Syllable Structure in Umatilla Sahaptin* Tymoteusz Alan Chrzanowski A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics Swarthmore College December 2018 Abstract Umatilla Sahaptin is a Shaptian language spoken in North-Eastern Oregon by the Umatilla tribe. While it has some documentation, such as a dictionary and sketch grammar, there are still acknowledged gaps in the literature. The purpose of this thesis is to fill one of those gaps with a description of syllable structure. To do this I compare data gathered from speakers of Umatilla with published accounts of sylla ble structure in the mutually intelligible sister language Yakima. After establishing what is meant by syllable structure and what is known about Yakima, I discuss the data I gathered. Using word list and sentence elicitations, stories, poems, and songs I conclude that Umatilla syllable structure is very similar to Yakima's, with some differences, namely in maximal margins, minimal words, and licensing of sonority sequence defying clusters. Chinookan Villages of the Lower Columbia HENRY ZENK, YVONNE HAJDA, AND ROBERT BOYD VILLAGES WERE THE CENTER of Chinookan life, filling the role that tribes did for Native people in other parts of North America. Every village of any size or significance had a recognized leader or chief, and constituted a named local group with which its members identified themselves. Although the villages themselves are long vanished, early travelers, missionaries, and settlers have left us eyewitness accounts of what some were like. The names and approximate locations of many more can be reconstructed from historical sources and information shared by later generations of lower Columbia -

Description 1.1 Tenino; They spoke a Sahaptin language of the Penutian phylum (1) 1.2 Tqn (1) 1.3 Oregon, Warm Springs Reservation (1). 1.4 The Tenino lived in north-central Oregon and south-central Washington along the Columbia River from the Deschutes River in the west to the Umatilla River in the east. They moved to the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington and the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Oregon (2). 1.5 Influence: The Lewis and Clark Expedition first noted The Tenino people late in October 1805, when several members of the band were recruited to help the Corps to port their boats and equipment around the impassible Celilo Falls. In 1855, the Tenino people were made a party to the Treaty with the Tribes of Middle Oregon, which was negotiated by Oregon Superintendent of Indian Affairs Joel Palmer. The Warm Springs bands are today a part of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, which governs the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Central Oregon The Tenino people have a right by treaty to use the lands around Government Camp, Orgeon on Mount Hood (5). 1.6 Warm Springs was first settled soon after the Treaty of 1855 by Tygh and Wasco, as well as Tenino remnants. The Northern Paiutes arrived in 1879. The Three primary tribes finally organized as the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in 1937. (7) 1.7 50 (Golla 2007). Heart of the Palus
Acknowledgements Heart of the Palús received funding from the Walla Walla District Corps of Engineers in cooperation with the Federal Columbia River Power System. This book is part of a Public Awareness Plan to promote public interpretative programs and cultural resource stewardship. The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation History/Archaeology Program provided the background research and expertise for the storybook narrative and illustrations. Much of the history of the Palús people comes from Colville tribal elders, Palús and Nez Perce, who over the years shared their stories with History/Archaeology Program staff for future research and education. The History/Archaeology Program is guided by the Colville Business Council who supports cultural resource management in the traditional territories of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Dedication We dedicated this book to the tribal elders who came before us, and to the future generations who will continue our traditions. About the Author/Illustrator Author, L.E. Bragg and Artist/Designer, Patrick Marich are a mother and son team who collaborated to write and illustrate the Heart of the Palús book for the Colville Confederated Tribes. Both Author and Illustrator currently reside in the Greater Puget Sound Area. L.E. Bragg is a former resident of Inchelium, Washington, where she lived and taught elementary school. She is a graduate of the University of Washington and the author of multiple books, articles and educational stories. Ms. Bragg’s books celebrate the history, scenery, and cultural diversity of the Pacific Northwest. She is the published author of two children’s books and three non-fiction chapter books. -

Walla Walla Indians, Walla Walla Is a Penutian Language of the Western Plateau
1. Description 1.1 Name of society, language, and language family: Walla Walla Indians, Walla Walla is a Penutian language of the Western Plateau. It is spoken natively by only a handful of elders there, but some younger people are working to keep their ancestral language alive. Some linguists consider Walla Walla to be one dialect of a single Sahaptin language, and others consider it to be one of three or four distinct Sahaptin languages. (3) 1.2 ISO code (3 letter code from ethnologue.com): waa (1) 1.3 Location (latitude/longitude): Umatilla Indian Reservation (Reserve) is located in Cayuse, Umatilla County, OR 45°40'0" N Longitude: 118°33'0" W (2) The Walla Wallas lived about 12 miles from the junction of the Snake and Columbia rivers in present-day southern Washington (7) 1.4 Brief history: The Walla Walla is a native North American tribe centered in the U.S. Northwest. The tribe's traditional customs include horse raising, storytelling, arts and crafts, drumming and singing as well as practicing the ancient religion Washat. Today, most members of the Walla Walla tribe live in the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, together with the Cayuse and Umatilla peoples. (14) Geographically and linguistically they were closely associated with the Nez Perces. (16) 1.5 Influence of missionaries/schools/governments/powerful neighbors: The Walla Walla encountered the Lewis and Clark Expedition both in 1805, during their trip down the Columbia River, and in 1806 during their return upriver. The Americans were welcomed warmly by the Walla Walla chief Yellepit Lewis and Clark stayed for several days in April, 1806. -

IK: Other Ways of Knowing Peer Reviewed Landscapes’ Lessons: Native American Cultural Geography in Nineteenth-Century Oregon and Washington Mathias D. Bergmann Associate Professor of History Randolph-Macon College* Abstract: The depth and complexity of the cultural significance of physical geographic spaces to Native Americans is often underappreciated or misunderstood. For Pacific Northwest indigenous groups, landscapes contained lessons by which to live and histories of their people and their neighbors. The stories embedded in the landscapes not only augmented the oral tradition but were also crucial to the maintenance of socio-cultural values of native communities. The stories the landscape produced served as cultural reminders, but their efficacy depended upon continued contact with those locales. Knowing this helps us better understand the upheaval wrought by the US removal policy, which relocated Indians away from familiar landscapes and the lessons they imparted to remote and too often mute reservation lands.
