Lamb, Herb S. Aldwinckle, Roger D. Way, and David E. Terry any other crop in the United States, and there are in- creasing concerns about environment pollution by pesticides. Furthermore, some of the disease-causing organisms have become tolerant to certain fungicides, making chemical control more difficult. Finally, the in- creasing strictness of the standards of the Environmental Protection Agency concerning the deleterious effects of pesticides on humans has increased the probability of los- ing effective fungicides and bactericides for disease con- trol. At first, the objective of this project was resistance to ap- ple scab only, but it soon became clear that when apples were grown without any chemical disease control, the other major diseases (cedar apple rust, fire blight, and mildew) could be more serious. Thus, the objectives were broadened to include resistance to these diseases as well. In 'Liberty,' we have an apple that has a measure of resistance to all four of these diseases. Our experience so far is that it can be grown without any fungicidal sprays. Since it is not resistant to insect, however, spraying or other means of insect control must still be used. 'Liberty' was screened for resistance to scab as a small seedling in a severe test in the greenhouse and was found to be resistant. This test, which was done by the Depart- ment of Plant Pathology, consists of inoculation of very susceptible tissue with a high concentration of scab (conidia) spores under conditions ideal for infection so that resistance can be identified with a high degree of con- fidence. For example, in the city of Québec, the avereage temperature for this month was -18,8EC (-2EF) while the normal avereage is -12,5EC (+9,5EF). This difference is very important when considering the avereage temperature for a complete month. In fact, this is the coldest month ever recorded by the meteorological station which is in operation since 1945 at Québec airport. The previous coldest month, recorded in 1982, was -17,2EC avereage. Important damage to apple trees was also reported in the commercial apple growing region of Rougemont. We can thus consider this last winter as a real test for winter hardiness of plants. I have a small orchard at Petite-Rivière-St-François, 80 km North-East of Québec along the North coast of St-Lawrence River. This is zone 4 in both CDN and USDA maps. Like most other Nafex members who live in the North, I try to grow fruits that, according to the book, should not grow there. Pedigrees of apple (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) cultivars were used to study worldwide genetic diversity among clones used in modern apple breeding. The most frequent founding clones were ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Red Delicious’, ‘Jonathan’, and ‘McIntosh’. Coefficients of coancestry between 50 mainstream cultivars and these clones averaged 0.03, 0.12, 0.07, 0.06, and 0.02, respectively, but they were frequently as high as 0.25 with certain pairings. Among a group of 27 cultivars carrying the Vf gene for scab resistance, coefficients of coancestry with the five founding clones were of the same order. Although few of the cultivars sampled were substantially inbred, inbreeding could reach serious levels in their future offspring if current breeding practices are continued. The status effective number was 8 for the mainstream group and 7 for the Vf-carrier clones. This indicates clearly that apple breeders are operating with a population of greatly reduced genetic diversity. Careful consideration of pedigrees and increased size of the genetic base are needed in future apple breeding strategies. The fungus that causes the disease, Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae, is unusual because it must spend a phase of its life cycle as a parasite on Juniperus species, such as red cedar or ornamental junipers. Cedar-apple rust can be severe on apple. Infections of apple fruit result in lower fruit quality and early fruit drop. Leaf spots may cause early defoliation, especially during dry summers. As the name indicates, the fruit is borne on spurs. Spurs are slow growing leafy shoots and have a mixed terminal bud. A mixed terminal bud will produce shoot and flowers. In apples, spurs develop on two–year old shoots from axillary buds located at the base of each leaf. Axillary buds on a spur can give rise to shoots or new spurs. A branched spur system forms after several years when new spur form on old spurs. Spur–type strains are more dwarfing than the standard stain. When spur and standard strains were compared in Washington rootstock trials, the spurs were 25% smaller than standard stains. Spur–type apples have a growing and fruiting characteristic in which lateral (axillary) buds on two year old wood gives rise to a higher portion of spurs and fewer lateral shoots than occur with standard growth habits. This gives the tree a more open canopy and compact growth habit than standard trees. Research indicates that they have approximately half the canopy volume of standard strains.
