  • Pet Shop Boys&Quot

CUE POINT AESTHETICS: THE PERFORMING DISC JOCKEY IN POSTMODERN DJ CULTURE By Benjamin De Ocampo Andres A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Humboldt State University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Sociology Committee Membership Dr. Jennifer Eichstedt, Committee Chair Dr. Renee Byrd, Committee Member Dr. Meredith Williams, Committee Member Dr. Meredith Williams, Graduate Coordinator May 2016 ABSTRACT CUE POINT AESTHETICS: THE PERFORMING DISC JOCKEY IN POSTMODERN DJ CULTURE Benjamin De Ocampo Andres This qualitative research explores how social relations and intersections of popular culture, technology, and gender present in performance DJing. The methods used were interviews with performing disc jockeys, observations at various bars, and live music venues. Interviews include both women and men from varying ages and racial/ethnic groups. Cultural studies/popular culture approaches are utilized as the theoretical framework, with the aid of concepts including resistance, hegemony, power, and subcultures. Results show difference of DJ preference between analog and digital formats. Gender differences are evident in performing DJ's experiences on and off the field due to patriarchy in the DJ scene. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and Foremost, I would like to thank my parents and immediate family for their unconditional support and love. You guys have always come through in a jam and given up a lot for me, big up. To "the fams" in Humboldt, you know who you are, thank you so much for holding me down when the time came to move to Arcata, and for being brothers from other mothers. A shout out to Burke Zen for all the jokes cracked, and cigarettes smoked, at "Chinatown." You help get me through this and I would have lost it along time ago.

  • 1-24-21 Sermon
1-24-21 "The Trouble with Mercy" Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 4:1-5 Central Christian Church David A. Shirey The reading began with the words, “The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” If this is the “second time” God instructed Jonah to go to Ninevah, what happened the first time? Well, the first time is at the beginning of Chapter 1 when God says, “Arise, go to Ninevah.. and cry against it; for their wickedness has come up before me” (Jonah 1:1, 2). “Go to Ninevah,” God says. Ninevah—capitol city of Assyria. Assyria, the nation that destroyed Israel in 721 B.C. Assyria, the nation that then subjugated and oppressed the southern kingdom of Judah for almost 100 years. Assyria: present-day Iraq. The book of Jonah begins with a prophet called up for duty—drafted to serve in the Persian Gulf as a missionary to his nation’s bitterest foe. Well, Jonah was a draft-dodger. He said, “Go to Ninevah? Nothin’ doin’!” and rather than heading north to Canada, he fled west toward Tarshish. Ninevah was due east by land. Jonah sailed due west by sea. Caught the first ship out of Joppa the next morning and went AWOL from the Lord’s command. Tarshish, many scholars believe, was a coastal city in Spain. Think Acapulco. Maui. Shangri-la. In other words, a much more preferable place to serve God than Ninevah.

  • Vestiges of Midsummer Ritual in Motets for John the Baptist
Early Music History (2011) Volume 30. Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S0261127911000027 M A A Email: [email protected] FIRE, FOLIAGE AND FURY: VESTIGES OF MIDSUMMER RITUAL IN MOTETS FOR JOHN THE BAPTIST The thirteenth-century motet repertory has been understood on a wide spectrum, with recent scholarship amplifying the relationship between the liturgical tenors and the commentary in the upper voices. This study examines a family of motets based on the tenors IOHANNE and MULIERUM from the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist (24 June). Several texts within this motet family make references to well-known traditions associated with the pagan festival of Midsummer, the celebration of the summer solstice. Allusions to popular solstitial practices including the lighting of bonfires and the public criticism of authority, in addition to the cultural awareness of the sun’s power on this day, conspicuously surface in these motets, particularly when viewed through the lens of the tenor. The study suggests the further obfuscation of sacred and secular poles in the motet through attentiveness to images of popular, pre-Christian rituals that survive in these polyphonic works. In the northern French village of Jumièges from the late Middle Ages to the middle of the nineteenth century, a peculiar fraternal ritual took place. Each year on the evening of the twenty-third of June, the Brotherhood of the Green Wolf chose its new chief. Arrayed in a brimless green hat in the shape of a cone, the elected master led the men to a priest and choir; Portions of this study were read at the Medieval and Renaissance Conference at the Institut für Musikwissenschaft, University of Vienna, 8–11 August 2007 and at the University of Chicago’s Medieval Workshop on 19 May 2006.
