Stan Wawrinka (3 singles) and Leander Paes (6 doubles) have won more Chennai titles than any other players in history. Wawrinka returns as the No. 1 seed in singles, while Paes and Marcel Granollers are the No. 2 seeds in doubles. Among the players challenging Wawrinka this week are Kevin Anderson and Benoit Paire. The second-seeded Anderson broke into the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Oct. 12 after reaching the US Open quarter-finals. Paire, too, enjoyed a successful US Open campaign. He advanced to the fourth round in New York City and arrives in Chennai at a career-high No. 19. Paire and Wawrinka, the 2013 Chennai doubles champions, are playing with different partners in 2016: Paire with Austin Krajicek and Wawrinka with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Mahesh Bhupathi, a five-time champion with Paes, is teaming with first-time partner Gilles Muller. Bhupathi and Paes, who teamed at the inaugural event in 1996, are both playing doubles in Chennai for the 16th time. DAY 1 PREVIEW: Three singles and two doubles matches comprise Monday’s order of play at the Aircel Chennai Open. Spain and Croatia go head-to-head twice on Stadium Court as Nicolas Almagro meets qualifier Ante Pavic, then Marcel Granollers faces No. 8 seed Borna Coric. The 19-year-old Coric led all teenagers with 26 wins on the ATP World Tour in 2015. In the other singles match on Monday’s schedule, John Millman of Australia takes on Evgeny Dosnkoy of Russia.     Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The 2019 WTA doubles winners – Lucie Hradecka and Andreja Klepac – are joined by the ATP Tour champions – Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek – to headline the early entries. Other notable entries on the women’s side include the teenage pairing of Cincinnati’s 18-year-old Caty McNally and 16-year-old Coco Gauff. Dubbed “McCoco,” the duo won a pair of WTA titles in 2019 – at Washington, D.C. and Luxembourg – and reached the US Open Round of 16. Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, who finished 2019 atop the WTA Porsche Race to Shenzen as the season’s No. 1 team, are also in the field. Reigning Australian Open singles champion Sofia Kenin, a 21-year- old American, has entered with former Western & Southern Open singles and doubles winner Victoria Azarenka. The top two teams in the ATP Tour doubles race are entered in the men’s draw. The No. 1 team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is returning after reaching two straight Western & Southern Open finals.     SPORTS INDIA AND WORLD World Cup Cricket History The idea of organising a World Cup of cricket was mooted and agreed to in principle in 1971 when such a proposal was discussed at a meeting of the International Cricket Conference in London. However, due to various commitments the tournaments could not be staged until 1975 when the original plan of a South African team's visit to England fell through following opposition to the country's racial policy. England's Prudential Assurance Company came forward with sponsorship and for three consecutive years - 1975, 1979 and 1983, the one-day limited overs cricket tournament was held in England. It became famous as the Prudential Cup. In the first two tournaments, apart from the six full members of the International Cricket Conference (England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan), Sri Lanka, before being elevated to Test status in 1981, had joined East Africa in 1975 and Canada in 1979 (two top teams among the associate members) to complete the groups in the tournaments proper. The West Indies, under Clive Lloyd, not only won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 but in true Calypso style they produced sparkling cricket and confirmed their unassailable supremacy in this game. India broke the West Indian stranglehold in 1983 to open a new chapter in the brief annals of this prestigious tournament.     GAME, SET, WATCHED: GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE IN PROFESSIONAL TENNIS By Marie-Pier Guay A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2013 Copyright © Marie-Pier Guay, 2013 Abstract Contrary to many major sporting leagues such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, or the Olympic Games as a whole, the professional tennis industry has not been individually scrutinized in terms of governance, social control, and surveillance practices. This thesis presents an in-depth account of the major governing bodies of the professional tennis circuit with the aim of examining how they govern, control, constrain, and practice surveillance on tennis athletes and their bodies. Foucault’s major theoretical concepts of disciplinary power, governmentality, and bio-power are found relevant today and can be enhanced by Rose’s ethico-politics model and Haggerty and Ericson’s surveillant assemblage. However, it is also shown how Foucault, Rose, and Haggerty and Ericson’s different accounts of “modes of governing” perpetuate sociological predicaments of professional tennis players within late capitalism. These modes of surveillance are founded on a meritocracy based on the ATP and WTA rankings systems. A player’s ranking affects how he or she is governed, surveilled, controlled, and even punished. Despite ostensibly promoting tennis athletes’ health protection and wellbeing, the systems of surveillance, governance, and control rely on a biased and capitalistically-driven meritocracy that actually jeopardizes athletes’ health and contributes to social class divisions, socio- economic inequalities, gender discrimination, and media pressure.
