Dezember 2014 Band 16, Heft 2 S. 155-174 Untersuchungsergebnisse zur Schmetterlingsfauna des NSG „Zarth“ bei Treuenbrietzen Lars Kühne & Erik Haase Summary Contribution on the Lepidoptera of the “Zarth”, natural resort near Treuenbrietzen The lepidopterian investigation of the nature reserve Zarth near Treuenbrietzen resulted in 427 spe- cies of macrolepidoptera, within 64 endangered species according to the red data list of the district Brandenburg (Germany). Most of the recorded species settled in the investigated area. Some more specialized species were expected but could not record. The reasons will discuse.

Insects feeding on the foliage of oak were studied on a mountain where species of Mediterranean deciduous and evergreen oak coexist. There were 58 insect species (54 Lepidoptera, 1 Coleopteran and 3 Hymenoptera) belonging to twenty families in the assemblage feeding on eight species of Quercus, two of which are introduced from nearby regions. The overlap in occurrence in time and of feeding niches of the insects feeding on the foliage of the different species of oak was determined using the: (a) Poole- Rathcke method, which tests phenological overlap and (b) Petraitis method, which tests niche overlap. This indicated that insect families partition seasonal time in a random and the entire assemblage in a regular way. All groups of insects partitioned season ran- domly except for the pairs of monophagous-oligophagous and Palearctic-Eurosiberian species, which partition season regularly. Oak folivorous insects correctly perceive the three subgenera of oaks with the exception of the planted Q. robur pedunculiflora. The folivorous insects recorded on the Mediterranean evergreen oaks (subgenus Sclerophyllodrys) differ from those on the other two sub- genera (Quercus and Cerris) and co-occurring deciduous trees.

Mai 2007 Formular Nr.: A.04 2 Early stages and feeding ecology of loopers (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in a south Ecuadorian montane rainforest Abstract During four months of field surveys at the Reserva Biológica San Francisco in the south Ecuadorian Andes, caterpillars of 64 Geometridae species were collected in a montane rainforest between 1800 and 2800m altitude and reared to adulthood. The resulting data on host plant affiliations of these species is listed and compared with published literature records on species and genus level. Data on larval and pupal morphology is presented, together with data on rearing success and on the proportion of parasitoid infestation. Characteristic features of larval morphology and behaviour are described. For 56 species these are the first records ever to be assembled of their early stages, and for another 5 species the data significantly extend known host plant ranges. Most larvae were collected on woody plants (64% of species). The most important host plant families were Melastomataceae (12 species recorded) followed by Asteraceae and Piperaceae (eight species each), and Dennstaedtiaceae (seven species). Unusual host plant affiliations recorded during this study were a quite high number of seven (11%) fern feeding species (mainly on Dennstaedtiaceae) and 3 (5%) lichen feeding species. The genus Eois was confirmed as being bound to larval host plants in the genus Piper.

Since 1989, the author has investigated the Lepidoptera fauna using various methods of observation. A total of 437 species were registered, including 65 red list species. Particularly note- worthy are the evidence of Acronicta menyanthidis (ESPER, 1789) and Actebia praecox (LINNAEUS, 1758) (category 1) and Acanthopsyche atra (LINNAEUS, 1767), Boloria dia (LINNAEUS, 1767), Coe- nonympha arcania (LINNAEUS, 1761), Aporophila nigra (HAWORTH, 1809), Luperina nickerlii (FREYER, 1845), Archanara dissoluta (TREITSCHKE, 1825), Lycophotia molothina (ESPER, 1789), Xestia castanea (ESPER, 1789), Xestia agathina (DUPONCHEL, 1827), Protolampra sobrina (DU- PONCHEL, 1843), Dicallomera fascelina (LINNAEUS, 1758) and Eilema sororcula (HUFNAGEL, 1766) (category 2). Furthermore, the occurrence of another tyrphobiont and endangered Buckleria paludum (ZELLER, 1839), characteristic of the oligotrophic peat bog formation is reported. The re- cords of 95 species of the area, including all types of red list, are discussed and brought into the spatial connection to the Nature Park Schlaubetal and the country Brandenburg. In detail, the area extensions of Pennithera firmata (HÜBNER, 1822) in Brandenburg to the south and Noctua inter- jecta HÜBNER, 1803 in Slovakia to the east are discussed, which is the first record for Slovakia.

Although such faunistic studies were conducted extensively in the region during the first decade of the early 20th century, there are a few new taxa, taxonomic revisions, misidentifications, and misspellings, which should be documented. We examined 1,276 species in 652 genera, 59 subfamilies, and 15 families. We propose 4 new combinations, namely Arichanna refracta Inoue, 1978 stat. nov.; Psyra matsumurai Bastelberger, 1909 stat. nov.; Olene baibarana (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.; and Cerynia usuguronis (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.. The noctuid Blepharita alpestris Chang, 1991 is regarded as a junior synonym of Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (syn. nov.). The geometrids Palaseomystis falcataria (Moore, 1867 [1868]), Venusia megaspilata (Warren, 1895), and Gandaritis whitelyi (Butler, 1878) and the erebid Ericeia elongata Prout, 1929 are newly recorded in the fauna of Taiwan.

  • Impacts of Climate Warming on Range Shifts With
IMPACTS OF CLIMATE WARMING ON RANGE SHIFTS WITH EMPHASIS ON TROPICAL MOUNTAINS Thesis submitted by I CHING CHEN For examination for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Biology January 2011 ABSTRACT Climate warming induced range shifts are evident globally for a wide range of taxonomic groups. However, whether such responses have taken place in tropical insect species is unclear. I provided the first such evidence that tropical insects have moved uphill over four decades of climate warming. I repeated a historical moth transect on Mount Kinabalu in Borneo in 2007, 42-years after the original survey in 1965. I duplicated the 1965 sampling strategy in 2007, and excluded sites where habitat changes were evident. I estimated that the average elevation of 102 montane moth species, in the family Geometridae, increased by a mean of 67 m. A sub-group of species retreated their upper boundaries, which may be associated with cloud cover changes and the presence of geological / vegetation transitions. Without these constraints, most species expanded their upper boundaries upwards (by an average of 152 m) more than they retreated at their lower boundaries (77 m), indicating that different ecological mechanisms may predominate in leading and trailing edge populations. Declines of local endemic species, ecological barriers constraining uphill movements, disappearing climate types and a decreasing area of land at higher elevations are the major concerns for conservation. Research of biodiversity risk under warming is urgently required in Southeast Asia. I conducted a meta-analysis of range shifts representing ~1700 species worldwide. The average rate of elevational range shift was 12.2 m/decade uphill, and latitudinal shifts averaged 17.6 km/decade poleward.

Our data show that monoculture has a short-term impact on overall diversity and richness of species but with a relative resilience capacity of the forest ecosystem. More precisely, real impacts are visible on dynamics and abundances of certain species, depending on the vertical distribution of the biota and on the composition of soil and forest floor.
