Recap: No. 1 see Virginia barely escaped an upset today by No. 8 seed UCLA, but the Cavaliers came out on top, 4-3. Virginia, who is 9-0 this season, saw three singles matches go to the third set, before they pulled out the win to advance to the semifinals. The Bruins drew blood first, as they won the doubles point. Virginia’s Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, beat Nick Meister and Harel Srugo 8-5, but UCLA came back with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to grab the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. The match saw three different lead changes before it was all over. Virginia’s Dominic Inglot, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles, tied it up at 1-1 with his win at No. 2; Sanam Singh made it 2-1 Virginia when he beat Mike Look 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. UCLA’s Jeremy Drean tied it up at 2-2 when he beat Houston Barrick at No. 5, 7-5, 6-4. The Bruins took a 3-2 lead when Holden Seguso upset nationally ranked singles player No. 12 Treat Huey in the No. 3 singles spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. But Ted Angelinos kept the Cavaliers in the match, as his win at No. 6 singles tied it up at 3-3. The whole match came down to No. 1 singles, where currently unranked Harel Srugo almost beat defending NCAA champion and top seed Devvarman. Srugo took the first set 7-6(5), but Devvarman came back in the second set to win 6-2, and force a third set. With the match on the line, and over 200 fans crowded into Nordstrom Center to see the conclusion of the match, Devvarman and Srugo both stayed cool under pressure. The third set was close throughout, as each player was winning on serve. It wasn’t until the set was tied up at 4-4 that Devvarman was able to break Srugo, and clinch the match with a 6-4 win in the third. With Devvarman’s win, the Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals, 4-3. They will face off against No. 5 seed Mississippi Sunday at 11 a.m. The Rebels beat Oklahoma State 4-0 in an earlier match to advance to the semifinals for fifth time in school history. This isn’t the first time Virginia and Ole Miss have faced off in the semis of this event: in 2005, a No. 6 seeded Mississippi team was upset by an unseeded Virginia team in the semifinals at this tournament, 4-1. The two teams will face off Sunday at 11 a.m. at Nordstrom Tennis Center.
