But the 19 only deception here is in the Complaint. Fox’s opinion hosts have never described the Coronavirus 20 as a “hoax” or a “conspiracy,” but instead used those terms to comment on efforts to exploit the 21 pandemic for political points. Regardless, the claims here are frivolous because the statements at 22 issue are core political speech on matters of public concern. The First Amendment does not permit 23 censoring this type of speech based on the theory that it is “false” or “outrageous.” Nor does the law 24 of the State of Washington. The Disability Drive by Anna Mollow A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Kent Puckett, Chair Professor Celeste G. Langan Professor Melinda Y. Chen Spring 2015 The Disability Drive © Anna Mollow, 2015. 1 Abstract The Disability Drive by Anna Mollow Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California Berkeley Professor Kent Puckett, Chair This dissertation argues that the psychic force that Freud named “the death drive” would more precisely be termed “the disability drive.” Freud‟s concept of the death drive emerged from his efforts to account for feelings, desires, and actions that seemed not to accord with rational self- interest or the desire for pleasure. Positing that human subjectivity was intrinsically divided against itself, Freud suggested that the ego‟s instincts for pleasure and survival were undermined by a competing component of mental life, which he called the death drive. But the death drive does not primarily refer to biological death, and the term has consequently provoked confusion. By distancing Freud‟s theory from physical death and highlighting its imbrication with disability, I revise this important psychoanalytic concept and reveal its utility to disability studies. While Freud envisaged a human subject that is drawn, despite itself, toward something like death, I propose that this “something” can productively be understood as disability. In addition, I contend that our culture‟s repression of the disability drive, and its resultant projection of the drive onto stigmatized minorities, is a root cause of multiple forms of oppression.

  • Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2019 the President's News
Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2019 The President's News Conference With President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey November 13, 2019 President Trump. Thank you very much, everybody. Please. I want to begin by welcoming the First Lady with us today, and the First Lady of Turkey. Thank you very much for being here. This is a great honor to have you. And we had a wonderful and a very productive meeting. And before we start, I would like to thank President Erdogan for releasing detainee Serkan Golge, who was in detention—in different forms of detention. And I appreciate that very much. That was a very nice tribute. And he'll be coming back at some point in the not-too-distant future. So that's very good news for the United States and also very good news for Turkey. Turkey, as everyone knows, is a great NATO ally and a strategic partner of the United States around the world. Our economic relationship has tremendous potential and continues to expand and to grow. Direct engagement and diplomacy between our nations are essential to ensuring a future of peace and prosperity and promise for our citizens. Over the course of the day, President Erdogan and I had a frank and productive conversation on a range of very important topics. Among those topics we discussed was the situation in Syria. Last month, I sent Vice President Pence; Secretary of State Pompeo is with us; National Security Adviser O'Brien—thank you—to meet with President Erdogan in the hopes of ending all of the hostilities.

  • Of MAGA, Witch Hunt, and Fake News, Which Is the Greatest Stick of the Trump Covfefe?
The Good, The Bad, and The Sticky: Of MAGA, Witch Hunt, and Fake News, which is the greatest Stick of the Trump Covfefe? Author: Dr. Devon Simons Affiliation: The Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, Aberystwyth, Wales. Panel: ‘Stickiness and Silence: Explaining the Failures and Successes of Strategic Narrative’, presented at the International Studies Association Annual Conference in Toronto, Canada, March 23, 2019. Abstract: Building from topics in the authors previous paper, ‘Trump’s Matryoshka Method of Forced Perspective Concerning Russia’, presented for the panel, ‘Re-narrating Conflict: Media, Military and Public Translations of Strategic Narratives’, at ISA 2018; this paper will explore the stickiness of the phrases ‘Make America Great Again’, ‘Witch Hunt’, and ‘Fake News’, by President Trump. This paper will act as preliminary research towards a larger manuscript by the author. Towards that end, this paper will establish and test three discursive hypotheses; with the ultimate goal of narrowing down which hypothesis (a rhetorical narrative of President Trump) is most ripe for further research. By identifying discursive components surrounding certain phrases that have already risen to popularity, and ‘stuck’ within mainstream conversation, this paper seeks to identify how the phrases MAGA, Witch Hunt, and Fake News, may be anticipated to either stick to the Trump Presidency past its tenure, or which have sell-by date upon which they may fall into silence. Introduction Why do some phrases, templates, frames, or narratives, thrive in the digital media ecology when others do not? How do scholars define, measure, and anticipate ‘success’ concerning contemporary communication? With increasingly urgent and erratic discourse being thrown into the chaos of mainstream communication, how can we begin to understand why certain phrases seem to stick? This line of questioning has expanded in recent years, specifically surrounding the effectiveness and accuracy of political posts on social media.
