Esta compilación que sigue el criterio utilizado en 1982, consta de tres secciones. 1. Bio-bibliografías, que contiene las cronologías de las personalida­ des cubanas fallecidas en el año, organizados en estricto orden alfabético y que consideramos de suma utilidad para los estudio­ sos de la cultura cubana. 2. Hasta 1959 desempeña alternativamente estos oficios 1938 Comienza a estudiar escultura en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, con el profesor Juan José Sicre 1939 Incursiona en el arte haciendo esculturas por afición, sin aban­ donar sus labores de obrero 1942 Abandona ios estudios, aunque sigue trabajando la escultura sin orientación académica 1946 Expone por primera vez en la II! Exposición Nacional de Pin­ tura y Escultura, en el Capitolio Nacional 1949 Contrae matrimonio con Olga Hernández Pérez, su compañera de toda la vida 1950 La producción artística de Antigua ha sido analizada por él mis­ mo en tres etapas. Por esta fecha comienza a manifestarse en la la. etapa: Figurativa, que es de adiestramiento y bús­ queda y produce dentro de los cánones aprendidos de su maestro. El artista muestra con motivos afrocubanos, su vo­ luntad de forma y su independencia del realismo académico. 1953 En el mes de abril comienza a trabaJar con el Grupo escul­ tórico “ Los Once” que expone por primera vez en la Galería Matanzas. Editor: Daniel James Vol. 1, No. 13, August 31, 1963 INSIDE CUBA NEW SOVIET MILITARY COMPLEX IN PINAR DEL RIO Sources inside Cuba provide facts pointing to the existence of a new Soviet mili­ tary complex in Cuba 1s westernmost province, Pinar del Rio, which commands the Florida Straits. The main Soviet installation and the site of Soviet military GHQ is at La Gobernadora hills, near the country's principal naval base of Marie!. Five large tunnels have been constructed in the La Gobernadora area. They are 105 ft. wide -- permitting two - way traffic -- and have reinforced ceilings 30 ft . high. Two of the tunnels penetrate La Gobernadora hills laterally for a distance of 6 miles , according to a Rebel Army lieutenant who personally toured the tunnels during their construction and has defected. Guided missiles are secreted in the tunnels, according to reports from the mili­ tary arm of the Cuban resistance movement. Other sources inside Cuba say that at least one tunnel has been air-conditioned for the storage of nuclear warheads, and that another has been equipped with refrigerating equipment for storing liquid oxygen used for ballis ­ tic missiles.     Music, Money, and the Man: A Comparative Case Study of the Political Economy of Music in Cuba and Argentina By Paul Ruffner Honors Capstone Prof. Clarence Lusane May 4, 2009 Political economy is an interpretive framework which has been applied to many different areas in a wide range of societies. Music, however, is an area which has received remarkably little attention; this is especially surprising given the fact that music from various historical periods contains political messages. An American need only be reminded of songs such as Billy Holliday’s “Strange Fruit” or the general sentiments of the punk movement of the 1970s and 80s to realize that American music is not immune to this phenomenon. Cuba and Argentina are two countries with remarkably different historical experiences and economic structures, yet both have experience with vibrant traditions of music which contains political messages, which will hereafter be referred to as political music. That being said, important differences exist with respect to both the politics and economics of the music industries in the two countries. Whereas Cuban music as a general rule makes commentaries on specific historical events and political situations, its Argentine counterpart is much more metaphorical in its lyrics, and much more rhythmically and structurally influenced by American popular music. These and other differences can largely be explained as resulting from the relations between the community of musicians and the state, more specifically state structure and ideological affiliation in both cases, with the addition of direct state control over the music industry in the Cuban case, whereas the Argentine music industry is dominated largely by multinational concerns in a liberal democratic state.

Este año, en el marco de la celebración del Mundial de Fútbol a realizarse en Brasil, a nivel internacional se ha lanzado para la prevención de las ITS-VIH/sida, la iniciativa global “Protege la Meta” Infórmate, protégete, No discrimines, con el propósito de no perder de vista la meta de llegar a CERO nuevas infecciones por VIH, CERO muertes como consecuencia del sida y CERO discriminación por razón de vivir con esa condición. Objetivo general Contribuir a la reducción de las conductas sexuales de riesgo en poblaciones clave en el contexto del período vacacional. Objetivos específicos 1. Fomentar acciones de comunicación dirigidas hacia las poblaciones clave y la comunidad en general, para la adopción de conductas sexuales responsables, protegidas y de autocuidado utilizando la influencia y difusión del Mundial del Fútbol 2. Incrementar la capacitación, compromiso y vínculos con los comunicadores/as, periodistas y promotores/as de salud, así como especialistas y directivos/as de salud pública, relacionados con la prevención de las ITS-VIH/sida. Prioridades ◌ Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual: sífilis, gonorrea, condiloma y herpes genital. ◌ Infección por el VIH: incrementar la difusión de información acerca de la severidad de la infección por el VIH, la promoción del uso del condón y búsqueda activa de casos a través de actividades de “Hazte la prueba”.

    The Beginnings of Radio Habana Cuba by José Altshuler, Dr.Sc.* The first decade of the 20th century saw the installation and regular operation of the first radio communication stations in Cuba, using De Forest and Telefunken low- and medium- frequency spark transmitters to provide wireless telegraphy services, essentially ship-shore. By 1916, in the context of World War I, the Cuban government equipped its station at the entrance of the bay of Havana with a 20 kW transmitter so that it could reach “the United States and [...] any ship 500 miles or more from the island” [5]. Radio broadcasting began in 1922, initially in an amateurish way, and shortly after with a 500 watt medium-wave transmitter installed and operated in Havana by ITT through its subsidiary, the Cuban Telephone Company. Erected with a view to enhancing the corpo- rate image of ITT, the facility was one of the nine most powerful ones in the Western hemisphere at the time [6]. Commercial broadcasting expanded rapidly from 29 medium- wave stations operating in 1923 to 81 in 1935, when the number of radio receivers in the country was about 45 000 [3]. By the end of 1933, the first shortwave commercial broadcasting station was in- stalled. A few other low-power shortwave transmitters went into regular operation afterwards for the purpose of serving the interior of the country, but they were not effective enough and most of them were put off after some time. Only a few low-power shortwave broadcasting stations remained in operation in Cuba in the 1950s, each one dedicated to the simultaneous transmission of the ordinary commercial programs broadcast by associated medium-wave stations serving a national audience.

It covers the period from 20:00 hrs. on September 06th to 14:00 hrs. on September 07th.The next report will be issued on or around 08/09. Highlights Category 5 Hurricane Irma, the fifth strongest Atlantic hurricane on record, will hit Cuba in the coming hours. Cuba has declared the Hurricane Alarm Phase today in seven provinces in the country, with 5.2 million people (46% of the Cuban population) affected. More than 1,130,000 people (10% of the Cuban population) are expected to be evacuated to protection centers or houses of neighbors or relatives. Beginning this evening, heavy waves are forecasted in the eastern part of the country, causing coastal flooding on the northern shores of Guantánamo and Holguín Provinces. 1,130,000 + 600 1,031 people Tons of pregnant evacuated food secured women protected Situation overview Heavy tidal waves that accompany Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, began to affect the northern coast of Cuba’s eastern provinces today, 7 September. With maximum sustained winds exceeding 252 kilometers (km) per hour, the hurricane is advancing through the Caribbean waters under favorable atmospheric conditions that could contribute to its intensification.
