But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery.”

There are many legends about Saint Valentine. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, re- alizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. FRiEnDz the teenz magazine l February 2009 l Valentine’s Special Edition Inspiration According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a let- ter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expres- sion that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popu- lar saints in England and France. Any advice for teens: Teens should find out the real purpose of their lives, not be blinded by the fake and artificial western culture that dazzles but is rotten to the core and use their time and energy to work towards the purpose they were created for and by God, and make this world a better place.

A few words for their PARENTS : Parents should understand and realise their role and purpose as individual beings and then as parents. They should draw a fine line between disci- pline and freedom, and not burden their kids with expectations but rather encourage them with optimism. Dairy of a Teen: My Agony by Madhavi Chopra t was a really bad day for me. I was unhappy, disappointed, dis- Iheartened, and distraught. I lost the Inter House Debate, had a fight with my friend, was thrown out of the singing competition, and had an argument with the teacher. To sum it up, it was a real disaster for me. I felt as if it’s the end of the world. Yet, I had this pinching feeling. Even when I felt defeated, I was struggling within. There was a tempest, a turmoil going inside my heart. I believed that it was the end, and still I felt it wasn’t. A storm of conflicting emotions was going on within my achy heart. I felt a tremor, a gush of current inside my body. I sobbed for a min- ute, but could not do that again. I wondered: if I cry, I’d be giving my remote control into everybody’s hand, everyone, who hurt me. And I’ll surely never want to face such a situation. I’d hate to be controlled by people or influences that are responsible for my unhappiness, and disap- pointment. I surely can’t do that. Then what? What is it actually that I should do? I know I have a choice, the power to be in their control or mine. They wanted me to be unhappy, that’s why they did nasty things to me. In this way, they wanted to establish control over me. But I don’t want that. I am well acquainted with the fact that no one can change me but myself. I will be hopeful, optimistic, and determined to start it all over. I know that there will be even worse things that’ll come my way. I will be strong, I don’t have to; I will. FRiEnDz the teenz magazine l February 2009 l Valentine’s Special Edition Diary of a Teen I will manage my situations; respond to them intelligently and smartly. I will be strong and bold while dealing with them. It’s not the end of the world. Everyday brings with it a new chapter, a new experience, a new chapter. I should have the faith, the hope, and the fortitude. It’s my life, my decisions, my future, my experiences, my actions, and my time. Life comes with its dose of sweet and bitter expe- riences but every experience gives me a new lesson to learn and a pathway to follow. Subsequently, I learn to be more mature in dealing with situations. Therefore, I have to be wise and positive. I’m not a child now. I can be responsible for myself. I can be more optimistic, hopeful, cheerful, positive, sanguine, and affirmative. I can’t change the past. So why should I lament about it? Why should I even think about it? I have many positive things com- ing my way. I’m learning, I’m progressing, and I’m growing. I should leave my agony behind and look forward to a bright future and gear up to fight with all my problems and emerge victorious. It’s only then that I overcome my sorrow, agony, and grief and become wise, and strong. Now I’ve got the answer to my agony, and I’ve also learnt how to get over it! Due to unexpected weather, 1 million people are without electricity from last 30 hours, Schools, Colleges, Shops, are hibernated and there is no cell phone network. United States is mostly dependent of electric- ity, and these crises made a common man deprived of heat, hot water, communication, and food.

by Sourabh Garg FRiEnDz the teenz magazine l February 2009 l Valentine’s Special Edition Diary of a Teen I’ve learnt to be optimistic and I am actually enjoying this weather. Yesterday, when I opened the big window in my room, for a moment I thought I was dreaming. I was actu- ally feeling like I found the door to another world (Movie: Narnia). Ev- erything was covered with ice; there was a 5 mm shield of ice on every little branch of tree and lots of icicles. Every little thing was covered in Ice, bicycles, cars, even my little thermom- eter which I put outside my window to check the temperature outside before getting dressed, it was a warning that I need to dress re- ally warm. I went out and I no- ticed that branches of trees were falling down like the leaves fall in autumn season. That was pretty scary and above that the power went out everywhere. No traffic lights, no heat in rooms, no hot water to shower, no cell phone service, no internet, nothing except the awesome view outside. College declared holidays soon and we got instruction to go home as the weather report said the weather would be worse. I live in other part of the world, so did some other stu- dents. We are staying in a building which they’re operating on generator and oh yeah, we’re having fun, don’t ask how. FRiEnDz the teenz magazine l February 2009 l Valentine’s Special Edition Moviez Revolutionary Road (15) **** Plot In 1955, young-marries the Wheel- ers, Frank (DiCaprio) and April (Wins- let), settle into stultifying suburbia but dream of reclaiming lives as free spir- its. However, neighbours react to their getaway plan as a threat to world order. Will they break away or apart? Verdict handsomely done and beauti- fully acted, just slightly wanting in a screenplay that leaves questions un- answered about what’s behind these unhappy people. And it’s soo de- pressing so be ware!!

Lakeview Terrace (15) **** Plot Interracial couple Chris (Patrick Wilson) and Lisa (Kerry Washington) buy a home in upscale LA and earn the disapproval of Abel Turner (Samuel L. Jackson), the widowed black beat cop next door, who has strict ‘rules’ about things — and ways to enforce them. Review Given that his last film as director was the ill-advised and best-forgotten one-star re- make of The Wicker Man, a Neil LaBute Care Bears movie would be hailed a return to form — but Lakeview Terrace is a canny, effective mix of personal concerns with com- mercial storytelling. Verdict As a thriller it’s solid three-star tension. As a Samuel L. Jackson showcase it proves a man can only coast through so many motherf**kin’ or milquetoastin’ turns before hav- ing to display his full and overpowering talent. Should be easy — un- til Frank falls for the girl. Review There hasn't been much so far, in his short acting career, that has thwarted Jason Statham.
