There’s no two ways about that.” — Neil Tennant. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN the Pet Shop Boys and the political has always been one of contention. In their four decades (and counting) of pop music, the duo—Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—have amassed a large discography, not to mention film scores, movie productions, and their own stage shows. In the process, they have often thrown a critical light on what they see as the great hypocrisies of music and stardom. ‘I don’t really like the idea of people projecting themselves as being important humanitarian figures, which is the tendency for rock personalities nowadays’, Tennant once told journalists, in reference to Bono and U2—a reference further explored in the song How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously? on the 1990 album Behaviour. In an interview with Reuters, Tennant elaborated: ‘I don’t want to talk about it. We are musicians, not politicians.’ That being said, there is no doubt that the Pet Shop Boys have shaped their music, their careers, and their very presence through politics, the presentation of memory, and history. Tennant’s background in political history aside, the oeuvre of the group is littered with allusions to historical figures, events, and circumstances, from King Zog of Albania and T.E. -

PET SHOP BOYS ANNOUNCE THE SECOND SET OF RELEASES IN ‘CATALOGUE: 1985-2012’, THE LANDMARK SERIES OF REISSUES OF THEIR PARLOPHONE STUDIO ALBUMS THE ALBUMS ‘YES’ AND ‘ELYSIUM’ ARE REMASTERED AND REISSUED WITH ‘FURTHER LISTENING’ ALBUMS OF ADDITIONAL AND PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED MATERIAL ‘YES’ AND ‘ELYSIUM’ REISSUES OUT OCTOBER 20TH Pet Shop Boys will release the second set of albums in their definitive ‘Catalogue: 1985-2012’ series of reissues of all their Parlophone studio albums. This second set sees the PSB albums ‘Yes’ from 2009 and ‘Elysium’ from 2012 reissued on October 20th. Both titles have been remastered and are accompanied by ‘Further listening’ albums of master quality bonus tracks and demos created in the same period as each album, as well as Pet Shop Boys’ own remixes of their tracks, including some previously unreleased material. Both albums will be packaged with an extensive booklet in which Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe discuss each song, illustrated with many archive photographs. The entire project is designed by Farrow. ‘Yes’ was produced by Brian Higgins and his production team Xenomania. The record debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart upon release and was nominated for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards. This expanded version of the album features guests including The Human League’s Phil Oakey, who shares vocals with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe on ‘This used to be the future’. Johnny Marr also appears on ‘Yes’, his guitar work featuring on several tracks including the single, ‘Did you see me coming?’. The album’s lead single and UK Top 20 hit, ‘Love Etc.’, became PSB’s ninth number one hit on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs chart in the USA, breaking the record for most chart-topping singles by a duo or group on the Billboard Dance Chart. -

The Review of Symbolic Logic, Page 1 of 40 WHAT IS A RULE OF INFERENCE? NEIL TENNANT The Ohio State University Abstract. We explore the problems that confront any attempt to explain or explicate exactly what a primitive logical rule of inference is, or consists in. We arrive at a proposed solution that places a surprisingly heavy load on the prospect of being able to understand and deal with specifications of rules that are essentially self-referring. That is, any rule ñ is to be understood via a specification that involves, embedded within it, reference to rule ñ itself. Just how we arrive at this position is explained by reference to familiar rules as well as less familiar ones with unusual features. An inquiry of this kind is surprisingly absent from the foundations of inferentialism— the view that meanings of expressions (especially logical ones) are to be characterized by the rules of inference that govern them. §1. Introduction. 1.1. Historical background: the recent confluence of philosophical and proof- theoretical investigations in logic. Influential philosophers of logic and language are once again, after a long Quinean interregnum, acknowledging the a priority and analyticity of deductive inference.1 The Dummettian anti-realist’s account of the epistemology of linguistic understanding had addressed matters of justification—of particular inference rules, and, therefore, of one’s choice of a preferred system of deductive proof as ‘the correct’ one.2 Among logicians, in a technical re-orientation hospitable to the Dummettian anti-realist’s philosophy of meaning, there has also been growing interest in ‘proof-theoretic semantics’:3 In proof-theoretic semantics, proofs are not merely treated as syntactic objects as in Hilbert’s formalist philosophy of mathematics, Received: March 17, 2018. -

Not surprisingly, our Dust was right in there, in three separate places. One was in Neil Tennant's 'Soundtrack of My Life' feature - what a nice fellow he is, maybe HE should have been collecting the HoF award. But enough about that. The second was in The Ten: Gay Icons. Number one was La Garland, and two was Stevie Nicks, but Dusty was third, beating Madonna into fourth place!!! Third was in the Twenty Most Fabulous Gay Moments in Pop, where David McAlmont wrote about her. Philosophical Perspectives, 16, Language and Mind, 2002 THE EMPEROR’S NEW CONCEPTS Neil Tennant The Ohio State University Christopher Peacocke, in A Study of Concepts, motivates his account of possession conditions for concepts by means of an alleged parallel with the conditions under which numbers are abstracted to give the numerosity of a predicate. There are, how- ever, logical mistakes in Peacocke’s treatment of numbers, which undermine his intended analogy. Nevertheless Peacocke’s account of possession conditions for con- cepts is not rendered inadequate simply by virtue of being deprived of the intended analogy and the motivation it was supposed to afford. His account of concepts de- serves still to be considered on its own merits, even if it is more idiosyncratic for being isolated from the paradigm case of numerical abstraction. Peacocke’s own account of concepts as abstract objects turns out, though, not to have the logical form that he himself was seeking for it. We show how to re-cast it in an equivalent form of the kind he requires. Then we re-formulate it so as to achieve complete generality. This exercise helps to clarify the central theses in Peacocke’s account of concepts. It invites the conclusion that his account of content-determination is rather platitudinous and unoriginal—except for a claim of ‘doxastic sufficiency’ for content- determination, which emerges at the end of the discussion. 1 Introduction Are concepts abstract the way numbers are? This question is phrased carefully. It is not the question ‘Are concepts ab- stracted the way numbers are?’. Concept-abstraction is the psychological or intellectual process whereby a thinker abstracts, from various instances of a kind, what is common to them. -

If the post punk years of the late seventies and early eighties continued the rally for individualism, Eyeless In Gaza - the duo of Martyn Bates and Pete Becker - were out there leaning against the banal more than most. With their first London appearance in nineteen years scheduled for July 29 at London's Bush Hall and a new album to follow later in the year, the dual release of the CD, 'No Noise' and DVD, 'Saw You In Reminding Pictures', on July 18 celebrates twenty five years of one of the UK's most idiosyncratic bands. Back in 1980 their self-released debut 7", 'Kodak Ghosts Run Amok', saw EIG claiming their particular space in the new wave scheme of things. Boasting a Wasp synth never sounding so triumphant, the single was as much a primal scream of expression as any punk onslaught. -

Its system of proof is set out. It is then shown that, although the system has no Cut rule, its relation of deducibility obeys Cut with epistemic gain. §1. The debate over logical reform. There is much dispute over which logic is the right logic—indeed, over whether there could even be such a thing as the right logic, rather than a spectrum of logics variously suited for different applications in different areas. Absolutists about logic regard the use of the definite article as justified; pluralists have their principled doubts. For those who engage in the absolutist debate, those whom we can call the quietists are willing to accept the full canon C of classical logic. Their opponents, whom we can call the reformists—intuitionists and relevantists prominent among them— argue that certain rules of classical logic lack validity, and have no right to be in the canon. Intuitionists, on the one hand, originally drew inspiration for their critique of classical logic from the requirements of constructivity in mathematical proof. According to the intuitionist’s construal of existence, a mathematical existence claim of the form ‘there is a natural number n such that F(n)’ requires its asserter to be able to provide a justifying instance—a constructively determinable number t for which one can prove (intuitionistically!) that F(t): F(t) xF(x) ∃ This means that one may not use the ‘back-door’, or indirect, reasoning that would be available to a classical mathematician, whereby in order to derive the conclusion that there is a natural number n such that F(n), it would be sufficient simply to assume that no natural number has the property F, and then (classically!) derive an absurdity from that assumption: (i) xF(x) ¬∃ . -

Neil We started to write this album in London in 2014. The first song we wrote was (the Neil Tennant answered some questions single) “The Pop Kids”… about the new album, Super, which comes Chris That was actually started on tour with Take That. three years after the brilliant success of Neil I didn’t know that…! Electric, their highest-charting album in Chris It was started in Munich. Hence it was originally called “Munich”. the UK and USA for 20 years. Neil On the tour with Take That, Chris had a little keyboard set-up. Chris After the shows I quite often don’t want a drink or even to go to the hotel bar – so rather than go to the hotel bar for one last drink I would switch the gear on and have a little go at writing some songs, without any thought of what they would be used for. But as I was doing this one (“The Pop Kids”) I did think it was rather good – so when we started writing for the album in Berlin I dug it up. • What inspired the lyrics for “The Pop Kids”? N It is sort of a true story. You may have noticed that the lyrics say: “Remember those days, the early 90s? We both applied for places at the same university.” Mark Farrow (PSB designer) thought it was autobiographical.
