NNAS Lecture 1st February in the Town Close Auditorium, Norwich Castle Museum. Dr Richard Maguire, Senior Lecturer in Public History, School of History, University of East Anglia, on the Cold War Anglia project. Once again the projection equipment let us down so Richard had to begin his lecture without illustrations but gallant efforts by Sophie Cabot eventually enabled the pictures to be shown. His theme was the culture of the Cold War and he gave a brief outline of the early UK weapons programme to combat the threat from Soviet Union bombers and to launch retaliatory attacks. He chose four locations to illustrate its effects on the landscape of East Anglia. (a) RAF Bawburgh nr. Norwich (b) RAF Feltwell (c) RAF Barnham nr. Thetford (d) RAF Orford Ness in Suffolk All of these were highly classified in their time, which means accurate details about them are still sketchy. Bawburgh This was a virgin site. pristine farmland, before it became part of a radar defence network, imposed by Government without being integrated into the local community. It altered centuries of agricultural use and the surrounding landscape. Whereas Bawburgh pre-WWII was in the middle of nowhere now it is adjacent to the A47 and filled in with development. The original station was part of the 1950s Rotor Radar System to modernise the United Kingdom’s radar defences. At one time 40 airforce personnel worked there but little is left except an underground bunker with a bungalow built over the top (a similar example exists at Trimmingham). Feltwell The airfield was part of a network built in the late 1930s with a curved array of hangers, similar in layout to many of the other RAF airfields of the period (for example RAF Marham, RAF Watton and RAF West Raynham). -

remembrance ni Fleet Air Arm pilot from Fermanagh fought with RAF in Battle of Britain Lieutenant Henry William Beggs was one of over 500 personnel killed when a German U- Boat sank HMS Avenger to the north- HMS Avenger with Sea Hurricanes on deck west of Gibraltar in November 1942. Lieutenant Beggs served in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy during World War Two. After flying in the Battle of Britain, he went on to join the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. Born on 6th September 1916, he was the son of John Allen Beggs,MRCVS, and Anne Louise (Nancy) Beggs (née Life stories 3 - WW2 Page !1 ! Allingham) of Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh. He was the husband of Patricia Rosemary Beggs of Chiswick, Middlesex. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force on a short service commission in November 1936. As an Acting Pilot Officer, he completed training and joined RAF 115 Squadron on 4th September 1937. The Royal Air Force terminated his commission on 28th December 1937. In May 1939, Beggs joined the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. On 15th June 1940, he was attached to the Royal Air Force, converted to Hawker Hurricanes, an d served in the Battle of Britain. On 1st July 1940, he joined RAF 151 Squadron from RAF Martlesham Heath, Suffolk. Life stories 3 - WW2 Page !2 Beggs downed a Messerschmitt ME109 of 4/JG 52 over Kent on 14th August 1940. The following day, he received injuries after a Messerschmitt ME109 shot down his Hawker Hurricane P3605 over Dover. After recovering from his injuries, he rejoined the Fleet Air Arm. -

This issue is the first to be produced after the article advertising Washington Times appeared in Aeroplane’s ‘High Society’ and FlyPast’s ‘Ops Board’. The response to these two articles was very encouraging and resulted in 40 new contacts. Following the success of this approach I would strongly recommend those of you who are involved with other societies or projects to also approach Aeroplane and FlyPast and see if they will run similar articles for you. For those who did not see it I have included (with their permission) the High Society article from Aeroplane (see next page). C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself. -

The character area is defined primarily by the distinctive land cover of arable fields interspersed with blocks of mixed plantation woodland and areas of heathland and grassland. It is bounded by the more continuous forest cover of Thetford Forest to the south, by the Wissey Valley to the west and by the Thet Valley to the east, with the elevated plateau landscape marking the northern extent. Key Characteristics • A gently undulating landscape with glacial drift deposits of sand, clay and gravel. Topography ranges from 20 – 55m AOD. • Free draining sandy soils support a functional landscape of arable cultivation and plantation woodland. • Large tracts of heathland and grassland survive within the extensive MOD land holdings at Stanford Training Ground (SSSI (SAC)), in the western half of the character area. • Groundwater dependent meres at East Wretham Heath and the Stanta Training Area are internationally significant – unique hydrogeological features fed by base- rich groundwater with no inflowing or outflowing streams. -

What Did You Do in the Cold War Daddy? By John Crabbe G3WFM It’s sixty years ago, 1950, that I received the dreaded OHMS letter telling me to report to RAF Padgate in Lancashire. In case you are too young to know, all males who reached the tender age of 18 years and provided they hadn’t got flat feet or some other excuse were required to serve King and Country for eighteen months (later two years) called National Service. I had previously joined the ATC (Air Training Corps) and had been interested in aircraft and flying since I had witnessed the actions of the RAF in the Battle of Britain as a boy at school. I was very eager to get in the RAF and as a member of the ATC, it gave me an advantage. So on the morning of call up I together with about 70 other young men, caught a train at Euston Station, with a one-way travel warrant, to Warrington in Lancashire. On arrival there, we were herded into some RAF trucks (garries in RAF slang) for the trip to RAF Padgate about three miles out of town. The first two weeks were fairly easy being fitted out with uniforms etc. The only thing they asked you was your hat size, which seemed to be the standard for every other bit of clothing. I have never worked that one out, but it seemed to be ok provided you were a fairly standard size, which I was, fortunately. But tough on anybody who was tall and thin or short and fat.
