60 • Articles • More Different than the Same: Customary Characterization of Alternative Relationship Groups and Types SANDRA MIZUMOTO POSEY Metropolitan State University of Denver SYDNEY FOWLER Metropolitan State University of Denver Abstract: This essay argues that non-monogamous relationship types exhibit enough continuity, artistry, and variation for the relationship types themselves to be considered folklore (rather than merely folk groups that generate folklore). Across variations, non- monogamous practices share much, including a tendency to both resist and reinforce dominant ideals. In this paper we focus on the ways members of one group perceive another to serve to anchor the definer simultaneously as more in and more out of the mainstream. Participants use their relationship configurations, as well as more common types of folklore such as narrative, costume, and folk speech, to communicate their messages about who they are. Often this message is packaged with an example of another group to demonstrate their proximity to mainstream values either through rebellion or by embracing these values. Preface I was on the far side of divorce and looking rather cynically from the shore at the whole institution of marriage. It happens. Disillusionment is an inevitable stage of the mourning process. My cynicism led me to ponder the viability of other relationship models. Living in a new state and beginning a new life, I set about exploring these possibilities. I began by attending “meet up”(http://www.meetup.com/) groups where I met practitioners of polyamory. Several failed dalliances, culminated by one in which I was essentially told I was fifth in the hierarchy of partners in a particular man’s life, led me to decide polyamory was not some alternative nirvana. -

AMY HART Amy Hart is a graduate student in History at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Her research focuses on modern religious history and religiously diverse commu- nities, particularly in the American West. Her master’s thesis, titled “Gods and Gurus in the City of Angels: Aimee Semple McPherson, Swami Para- mananda, and Los Angeles in the 1920s” explores religious diversity in 1920s Los Angeles. Contact Details: [email protected] Abstract This paper explores social and political events of the late 1950s and ‘60s that gave rise to a new wave of religious movements, and out of them, new religious communities in the United States. This paper specifically focuses on economic affluence, social activism, increasing education levels, and the Immigration Act of 1965 as the major social and political factors that sparked the development of these new religious movements. Three categories of religious communities are used as case studies representing the new wave of religious movements: Eastern religious communities, New Age religious communities, and the Jesus Movement communes. While communities of each category responded to the social and po- litical changes of the ‘60s differently, this paper attempts to bring together those various responses and show them as representative of the general counterculture movement already in full swing during the 1960s. SADOMASOCHISM AND THE BDSM COMMUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States: Kinky People Unite chronicles the development of sadomasochistic sexuality and its communities in the United States from the post-war period to the present day. Having evolved from scattered networks of sadomasochists to a coherent body bound by shared principles of “safe, sane, consensual,” activists worked to trans- form popular perceptions of their community, end its routine harassment by law enforcement and win inclusion in American society. Often paralleling the work of LGBTQ activists, people who engaged in BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism) transformed both their own sexual practices and how outsiders perceived them, successfully changing popular perceptions of them from fascists, murderers, and outlaws to people liv- ing an alternative lifestyle. The development of this community highlights the interactions of people of different sexual orientations within a sexual commu- nity, the influence of various campaigns for sexual freedom, and the BDSM community’s influence on popular perceptions of sexuality and sexual freedom. The text’s historical perspective gives depth and texture to a specific dimension of American history of sexuality. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the history of sexual- ity. Its clear and direct approach offers an important and useful chronology of a movement that has long been neglected. Stephen K. Beyond Hippies and Rabbit Food: The Social Effects of Vegetarianism and Veganism An Undergraduate Senior Comparative Sociology Thesis By Anna Lindquist Abstract Depending on the actors involved and the environment, vegetarians and vegans may either be met with acceptance, tolerance, or hostility when they divulge their dietary practices. By interviewing vegetarians and vegans about these social interactions, this study has sought to conceptualize the subjects’ treatment as well as their feelings and actions. Throughout the study ethnographic methods have been used, as well as identity and social deviance theory, and historical information about the evolution of vegetarianism. All this has led to a better understanding of how vegetarians and vegans balance their alternative lifestyle with mainstream social norms. 2 Introduction I never questioned my food choices for the first eighteen years of my life.
