Save Kids’ TV Campaign British children’s television - on the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Five - has been widely acknowledged as amongst the most creative and innovative in the world. But changes in children’s viewing patterns, and the ban on certain types of advertising to children, are putting huge strains on commercial broadcasters. Channel 4 no longer makes children’s programmes and ITV (until recently the UK’s second largest kids’ TV commissioner) has ceased all new children’s production. They are deserting the children’s audience because it doesn’t provide enough revenue. Channel FIVE have cut back their children’s programming too. The international channels - Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network - produce some programming here, but not enough to fill the gap, and much of that has to be international in its focus so that it can be used on their channels in other territories. The recent Ofcom report on the health of children’s broadcasting in the UK has revealed that despite the appearance of enormous choice in children’s viewing, the many channels available offer only a tiny number of programmes produced in the UK with British kids’ interests at their core. The figures are shocking – only 1% of what’s available to our kids is new programming made in the UK. Adrian Henri and the Merseybeat Movement: Performance, Poetry, and Public in the Liverpool Scene of the 1960S
Adrian Henri and the Merseybeat movement: performance, poetry, and public in the Liverpool scene of the 1960s Helen Louise Taylor Royal Holloway, University of London A thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 1 For, and because of, my parents. 2 DECLARATION OF AUTHORSHIP I, Helen Louise Taylor, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: . Date: . 3 THESIS ABSTRACT Adrian Henri and the Merseybeat movement: performance, poetry, and public in the Liverpool scene of the 1960s The thesis focuses on the Merseybeat movement and its manifestations in Liverpool in the 1960s, with particular emphasis on the work of Adrian Henri. The Merseybeat movement – centred upon Adrian Henri, Roger McGough, and Brian Patten – was a site-specific confluence of the alternative avant-garde and the British populist tradition of art, and deserves exploration as both a literary and a cultural phenomenon. The thesis argues that the dismissal of Merseybeat as ‘pop poetry’ has come from using the wrong critical tools: it is better viewed as a ‘total art’ movement, encompassing not only poetry but also visual art, music, comedy, happenings, and other forms of artistic expression. The thesis is primarily concerned with the performative and collaborative aspects of Merseybeat. As well as considering this particular movement in terms of oral performance and audience communication, this research also contributes to our understanding of the dissemination of this poetry – particularly how its audiences experienced live poetry alongside other artforms and media. -

Downloaded from simongarfield.com © Simon Garfield 2005 Ant Always Stands on the Left Ant and Dec are always together on television. And in real life too. The Observer, May 2002 The most striking thing about Ant and Dec is not that you can't tell them apart, but that you can: apart from the light entertainment and children's shows that went before them, and apart from other people who made it famous and rich when they were young. Ant and Dec, both aged 26 (Ant is always on the left in photos), represent a new generation of TV hosts - not comedians (though occasionally they can be funny), not singers (though they used to do that all the time) and not really celebrities (slender tabloid interest, very polite when you meet them, only one uncharacteristic incident at a lap-dancing establishment) - but they can stand in front of a camera and talk to it as if it was a friend they used to know from school. To do this without artifice is a very valuable thing in television. You can twist yourself in knots trying to explain their achievement, but all you need to understand is that they used to climb trees and weren't the sort of people who liked to watch children's television with an educational flavour. Their appeal is embedded in a little-remembered programme, their first, that went out at teatime in 1996. The Ant and Dec Show on Children's BBC featured a novel item called Beat The Barber, a quiz in which young people could win fantastic prizes such as computer consoles. -

What's the Buzz at St Joseph's This Month?
Edition 3 What’s the Buzz at St Joseph’s this month? Welcome to the third edition of The Burgundy Buzz! We are really starting to get the hang of this now! 2018 is well and truly in full swing and we have all been busy bees, hunting for all the news and events so that we can keep you all up-to-date with what’s going on in school and around the world. We hope you enjoy this edition! Safety Internet Day On Tuesday 6th February we learnt all about how to stay safe on the Internet .We had to sign an acceptable user agreement policy. This is a contract to say that we agree to use the internet safe- ly and responsibly and to help make the internet a safe and happy place for everybody. As part of the day, Mrs. Fagan did an assembly and introduced our Big Write task. We had to create leaflets on how to make the internet a happy place for everyone. In Year 6, as part of our discussions in class, we also talked about what to post on the internet . We talked about age restrictions and when we should be able to use social media. The age re- strictions for the next couple of apps are: Age:13 Age: 13 Age:13 Age: 13 Year 4 and 5 Maths challenge club Some of the students from Year 4 and 5 have been selected to join a Maths challenge club. Three of them will be selected to take part in a competition run by the council.
