet discrimination factors (Δ15N and Δ13C) for most man- grove invertebrates. This study aimed to determine the fractionation of δ13C and δ15N between mangrove leaves and Episesarma singaporense and E. versicolor (Sesarmidae) for 90 d in Java, Indonesia. The consumption rates of both species and stable isotope fractionation of leaves from 5 plant species (Acanthus ilicifolius, Aegiceras corniculatum, Avicennia alba, Derris trifoliata, Rhi- zophora apiculata) were compared. Δ15N between R. apiculata leaves and muscle tissue was 5.0‰ for E. singaporense and 5.4‰ for E. versicolor after 50 d. δ15N of muscle tissue increased signifi- cantly after 50 d, most likely due to the internal recycling of nitrogen. δ13C did not change during the experiment, and Δ13C was 5.1‰ for E. singaporense and 4.1‰ for E. versicolor after 90 d. Leaves of D. trifoliata and R. apiculata were preferentially consumed, indicating their higher nutritive value. We concluded that (1) the discrimination values for mangrove crabs feeding on a leaf diet are much higher than previously assumed, which can most likely be explained by the selective assimilation of isotopic heavy carbon compounds and by metabolic cycling of non-essen- tial amino acids; (2) the frequently used average discrimination factors are inappropriate for the study of benthic food webs in mangrove forests with a high biomass of leaf-eating crabs; and (3) E.

New record of the Sesarmid crab Episesarma versicolor (Tweedie, 1940) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Sesarmidae) from the West Coast of India Mithila Bhat1, Jigneshkumar Trivedi2* 1School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Goa University, Taleigao, Goa, India. 2Department of Life Sciences, Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan-384265, Gujarat, India Received 19 October 2020; Accepted 09 January 2021; Published online 02 March 2021 Abstract Episesarma versicolor (Tweedie, 1940) also known as violet vinegar crab is widely dis- tributed species in the south-east Asian countries. However, its presence in India is restricted, with just one record from Pichavaram and Vellar mangroves of Tamil Nadu state located on the east coast of India. The present paper reports the occurrence of E. versicolor for the rst time from Gujarat and Goa states located on the west coast of India. Keywords: Brachyura, Sesarmidae, New record, West coast of India. 1 Introduction The sesarmid genus Episesarma (De Man, 1895) contains some of the largest sesarmid crabs. The species of the genus are characterised by the number of tubercles on dorsal margin of the dactylus and the colouration of the chelae (Lee et al., 2015; Ser eneand Soh, 1967b). Currently Episesarma is represented by seven species: E. chentongense (Ser eneand Soh, 1967), E. crebrestriatum (Tesch, 1917), E. lafondii (Hombron and Jacquinot, 1846), E. mederi (Milne Edwards, 1853), E. palawa- nense (Rathbun, 1914), E. singaporense (Tweedie, 1936) and E. versicolor (Tweedie, 1940), out of which three species: E. chentongense, E. mederi and E. versicolor are reported from India (Manikantan et al., 2016; Trivedi et al., 2018). In India, the distribution of E.

They concern the flora and/or fauna in the mangrove forests along the Sri Lankan coast, addressing diversity, taxonomy, distribution, and ecological interactions. A total of 28 mangrove floral species from 13 plant families have been reported so far. Similarly, faunal diversity studies have reported 99 invertebrates, dominated by Arthropoda (n = 55) and Mollusca (n = 26), and 214 vertebrates comprising Pisces (n = 112), Aves (n = 72), Reptilia (n = 13) and Amphibia (n = 2). Most studies have been concentrated on the Southwestern coast (nflora = 20, nfauna = 6). Negombo has been a hotspot for mangrove research, with a higher number of studies (n = 11, n = 5). The majority of the mangrove flora fauna studies were focused on mangrove floral diversity and taxonomy and were conducted over recent years (2010–2019). Scientific data on mangrove fauna is restricted to a certain geographical extent.
