IVAN KOVALENKO Kovalenko is a painter who graduated from the Lvov Art Institute (1956). He began his ADOLF KONSTANTINOPOLSKY art career as an impressionist painter. In his later works Kovalenko attempts to revive Adolf Konstantinopolsky was a Soviet painter and graphic artist, well-known for his the traits of the Grand Academic Style. He has created a series of canvases dedicated battle scenes. He was the people’s artist of Ukraine (from 1991). to Russian history. Kustodiev The Family, 1905 Oil on canvas 182.5 x 198 cm © Belvedere, Vienna SILVER AGE RUSSIAN ART IN VIENNA AROUND 1900 The Belvedere’s exhibition Silver Age - Russian Art in Vienna around 1900, showing from 27 June to 28 September 2014, explores Russian art and the cultural links between Russia and Austria in the early twentieth century. The term Silver Age refers to the cultural heyday in Russian literature and the fine arts after 1900 and is considered to be the equivalent of the German term Jugendstil or Art Nouveau. Two exhibitions organized by the Vienna Secession in 1901 and 1908 introduced the Viennese public to contemporary Russian art, which was extremely well received by both critics and collectors. While the first exhibition was dedicated to art in Nordic countries and only had one section on Russia, the second was devoted entirely to modern Russian art. It placed an emphasis on established artists from the group World of Art (Mir Iskusstva), as well as exponents of the young association of artists Blue Rose (Golubaya Roza), the last generation of Russian Art Nouveau. At this 1908 exhibition, three paintings were purchased for the Moderne Galerie (today’s Belvedere), including the important portrait of the Polenov Family by Boris M. Kustodiev that had been previously rejected by the conservative Russian art scene. The exhibition Silver Age will showcase Russian artists whose work could have been seen in Vienna over a hundred years ago.

    Russian Auctions in London 27-29 November 2017 RUSSIAN ART + CULTURE Post-Sale Report BY SIMON HEWITT (INTERNATIONAL EDITOR) DIVIDED BY DEINEKA MAC DOUGALL’S OUTGUN SOTHEBY’S IN SOVIET SHOWDOWN THERE WAS AN UNWONTED SURFEIT of Soviet Art during Russian Week – 100 lots of it sprinkled through MacDougall’s five-hour sale, and a whole catalogue of the stuff at Sotheby’s. Alexander Deineka (1888-1965) was the go-to man. Only Christie’s, of the four London firms, weren’t selling him. MacDougall’s and Sotheby’s each had a Deineka touted at around £3m. MacDougall’s sold theirs, Sotheby’s didn’t. Deineka’s most famous work, his 1928 Defence of Petrograd , imbues horizontal figures – painted in an austere black/grey palette – with heroic dynamism. Sotheby’s Deineka had the palette. MacDougall’s had the horizontal heroism – and a buyer. In 1925 Deineka visited the Donbass coalfields of eastern Ukraine. A vast, three-figure canvas entitled At The Mine resulted. Two of the miners wielded pick-axes with revolutionary gusto. The picture was cut up and these figures lost. The third figure, a 5ft 8in Coal Miner mopping his brow rather less heroically, pick-axe at his feet, was found in Deineka’s studio after his death in 1969. It was one of three works consigned to Sotheby’s by the American collector Raymond Johnson, with a whopping estimate of £3.5-4.5 million – the equivalent, for a work whose art historical importance outweighs its visual appeal, of a bottomless pit... into which it sank without a bid.

The two men, both of whom are on horseback, guide their steeds away from the viewer and through an archway created by two fallen pine trees. The men are dwarfed Aby these thin and lofty trees, which cover the hillsides as far as the eye can see. The stillness and calm of the image is emphasised by the cool, overcast conditions in this remote and isolated corner of rural Russia. Vasnetsov’s art frequently depicts similar scenes of dense forest, Noon being one fine example (fig. 1). In a manner comparable to Hunters on Horseback in a Pine Forest, the figures are dwarfed by surrounding trees looming above them. Soft sunlight penetrates the overhead canopy, falling in shafts on the forest floor. Both works focus on the understated beauty of the forest; nature feels tranquil and untouched. They display the same masterful skill, evident in the free, broad brushstrokes and the vivid freshness of the colouring, and the same peaceful mood which is characteristic of so many of Vasnetsov’s landscapes. Following a discussion with the professional community, the development concept for the State Tretyakov Gallery’s has been approved by the Russian Ministry of Culture. The concept was developed by Event Communications together with AEA Consulting, the consulting firms chosen through an international competition 1 process. A renewed museum will be unveiled in 2025, however, the changes will become apparent much earlier: the plan implies a phased implementation. The 'program maximum’ is to become the main museum of Russian art in Russia and the world. “The key starting point is that we are a democratic museum, open to the visitors. It was not easy to formulate this, as there is an understanding of a museum as a sort of an ivory tower with a mission to preserve and research, while there were often no objectives to look outwards. This is a very important thesis that we will base our work on in coming years,” said Zelfira Tregulova, the Director of Tretyakov Gallery. New Buildings at Lavrushinsky Lane The Tretyakov Gallery is planning on moving outwards not only figuratively, but literally. First, the inner yards of Lavrushinsky complex will help that transition as they will be merged with Lavrushinsky Lane itself.
