Mabellini, Political Survival and Il Conte Di Lavagna Alexander Weatherson
Mabellini, political survival and Il conte di Lavagna Alexander Weatherson [...when the order form had been passed over the counter of the famous Library requesting the vocal score of Il conte di Lavagna, there was a long pause - then the lady came back and said there did not seem to be an opera by Bellini with this name…] Once a musical personality of considerable renown, if mostly as a conductor, Teodulo Mabellini should nowadays perhaps be described as Mercadante’s legacy to Padania. Born in Pistoia on 2 April 1817, he studied locally before removing to Florence where soon he was hailed as a prodigy. To such an extent indeed that after the plaudits and astonishment of his 1836 début with an opera called Matilde e Toledo set to a terrible mouthful of a libretto by a certain don Giuseppe Tigri (not “Matilde a Toledo” or “Matilde di Toledo” as we are often told - Toledo is the name of Matilde’s unfortunate husband) sung by students and dilettanti at the Teatro Alfieri, he was sent off to improve himself (per perfezionarsi) with Saverio Mercadante in Novara where the latter held the post of Maestro di Cappella. This impressive endorsement of his potential apparently on the initiative of a group of concittadini together with the famous impresario Alessandro Lanari, but at the expense of none-other than the Grand-Duke of Tuscany, Leopoldo II. An amiable, compliant, competent youth he thus achieved a fluency that was wholly meridional matched by an instrumental knowhow that was frankly of the north. On reflection, it may only be by mischance that he failed to generate the same kind of serious acclaim that sustained far-more famous composers with whose careers he overlapped. -

Heft 3/56. Jahrgang Unsere Kulturförderung: Gut Für Die Kultur
2009 Heft 3/56. -

Giacomo Puccini – Quartetto in D” Per Archi
Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Braşov Series VIII: Performing Arts • Vol. 11 (60) No. 1 – 2018 Giacomo Puccini – Quartetto in D” per archi Raluca TONESCU (IRIMIA)1 Abstract: Giacomo Puccini’s works for a string quartet are: three minutes, the Crisantemi elegy and the String Quartet in D Major, which is the only complete piece we have. This work has four parts and was composed between 1881 and 1883, when Puccini was studying at Milan Conservatory. This quartet was first published in its complete version by the Italian publishing house Casa Ricordi. All four parts of the Quartet were discovered in different places, either as manuscripts or as transcriptions for other chamber works made by his younger brother, Michele Puccini. The fact that all these parts were put together in one piece has been subject of thorough research, of which Dieter Schickling is the most important. In his volume about Puccini, The works of Giacomo Puccini. A complete catalogue, he describes all the composer’s manuscripts in detail. Key-words: Giacomo Puccini, quartetto in D. 1. Introduction String Quartet's history indicates the first signs of the occurrence of the Quartet as genre in the compositions of Giuseppe Tartini and Alessandro Scarlatti, as sonatas a quarto from their creations, VII-VIII century (Bughici 1978, 88). If Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) is for the Symphony and for piano sonatas a guide on the way of completion, for the String Quartet he is the creator. The structure of the beginning Quartets is five parts: allegro-adagio-allegro-minuet- minuet- allegro finale, and after only a few years, starting with op. -

The Wind-Band Phenomenon in Italy: a Short Socio-Historical Survey and Its Effect on Popular Musical Education
Journal of Liberal Arts and Humanities (JLAH) Issue: Vol. 1; No. 11; November 2020 pp. 1-21 ISSN 2690-070X (Print) 2690-0718 (Online) Website: www.jlahnet.com E-mail: [email protected] Doi: 10.48150/jlah.v1no11.2020.a1 The Wind-Band phenomenon in Italy: A short socio-historical survey and its effect on popular musical education Prof. Emanuele Raganato University of Salento (Italy) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Wind-Bands are musical ensembles existing all around the world, but with a stronger traditional presence in certain regions of the globe. One of these regions is Southern Italy. In this geographical area, this phenomenon developed historically over two centuries and has taken on shapes now considered traditional. Thanks to Wind-Bands, historically, millions of Italians have participated in collective musical activities as musicians or listeners and have been trained in music. Wind-Bands, in fact, for most of the 19th and 20th centuries have been the main means of spreading musical culture in Italy and the world and the only way for working class youth to learn a musical instrument. Thanks to a careful examination of the publications on the local Wind- Bands through the historiographic method, we have outlined a frame that explains the change in the social role of the Bands from the end of the 19th century to today. The conclusion is that today the Wind-Band has assumed a new morphology that, however, would deserve to be reconsidered taking into account the new social changes taking place (emigration of the middle class, immigration, social reforms and the music education system, and so on.) to understand if, as in the past, the Wind-Band can still have a fundamental functional role in local communities for social cohesion and music education, or at least imagine future scenarios to reconsider this role. -
