Aurobindo Ghosh, “The Renaissance in India” (1918) Aurobindo Ghosh (later Sri Aurobindo) (1872–1950) was a central political, religious, and philosophical fi gure in the Indian renaissance. Bengali born and Cambridge-educated, he was trained in Victorian English literature, sat his Cambridge examinations in classics, and taught English at Baroda Col- lege. He became involved in radical politics and while imprisoned discovered Indian philosophy. He spent the remainder of his life at his ashram in Pondi- cherry, producing an enormous volume of religious and philosophical work, including his masterpiece The Life Divine. Many Indian philosophers of the colonial period visited him in Pondicherry, and his infl uence on Indian phi- losophy is considerable. In this essay he addresses the meaning of the Indian renaissance for India’s national identity. Usually the Left Front government effectively controlled by the Marxist Communist Party (CPM), that has ruled the state for the past 34 years until its recent defeat in the state assembly elections, is held responsible for the plight of industry in the state. The party and its followers, on the other hand, blame denial of the due share of the state in the central resources by a hostile government at the center for industrial retardation. This paper takes a close look at the available statistical evidence to argue that the main reason for the decline is a direct outcome of poor work culture, political interference, and failure of governance that has resulted in industrial anarchy that scares off private investment in the state. While the Left Front has its share of responsibility, the newly anointed Chief Minister of the State, Mamata Banerjee, has herself contributed generously to fostering and cultivating this chaos by calling wildcat general strikes in her erstwhile role as the ‘one person opposition party’. The only thing that can revive industry in West Bengal is liberating civil administration from the grip of political party bosses. -

Corpus Juris ISSN: 2582-2918 The Law Journal website: www.corpusjuris.co.in AN INTROSPECTION OF FILM CENSORSHIP IN INDIA -SUBARNO BANERJEE1 AND RITOJIT DASGUPTA2 ABSTRACT Cinema has been considered to be one of the most potent instrument of expression over a considerable amount of period. It is often considered to be a magnificent medium to communicate with people and impart knowledge and awareness. A traditional theatre system existed much before screen cinema could assert its authority in India and is said to have played a major role in nurturing emotions of freedom struggle through its plays in the pre-independence era. It was in 1913 India produced its first full-length feature film Raja Harishchandra. Cinema gradually became a powerful medium and went on to impact the lives of people, thoughts and even their political views. The medium has been witnessed to gain huge popularity and at present has become an integral part of common man’s leisure. Various statistics claim that India constitutes one of the largest film industries in the world in terms of number of films produced every year. Freedom of speech and expression is one of the most sacrosanct rights and is regarded as an integral concept in modern liberal democracies3. Society can develop only by free exchange of ideas4. However, since the drafting of the Constitution in 1947, freedom of speech and expression was considered controversial and received periodical dissent. According to Article 19(1) (a) of Part III of the Constitution of India, citizens shall have a right to freedom and expression. Films enjoy the same status and right so far as constitutional freedom relating to expression of ideas and spreading of ideas and messages are concerned but at the same time it places certain necessary restrictions on the content, with a view towards maintaining integrity of the state, public order, decency and morality and also communal and religious harmony, given the history of communal tension in the nation. -

Portuguese settlements in Bengal In Bengal Portuguese had three main trade points • Saptagram: Porto Pequeno or Little Haven • Chittagong: Porto Grande or Great Haven. • Hooghly or Bandel: In 1599 Portuguese constructed a Church of the Basilica of the Holy Rosary, commonly known as Bandel Church. Till today it stands as a memorial to the Portuguese settlement in Bengal. The Moghuls eventually subdued the Portuguese and conquered Chittagong and Hooghly. By the 18th century the Portuguese presence had almost disappeared from Bengal. But the Portuguese influence lives on Bengal in other ways— • Few descendents of Luso-Indians (descendants of the offspring of mixed unions between Portuguese and local women) and descendants of Christian converts are living in present Bengal. -

PAPER 1 DSE-A-1 SEM -5: HISTORY OF BENGAL(c.1757-1905) I. POLITICAL HISTORY OF BENGAL UNDER THE NAWABS:RISE OF BRITISH POWER IN BENGAL FROM THE BATTLE OF PLASSEY TO BUXAR. The beginning of British rule in India may be traced to the province of Bengal which emerged as the base from which the British first embarked on their political career that would last for almost two centuries. After the death of Aurangzeb various parts of the Mughal Empire became independent under different heads. Bengal became independent under the leadership of Alivardi Khan who maintained friendly relation with the English officials throughout his reign. However he did not allow them to fortify their settlements till the end of his rule up to 1756CE. Alivardi Khan was succeded by his grandson Nawab Shiraj –ud-Daulah who as soon as ascending the throne demanded of the English that they should trade on the same basis as in the times of Murshid Quli Khan. The English did not agree to the Nawab’s proposal rather they levied heavy duties on Indian goods entering Calcutta which was under their control. They also started fortifying their settlements against the order of the Nawab. All these amounted to a direct challenge to the Nawab’s Sovereignty. Shiraj-ud – Daulah in order to control the English activities and maintain the laws of the land seized the English Factory at Kasimbazar, marched on to Calcutta and occupied the Fort Williams in 1756 .As the Nawab went on to celebrate this easy victory of his, he made a mistake to underestimate the strength of his enemy. -

This study is an exploratory attempt to put the wisdom of the Fakirs in conversation with established social theorists of the body, arguing that the Aristotelian conceptualization of habitus is more useful than Bourdieu’s in explaining the power of bodily practices of the initiates. My ethnographic research with the prominent Fakirs—participant observation, in-depth interview, and textual analysis of Lalon’s songs—shows how the body can be educated not only to defy, resist, or transgress dominant socio-political norms, but also to cultivate an alternative subjectivity and sociality. -

DOI: 10.30395/WSR.201906_12(2).0002 National Struggle from a Postcolonial Literary Perspective: Nuruldiner Sarajiban Sabiha Huq ABSTRACT Leela Gandhi refers to Ranajit Guha’s opinion that Indian nationalism “achieves its entitlement through the systematic mobilization, regulation, disciplining and harnessing of subaltern energy, that nationalism integrates the randomly distributed energies of miscellaneous popular movements” (Dominance 144, qtd. in Gandhi 111). Syed Shamsul Haq (1935-2016), a literary stalwart of Bangladesh, has always been conscious of the contribution of the common rural people of Bangladesh to the nationalist cause. The mobilization of the peasants against British rule, as dramatized in Haq’s verse play Nuruldiner Sarajiban (1992), is one such movement, the systematic accumulation of which Guha terms as “subaltern” energy that culminates in anti- colonial nationalism in Bangladesh. Haq recreates the history of the Mughalhaat peasant insurgency of 1783 in Rangpur in his play in the 1990s, a specific juncture in the history of independent Bangladesh that requires the play to act as a clarion call to countrymen to unite against the then dictatorial government headed by Hussain Muhammad Ershad. The play simultaneously operates on two time frames: First, it establishes the position of the subaltern protagonist against the British colonizers that marks the postcolonial stance of the playwright, and then it stands as an inspirational symbol amidst its contemporary political crisis. The paper examines how the verse play illustrates both the colonial propaganda, the two-nation theory of the British colonial rule, and the anti-colonial agenda of the mass peasant movement— ascertaining Nuruldin’s position as a public hero, and also as an emissary of freedom and solidarity for all people in Bangladesh against neo-colonialism in a time of post-colony. -

Conditioning Factors for Fertility Decline in Bengal: History, Language Identity, and Openness to Innovations ALAKA MALWADE BASU SAJEDA AMIN DECLINES IN FERTILITY in the contemporary world tend to be explained in contemporary terms. Immediate causes are sought and generally center around issues of changing demand and supply. More specifically, the pro- ponents of the importance of changing demand stress the changing struc- tural conditions that alter the costs and benefits of children, while the “sup- ply-siders” give central importance to family planning programs which purportedly increase awareness and practice of contraception so that birth control becomes both desirable and possible. In recent years, these explanations have become enriched by another class of explanations that focus on the spread of positive attitudes toward controlled fertility and toward contraception. These attitudes may arise through means that are only tangentially related to changing economic en- vironments or to government population policy. In particular, they may develop through a process of diffusion of ideas from individuals already posi- tively inclined in this direction. Montgomery and Casterline (1998) provide a clear definition of such diffusion of attitudes in the context of social change: they refer to diffusion as “a process in which individuals’ decisions…are affected by the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of others with whom they come in contact” (p. 39). These “others” may be of different kinds—peer groups, elites, family, friends, and so on—and the contact may occur in a vari- ety of ways. Montgomery and Casterline (1998) postulate three principal mechanisms for these “social effects”: social learning, social influence, and social norms. -

India and Pakistan got independence from the British rule in 1947. Pakistan was formed for the Muslims and India had a majority of Hindus. Pakistan had two parts, East and West, which were separated by about 1,000 miles. East Pakistan was mainly the eastern part of the province of Bengal. The capital of Pakistan was Karachi in West Pakistan and was moved to Islamabad in 1958. However, due to discrimination in economy and ruling powers against them, the East Pakistanis vigorously protested and declared independence on March 26, 1971 under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But during the year prior to that, to suppress the unrest in East Pakistan, the Pakistani government sent troops to East Pakistan and unleashed a massacre. And thus, the war for liberation commenced. The Reasons for war Both East and West Pakistan remained united because of their religion, Islam. West Pakistan had 97% Muslims and East Pakistanis had 85% Muslims. However, there were several significant reasons that caused the East Pakistani people to fight for their independence. West Pakistan had four provinces: Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and the North-West Frontier. The fifth province was East Pakistan. Having control over the provinces, the West used up more resources than the East. Between 1948 and 1960, East Pakistan made 70% of all of Pakistan's exports, while it only received 25% of imported money. In 1948, East Pakistan had 11 fabric mills while the West had nine.
