  • Skating World Mourns Loss of 'Visionary' Billings
Skating world mourns loss of 'visionary' Billings Hamilton, Buttle among those who treasured time working with designer Posted 9/29/16 by Sarah S. Brannen, special to icenetwork Jef Billings, seen here posing with one of his Emmy Award-winning designs, left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating. -Getty Images Designer Jef Billings, who created costumes for skating stars for decades, died Tuesday at the age of 70. Billings was widely regarded as one of the most important designers in figure skating, creating opulent pieces drawn from his experience creating fashion in Hollywood. "His knack was to dive into the character that you were portraying on the ice and really bring out the flavor of that in the costume," said Kristi Yamaguchi, a frequent client of Billings. "Whether it was something comedic and fun, or elegant and glamorous, you put a Jef Billings on and it made you feel special on the ice." Scott Hamilton met Billings in 1984, when Billings showed him some sketches backstage at a tour stop. Hamilton liked his energy and enthusiasm, and the two started working together, forming a partnership that lasted decades. "There was no one like him," Hamilton said. "There are a lot of really talented people out there, but when you look at his technical ability of understanding fabric -- how to cut, how to sew, how to build and create something to make a perfect picture -- he just got it. He wanted women to look gorgeous; he wanted men to look like men. He wanted the skaters to represent whatever the character of the piece was, and he was just brilliant." Billings, who died at his home in Los Angeles on Sept.

Brannen and Drew Meekins, special to icenetwork Starr Andrews dons the earring that Olympic champ Kristi Yamaguchi once wore. Sarah S. Brannen An earring's journey When we talked to Starr Andrews after the juvenile ladies event, we noticed a pretty earring in her left ear, a small gold hoop with a crystal heart dangling from it. We didn't realize we had seen it before: Kristi Yamaguchi wore it as she won her Olympic gold medal in Albertville. It turns out that Tai Babilonia gave the earring to Yamaguchi back in 1992, and she wore it for the entire Olympic competition and for years afterward. "I really wanted to give her something special, something really cool," Babilonia told us. "And I saw her wearing it on the cover of Sports Illustrated." http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2014/01/23/67027190 1/5 6/29/2018 The Inside Edge: Sisterhood of the traveling earring | icenetwork.com: Your home for figure skating and speed skating. "I got it from Tai during a trying time when I competed," Yamaguchi said. "I wore it for good luck, and it symbolized strength and hope for me." Yamaguchi eventually gave the earring to Katia Gordeeva after the death of Gordeeva's husband, Sergei Grinkov, and eventually Gordeeva gave it back to Babilonia.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Frozen in Time The Enduring Legacy of the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating Team by Nikki Nichols Barbara Ann Roles. Barbara Ann Roles (also Barbara Roles Pursley, Barbara Roles Williams), born April 6, 1941 in San Mateo, California) is an American figure skater and skating coach. She is the 1960 Olympic bronze medalist and the 1962 United States Champion. Roles began skating at age 8, after being invited to try figure skating by a friend. [1] She became a student of Nancy Rush, who was her only coach throughout her career. Roles competed in ice dance with Jim Short. The pair placed second on the junior level at the 1958 U. S. National Championships, and passed two of their gold dances. However, Roles gave up ice dance to focus on her singles career. [1] After a successful novice and junior singles career, Roles placed second to Carol Heiss at the U. S. Nationals in 1960, earning a spot on the 1960 Olympic team. She retired after winning the bronze medal at those games. [2] She was asked to come out of retirement after Sabena Flight 548 crashed and killed the entire 1961 US Figure Skating Team. [3] Roles won the gold medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1962. She was the first skater to win U. S. novice, junior and senior titles. Only Kimmie Meissner is the only other skater to do this. [1] She missed the 1963 competitive season, while touring with the Ice Capades. [1] . She came back out of retirement in an attempt to qualify for the 1964 Winter Olympics, but only placed 5th at the national championships and failed to make the team.

Home of Champions Presents the 2007 ADULT TRAINING CAMP June 29 – July 1 starring Nikolai Morozov *plus the largest number of international, World and Olympic skaters ever assembled for this camp including: (Please note: Skater list may be subject to change) Kyoko Ina Naomi Lang Miki Ando Daisuke Takahashi Kristen Fraser & & & John Zimmerman Peter Tchernychev Igor Lukanin AND MORE! Nikolai Morozov, who coaches at the Ice House in Hackensack, NJ, first came to the world’s notice through his work with Tatiana Tarasova and Alexei Yagudin on Yagudin’s famed 2002 Olympic short program, Winter. More successes quickly followed as he guided Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz to their only World ice dancing championship in 2003, while choreographing the programs for many of the sports leading ladies. Then he choreographed the Matrix free skate for Brian Joubert, who became the first Frenchman to win Europeans in decades in 2004. By the 2004 Worlds, he had choreographed the programs for all of the ladies who reached the podium in Dortmund including Shizuka Arakawa, Sasha Cohen, and Michelle Kwan. Although he is most famous for his choreography, the 31 year-old also has a full stable of skaters for whom he is the primary coach. That includes instruction in both dance techniques and jumps up through the quad. One huge advantage for Morozov is his ability to demonstrate any move on the ice, including both the lady’s and the man’s position in ice dancing. That allows him to work with each partner as the other watches to demonstrate the correct positions.
