I’ll be spending all my time sides of the highway where the steep banks had been hanninn baskets and some gardeners use them a lot for looking out the window!!

the government was spending maney to paint the roadsides so the construction scars wouldn’t show! Here in the Lower Mainland they have to be planted but I can recall the wild lupins growing so tall and thick along the Cariboo Highway between Quesnel and Prince George that my grandchildren sat down in them and you could scarcely see their heads above the blossoms. In fact, the Australian exchange student who went to’ Prince George with me said she had to have a picture of them growing wild as her mother would never believe it if she didn’t have a picture to prove it! She said her mother had spent years trying to grow lupins in their home in Newcastle but the temperature was much too

high for them to grow. 3- . ,. I also noticed some brier roses on the rocks along the highway as well as some of the beautiful orange honeysuckle. There are foxgloves in the clear spots and while the foliage is rank the tall spires of bell-shaped blooms come in many colors, all spotted with a contrasting color. We came home through West Vancouver and the gardens there are a delight, The rhododendrons and azaleas are almost over but the roses are starting to bloom and there they were in many colors and shades. Climbers rioted over walls in every shade from white to nink. through oranne and gold to scarlet and crimson. There are many kinds of climbing roses from the hybrid teas to the floribundas and there are hedge roses as well as the specially grown hybrid teas in all their glorious colors. ’ Surely roses must be one of the most beautiful flowers and they are so easy to grow. I notice that mine are all in bud and should soon be a mass of blooms, From the pale pink Van Fleet to the gorgeous crimson Charlotte Armstrong they make a display which can’t be equalled. Noticed too that the honeysuckle is almost ready to bloom. The hummingbirds love these and maybe they’ll little easy on the bird feeder if the honeysuckle vines bear a lot of flowers. Got all the hanging baskets planted last weekend and they are now up and being urged to grow so they will make a beautiful display as soon as they spread out a bit. I tried to get some black-eyed Susan vines to put to pot. Two years ago I got a pot filled with them in a little nursery in Alberta just east of the B.C. border and brought it home with me. It bloomed all summer orange, yellow and creamy lemon blossoms, all with a dark centre and trailed down over the edges. Beth suggested trying to grow some of the beautitul blue morning glory, saying she had tremendous success with it at one of her homes in Victoria but I have tried the Heavenly Blue and it never amounted to anything. But I do remember that I sent some seeds down to her in Columbia and she grew it in pots on her patio.
