Kandidatuppsats i Kyrko-och Missionsstudier 15 hp Gabriella Enblom Examinator: Mikael Hallenius Handledare: Göran Sahlberg Examinationsdatum: 2014-05-28 Abstract Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to give a deeper perspective in the sacrament of confession. My study is based on material concerning different rites used by The Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, The Baptist Union of Sweden and United Methodist Church of Sweden. These three denominations does no longer exist, instead they have become one. The international name of the new denomination is Uniting Church in Sweden. My work is a study of how these three denominations have related to the sacrament of confession and if there are differences among the denominations as well as between the three. My reason for doing so is to find out how confession can be practised in the new Uniting Church in Sweden (in Swedish, Equmeniakyrkan). I have chosen to see this paper as three converging journeys where history is important to grow a better understanding of these different denominations. Therefor I start off with a short background of each denomination and also a short description of the sacrament of confession. I have analyzed the material with means of a matrix of concepts related to the sacrament of confession. I have conducted my research by looking for these concepts and then looked for changes over time. I have also asked questions about the recipients, if certain bible verses have been used to explain actions and if there is a legal dimension. Every denominations documents have been analyzed seperately and finally analyzed together in terms of similarities and contrasts. The question regarding recipients is analyzed both in the documents foreword and in context of articles in denominational newspapers. The wish to reach out to every member of the congregations isn't always sucessful. In my discussion I ask if the sacrament of confession has a place in the new Uniting Church in Sweden and my belief is that it has a place but not necessarily in the same way as before. I vissa sammanhang har människor jag mött varit mycket motvilliga till användandet av bikten. Det har handlat främst om en föreställning att prästen är den som förlåter synderna och inte Gud. En annan föreställning har varit att friheten i Kristus gör att var och en kan nalkas Gud själv och därför inte behöver ha en präst som medlare mellan sig och Gud. Själv har jag aldrig riktigt tagit ställning och funderade länge över hur jag skulle kunna fördjupa mina kunskaper i ämnet. Det som nu föreligger är en uppsats om bekännelsepraktik gällande bikt där jag valt att inrikta mig på det nya samfundet Equmeniakyrkan. Equmeniakyrkan har bildats genom att tre samfund, Svenska Missionsförbundet, Svenska Baptistsamfundet och Metodistkyrkan i Sverige, beslutat att förenas till ett gemensamt samfund. På så sätt är denna uppsats tre olika resor genom tre samfunds styrdokument som slutligen närmar sig den plats där en ny resa kan påbörjas, nämligen Equmeniakyrkans resa mot framtiden. 1.2 Metod Jag kommer att genomföra en linjär undersökning där jag ställer varje samfunds styrdokument för sig och undersöker hur dessa dokument har förändrats under tid. Utifrån resemetaforen skulle man kunna säga att jag kommer att undersöka varje samfunds resa separat. Här saknas endast två källor som vid tillfället för uppsatsen inte har kunnat frambringas. Det är Svenska Missionsförbundets råd från 1893 och Metodistkyrkans handbok från 1917. Svenska Missionsförbundet bytte 2003 namn till Svenska Missionskyrkan men för att förenkla för läsaren kommer jag i denna uppsats endast använda mig av benämningen Svenska Missionsförbundet med undantag av det styrdokument som utgavs 2003 och då har benämningen Svenska Missionskyrkan i styrdokumentets titel. 3 Kapitel 1: Inledning 1.2.1 Insamlingsmetod I styrdokumenten har jag valt att fokusera på vissa delar av materialet. För det första har jag valt att studera alla förord för att se till vilka dokumenten riktat sig. För det andra har jag valt att plocka bort vissa ritualer som inte känns aktuella för mitt arbete. Detta är till exempel dop, vigsel och begravning. Jag använder mig sedan av en deduktiv metod för att generera data genom att skapa en tabell där vissa ord är ställda mot förekomsten av dem på skilda ställen i styrdokumenten. Datan tolkas sedan med hjälp av en induktiv metod. (Tabellen finns i sin helhet under appendix ) Orden har jag valt utifrån förekomst i allmän litteratur i ämnet och innan jag analyserat mina primärkällor. Dessutom har jag valt att inte helt låsa mig vid dessa ord utan varit öppen för vidare beskrivningar. 1.2.2 Analysmetod På så vis använder jag mig av en kvalitativ innehållsanalytisk metod. Med hjälp av detta kan jag sedan se om placeringen av orden förändras under tid samt om förekomsten förändras. En kvantitativ innehållsanalys

    Baptists Churches in Europe: The Creation of a Community [SLIDE 1] I want to trace some themes that I see as I look at the development of Baptist life in Europe – in mainland Europe. I will give some examples under each of these themes. So this is different from the geographical arrangement of my book, Communities of Conviction . The nineteenth century saw remarkable Baptist advance in mainland Europe, the leading figure in this advance being Johann Oncken (1800-1884), [SLIDE 2] an outstandingly gifted pastor in Hamburg who has been seen as the father of continental Baptists. One of Oncken’s most famous statements, which helped to shape German and European Baptist life, was that ‘we consider every member a missionary’, and he also viewed every church as a mission society. Prior to 1834, the year in which Oncken was baptised, organised Baptist life was virtually non-existent on the continent of Europe, whereas by 1900 there were about 220,000 members in Baptist churches and many more attending those churches. I want to bring in other strands of European Baptist life as well as the German Baptist story to illustrate my points about Baptist developments. I will not touch on the Italian story, as that is being covered, but I see in the Italian story many of the same developments. 1. Baptists drew from existing movements of spiritual renewal This means that there was a strong indigenous element in Baptist life. Baptist churches in mainland Europe are not to be seen as simply an import from outside. The story of Baptist beginnings in France provides an example of how an existing spiritual impetus prepared the way for Baptist life.

    CHURCH HISTORY LITERACY Lesson 23 Baptist History – Part 1 By Mark Lanier INTRODUCTION Ever heard of the Southern Baptist Convention? Of course! It’s the United States’ second largest Christian denomination (second to the Roman Catholic Church). How about the National Baptist Convention, USA or the Baptist Association of America? The American Baptist Churches USA? The American Baptist Association (Landmark Baptists)? Maybe the Baptist Union of Great Britain or the Baptist Union of Sweden? There is the Association of Regular Baptist Churches in Canada (but there is no Association of Irregular Baptist Churches!) as well as the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptist Churches. In fact, there are well over 50 separate groups of Baptist Churches in the United States alone. One of every five people in the United States is estimated to attend a Baptist Church or affiliate him/herself as a “Baptist.”1 Consider the diversity of the famous people who are Baptist. We have Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Harry Truman, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, and Vice President Al Gore. We have the world famous athletes Jim Brown and George Foreman. Hollywood has seen many Baptists including Lucille Ball and Kevin Costner. As for business, James Cash Penney (yes, we know him by his initials, “J. C. Penney”) and J. L. Kraft of macaroni and cheese fame were Baptists. How about some more historical Baptists of note like John Bunyan or Charles Spurgeon? Also, those greats of the 20th century including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Billy Graham (who extends into the 21st century!)? Now, one may fairly ask, “But how could all those people be the same religion?” One might also wonder why there are so many different “Baptist” groups? The answers to those questions are hopefully contained in today’s lessons.

    The Pillars of Swedish Heritage in Oregon—The Churches The background… The English Christian writer C.S. Lewis wrote this very beautiful , positive and enlightened statement about Christianity: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else”. This beautiful and hopeful Christian message stands, in many ways, in stark contrast to the immigrants situation in Sweden, in the beginning of the great emigration wave that started in late 1800, where it was illegal to engage in any private religious study outside of the State Church sponsorship. The ministers (prästerna) of the Church of Sweden were civil servants. Besides their religious Difficult Goodbye duties these ministers (prästerna) kept the citizenship and tax records, and functioned as a local representative of government and “upper classes” power that was often used for their purposes. This state system was prone to abuse and stagnation and many Swedes, both clergy and laity, sought to reform and renew the church. This was the religious background the Swedish immigrants had when they came to America. They were officially Lutherans, but many were unhappy with the Farewell to Sweden State Church Christianity in Sweden and sought different forms of religious in Gothenburg expressions were they could find happiness in their faith. Some found that other forms of Protestantism were more to their liking, and they formed Swedish Baptist and Swedish Methodist groups, which in turn exported these movements back to Sweden. The Revd Canon Dr. Leslie Nathaniel is Chaplain of the Anglican Church of St Thomas Becket, Hamburg. Born in South India, he worked with the Archbishop of Canterbury from 2009-2016, initially as the Deputy Secretary for Ecumenical Affairs and European Secretary for the Church of England and later as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s International Ecumenical Secretary. He is the Moderator of the Assembly Planning Committee of the Novi Sad CEC Assembly and was the Moderator of the CEC Assembly Planning Committee in Budapest.

It is our conviction that churches today should actively participate in shaping Eu- rope and European society. The Church and Society Commis- sion does this by encouraging a Christian contribution to the political, social and economic life of the continent. Our witness in Europe is also expressed by engaging mem- ber churches in acting together for the common good in Eu- rope and by fostering greater ecumenical dialogue, co-opera- tion and fellowship among member churches of CEC. We are grateful for the support and the encouragement we constantly receive from our member churches and for their extensive co- operation. These are the messages we want to send out with this an- nual report, as well as giving an account of our activities in 2004. The Church and Society Commission is a strong partner of the European Institutions. In co-operation with these institutions and other partners, including non-Christian religious commu- nities and NGOs, the CSC aims at promoting and advocating a Europe of solidarity, reconciliation and human dignity.
