BBC PROMS An icon of the 1960s, Scott Walker has travelled from Walker Brothers teen idol to avant-garde contemporary musician, influencing artists from David Bowie and The Songs Of Scott Walker Leonard Cohen to Goldfrapp along the way. 1967-1970 Andre Paine, standard.co.uk: with Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley, Rather than revisiting The Walker Brothers’ hits, conductor Jules Buckley and the John Grant, Susanne Sundfor Heritage Orchestra focused on the singer’s solo albums between 1967 and 1970. Heritage Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley With a reclusive reputation, Walker hasn’t toured for decades and he never actually Royal Albert Hall, London, UK performed these classics on stage, though gave his blessing to this late-night Prom. His songs were in safe hands: the arrangements were immaculate, the guest vocalists July 25, 2017 devoted fans. Jarvis Cocker immersed himself in the lyrics amid the swooping strings on Boy Child, while Plastic Palace People’s strange narrative and kitchen-sink drama clearly influenced his band Pulp. Cocker didn’t attempt Walker’s velvety baritone, though his interpretations were richly expressive, including flamenco moves during Little Things (That Keep Us Together). John Grant’s vocal prowess made him the obvious choice for The Seventh Seal, alongside bursts of mariachi trumpet. Channelling her inner Sixties siren, Norwegian singer Susanne Sundfør also did the songs justice. But it was Cocker and fellow Sheffield crooner Richard Hawley who captured the music’s intimacy and agony. Although he baulked at recreating Walker’s scatting on The Old Man’s Back Again, Hawley had no trouble locating the surprisingly funky groove on this sinister tune. Only the finale, featuring all four singers, felt a little awkward. Walker’s enduring songs of loneliness aren’t suited for super groups. + + + + + Thanks to ElsonRoa for sharing the BBC broadcast on the net. Picture by Mark Allan/BBC (modified here) - Thanks!
