Corregido 22-V-2017. Aceptado 23-VI-2017. Abstract: Population ecology of Cittarium pica (Gastropoda: Trochidae) of San Andrés Island, International Biosphere Reserve, Seaflower. Cittarium pica is a conspicuous gastropod of the rocky coastlines of the Caribbean. Given its importance in the diet of Caribbean communities, it has been over-exploited, even reaching extinction in some places, and the species has been included in the red lists of marine invertebrates in some countries. Its fishery in San Andres Island-Colombia is artisanal without any regulation, leading to a decrease in its population. Taking into account the socio-economic, cultural and ecological importance of C. pica and its vulnerability to extinction, it is urgent to develop management actions directed to increase the resilience of the species and its sustainability as a fishery resource. To assess the current population state of C. pica from San Andrés Island, we estimated size structure, sex structure, maturation size, and growth parameters, based on length-frequency data analysis. From September to December 2013, and January to March 2014, we randomly collected 458 individuals at eight representative sites of the rocky shores of the island. -

Templin Division of Commercial Fisheries, Alaska Department of Fish & Game, 333 Raspberry Road, Anchorage, AK 99518, USA Grant et al.: Genetics of geoduck clams 2 Abstract: Geoduck clams Panopea generosa have supported commercial fisheries in Alaska for over two decades and subsistence harvests for much longer. Increasing demands for these clams have stimulated interest in enhancing production through hatchery rearing of larvae and out- planting of juveniles. Key components to stock management and supplementation are an understanding of genetic stock structure and the development of genetic guidelines for hatchery culture and out-planting. In this study, we examined genetic variability among geoduck clams from 16 localities in southeastern Alaska and in three samples of hatchery-reared juveniles. A 684 base-pair segment of the mitochondrial (mt) DNA cytochrome oxidase 1 gene produced 168 haplotypes in 1362 clams and showed a significant excess of low-frequency haplotypes overall (Tajima’s DT = -2.63; Fu’s FS = -29.01). Haplotype diversity (h = 0.708) and nucleotide diversity (θπ = 0.0018) were moderate compared to other marine invertebrates. The analysis of molecular variance did not detect heterogeneity among samples (FST = 0.0008, P = 0.623, mean sample size N = 71.7 clams). Microsatellites showed low-frequency null alleles that produced pervasive departures from Hardy-Weinberg genotypic proportions and that distort estimates of genetic diversity. However, estimates of divergence between populations are relatively un affected because the null alleles were more or less evenly distributed among samples. -

The most frequent food item for the snails was dead crabs Cyrtograpsus angulatus Dana, and the snails preferred this item. In the field, most dead crabs (78%) resulted from oystercatcher predation. Field densities of dead crabs were within the 95% confidence limits of the estimated densities produced by oystercatcher foraging activity, suggesting that a large proportion of carrion available for snails is a byproduct of oystercatcher predation. Dead crabs with injuries were more rapidly detected and consumed by snails, probably because injuries produced by oystercatchers increase leakage of body fluids and facilitate penetration of the proboscis of the snails. Our results suggest that oystercatcher predation subsidize this scavenger snail by increasing availability of food, decreasing variability in their provision and facilitating their consumption. -

Furthermore, seed supply for native species FAO Regional Technical Workshop relies, for the most part, on natural collection, subject to 18–21 October 2010 natural population abundance with wide yearly variations. This Kingston, Jamaica situation has led to the current trend of culturing more readily available exotic species, but with a potentially undesirable impact on the natural environment. The centralizing of resources available in the region into a shared facility has been recommended by several expert meetings over the past 20 years. The establishment of a regional hatchery facility, supporting sustainable aquaculture through the seed production of native molluscan species was discussed at the FAO workshop “Regional shellfish hatchery: A feasibility study” held in Kingston, Jamaica, in October 2010, by representatives of Caribbean Governments and experts in the field. Molluscan species are particularly targeted due to their culture potential in terms of known techniques, simple grow-out technology and low impact on surrounding environment. It is proposed that a regional molluscan hatchery would produce seed for sale and distribution to grow-out operations in the region as well as provide technical support for the research on new species. -

Bitasion Les Habitations-Plantations Constituent Le Creuset Historique Et Symbolique Où Fut Fondu L’Alliage Original Que Sont Les Cultures Antillaises
Kelly & Bérard Ouvrage dirigé par Bitasion Les habitations-plantations constituent le creuset historique et symbolique où fut fondu l’alliage original que sont les cultures antillaises. Elles sont le berceau des sociétés créoles contemporaines qui y ont puisé tant leur forte parenté que leur Bitasion - Archéologie des habitations-plantations des Petites Antilles diversité. Leur étude a été précocement le terrain de prédilection des historiens. Les archéologues antillanistes se consacraient alors plus volontiers à l’étude des sociétés précolombiennes. Ainsi, en dehors des travaux pionniers de J. Handler et F. Lange à la Barbade, c’est surtout depuis la fin des années 1980 qu’un véritable développement de l’archéologie des habitations-plantations antillaises a pu être observé. Les questions pouvant être traitées par l’archéologie des habitations-plantations sont extrêmement riches et multiples et ne sauraient être épuisées par la publication d’un unique ouvrage. Les différents chapitres qui composent ce livre dirigé par K. Kelly et B. Bérard n’ont pas vocation à tendre à l’exhaustivité. Ils nous semblent, par contre, être représentatifs, par la variété des questions abordée et la diversité des angles d’approche, de la dynamique actuelle de ce champ de la recherche. Cette diversité est évidemment liée à celle des espaces concernés: les habitations-plantations de cinq îles des Petites Antilles : Antigua, la Guadeloupe, la Dominique, la Martinique et la Barbade sont ici étudiées. Elle est aussi, au sein d’un même espace, due à la cohabitation de différentes pratiques universitaires. Nous espérons que cet ouvrage, tout en diffusant une information jusqu’à présent trop dispersée, sera le point de départ de nouveaux travaux. -

Afonso3, and Rafael Zardoya1 1Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC), Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biologia Evolutiva 2Universidad de Cadiz, Departamento CMIM y Química Inorgánica – Instituto de Biomoléculas (INBIO) 3Universidade do Algarve, Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) Cone snails form one of the most diverse families of marine animals, including more than 900 species classified into almost ninety different (sub)genera. Conids are well known for being active predators on worms, fishes, and even other snails. Cones are venomous gastropods, meaning that they use a sophisticated cocktail of hundreds of toxins, named conotoxins, to subdue their prey. Although this venom has been studied for decades, most of the effort has been focused on Indo-Pacific species. Thus far, Atlantic species have received little attention despite recent radiations have led to a hotspot of diversity in West Africa, with high levels of endemic species. In fact, the Atlantic Chelyconus ermineus is thought to represent an adaptation to piscivory independent from the Indo-Pacific species and is, therefore, key to understanding the basis of this diet specialization. We studied the transcriptomes of the venom gland of three individuals of C. ermineus. The venom repertoire of this species included more than 300 conotoxin precursors, which could be ascribed to 33 known and 22 new (unassigned) protein superfamilies, respectively. Most abundant superfamilies were T, W, O1, M, O2, and Z, accounting for 57% of all detected diversity.
