For example, in the city of Québec, the avereage temperature for this month was -18,8EC (-2EF) while the normal avereage is -12,5EC (+9,5EF). This difference is very important when considering the avereage temperature for a complete month. In fact, this is the coldest month ever recorded by the meteorological station which is in operation since 1945 at Québec airport. The previous coldest month, recorded in 1982, was -17,2EC avereage. Important damage to apple trees was also reported in the commercial apple growing region of Rougemont. We can thus consider this last winter as a real test for winter hardiness of plants. I have a small orchard at Petite-Rivière-St-François, 80 km North-East of Québec along the North coast of St-Lawrence River. This is zone 4 in both CDN and USDA maps. Like most other Nafex members who live in the North, I try to grow fruits that, according to the book, should not grow there. After a such cold winter, I find it useful to note which trees and varieties suffered damage or went through easily. 1- Varieties that suffered no or very slight damage. All the apples that have traditionally been planted in the region : Cortland, McIntosh, Lobo, Yellow transparent, Wealthy, Duchess. Pedigrees of apple (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) cultivars were used to study worldwide genetic diversity among clones used in modern apple breeding. The most frequent founding clones were ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Red Delicious’, ‘Jonathan’, and ‘McIntosh’. Coefficients of coancestry between 50 mainstream cultivars and these clones averaged 0.03, 0.12, 0.07, 0.06, and 0.02, respectively, but they were frequently as high as 0.25 with certain pairings. Among a group of 27 cultivars carrying the Vf gene for scab resistance, coefficients of coancestry with the five founding clones were of the same order. Although few of the cultivars sampled were substantially inbred, inbreeding could reach serious levels in their future offspring if current breeding practices are continued. The status effective number was 8 for the mainstream group and 7 for the Vf-carrier clones. This indicates clearly that apple breeders are operating with a population of greatly reduced genetic diversity. Careful consideration of pedigrees and increased size of the genetic base are needed in future apple breeding strategies.     Providing a level of excellence that makes the Rosamond Gifford Zoo 2019 ANNUAL REPORT a national leader in animal care, conservation and visitor experience. 1 A JOINT MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD There is much to celebrate in the Friends 2019 annual report. Last year saw the birth of a baby Asian elephant and two critically endangered Amur leopard cubs. The zoo unveiled several new exhibits and welcomed several new rare and endangered species. Friends of the Zoo and our county partners upgraded and expanded the Helga Beck Asian Elephant Preserve, and construction began on a key Friends project, the Zalie & Bob Linn Amur Leopard Woodland. Some 332,000 people visited the zoo, enhanced by the Friends’ addition of a summer-long Big Bugs! attraction and a new 18-horse carousel. Our education programs involved more than 10,000 participants, including more than 7,500 school-age children. Our volunteers provided educational enrichment to guests, beautified the zoo with lush gardens and joined work projects to improve the facility. Our catering staff executed more than 120 events, from weddings to the Snow Leopard Soirée to Brew at the Zoo. All told, Friends provided more than $175,000 in direct support to the zoo and allocated more than $500,000 for capital improvements to help the zoo meet the “gold standard” for animal care and welfare, conservation education and saving species. We are extremely proud of these accomplishments, and we hope you will enjoy this look back at our achievements and all the people, businesses and community partners that helped make them possible.
