VOORWOORD De publicatie van politicologische en historische studies over politieke partijen in een jaarboek is een belangrijke taak voor het Documentatiecen- trum Nederlandse Politieke Partijen (DNPP). Het tracht op deze wijze het onderzoek naar partijen te stimuleren. De voornaamste taak van het DNPP is evenwel het verzamelen en ontsluiten van documentatie over de organisatie, opvattingen en activiteiten van alle in de Staten-Generaal vertegenwoordigde politieke partijen. De nadruk valt daarbij op de ontwikkelingen buiten Eerste en Tweede Kamer, omdat de parlementaire handelingen al elders gedocu- menteerd worden. In 1996 kreeg de taakstelling van het DNPP er een nieuwe dimensie bij. Politieke partijen zijn steeds meer gebruik gaan maken van de mogelijkheden die de nieuwe media bieden. De meeste partijen presenteren zichzelf tegen- woordig op Internet. Hier bieden zij onder meer artikelen uit wetenschappe- lijke tijdschriften aan, of brochures en verkiezingsprogramma’s. Het DNPP kon bij deze ontwikkeling niet achterblijven en opende het afgelopen jaar zijn eigen web-site (www.ub.rug.nl/dnpp/). Hierop is een begin gemaakt met een ’electronische bibliotheek’, waarin publicaties van politieke partijen on- line en full-text worden aangeboden. Van deze electronische bibliotheek maken ook de artikelen uit de Jaarboeken van het DNPP zelf deel uit. Verder kan op de DNPP-site de catalogus van het DNPP worden geraadpleegd, en wordt er doorverwezen naar de sites van de politieke partijen en van andere instellingen die zich met politiek bezig houden. Op het nu langs electronische weg gaat of op de oude vertrouwde wijze van druk en papier - politieke partijen zullen zich altijd blijven verstaan met hun leden en kiezers, en met elkaar. Het is aan het DNPP om deze uitingen te documenteren en zo adequaat mogelijk ter beschikking te stellen. Groningen G. Poppens, De VVD in internationaal verband 258 Auteurs 270 1 JAARVERSLAG 1996 DNPP Inleiding Het jaar 1996 stond voor het Documentatiecentrum Nederlandse Politieke Partijen (DNPP) van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen voor een deel in het teken van de automatisering. Zo werd de inrichting van een eigen site van het DNPP op het Internet voorbereid. Hierop wordt onder meer de catalogus van het Documentatiecentrum aangeboden. Verder werden de al eerder begonnen werkzaamheden met betrekking tot de retrospectieve invoer van de catalogus van vóór 1986 in het geautomatiseerde bestand van het DNPP, voortgezet. Naast de presentatie van het Documentatiecentrum op Internet vroegen na- tuurlijk ook de traditionele taken veel aandacht. De collecties namen dit jaar opnieuw in omvang toe, mede door schenkingen van enkele particulieren. Bovendien vroeg de dienstverlening weer veel tijd. Medewerking aan onder- wijs en onderzoek en aan radio- en tv-programma’s liet zien dat anderen - ook vóór de aanwezigheid op Internet - de weg naar het DNPP wisten te vinden. Wetenschappelijk Adviescollege ten behoeve van het DNPP Conform het reglement van het DNPP (art. 7, 8, 9 en 10) werd in 1980 het Wetenschappelijk Adviescollege ten behoeve van het DNPP ingesteld. Op 1 januari 1996 bestond het Adviescollege uit de volgende leden: - prof.dr. D.F.J. Bosscher, hoogleraar Eigentijdse Geschiedenis, op voordracht van de Faculteit der Letteren; - prof.mr. D.J. Elzinga, hoogleraar Staatsrecht, op voordracht van de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid; - prof.dr. F.N. Stokman, hoogleraar Methoden en Technieken van Sociaal-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, op voordracht van de Faculteit der Psychologische, Pedagogische en Sociale Wetenschappen; - dr. J.M. van Boetzelaer (voorzitter), directeur Dienst Onderwijs, Onderzoek en Planning van de Rijksuniversiteit, op voordracht van de Bibliothecaris; - dhr. Chr. Wiersma, directeur Openbare Bibliotheek te Groningen, op voordracht van de Bibliothecaris; - dr. A.C. Klugkist, Bibliothecaris, adviserend lid. Het Wetenschappelijk Adviescollege vergaderde in het verslagjaar eenmaal, op 22 november. Het Adviescollege besprak op deze bijeenkomst de activi- 3 teiten die het DNPP tot dan toe in 1996 had ontplooid. Ook boog het zich over de plannen van het DNPP om op Internet een eigen web-site in te richten (zie in het onderstaande onder ’Automatisering en Internet’). Personeelsformatie Op 1 januari 1996 was de staf van het DNPP als volgt samengesteld: dr. A.P.M. Lucardie - wetenschappelijk medewerker (0,5 fte) mevr. I.M. Noomen - documentaliste (0,6 fte) mevr. B.H. Pier - secretaresse (0,7 fte) mevr. D. van Rheenen - documentaliste (0,5 fte) mevr. J.J.M. Strijbosch - secretaresse (0,3 fte) drs. G. Voerman - Hoofd (1,0 fte) Met ingang van 1 januari 1996 werd mevr. Van Rheenen als documentaliste benoemd. Zij volgde mevr. M. Nieboer op, die projectleider bibliotheekau- tomatisering werd aan de Hanzehogeschool te Groningen. Mevr. Van Rhee- nen was voor haar aanstelling als documentaliste op het secretariaat van het DNPP werkzaam. De aldus ontstane vacature werd per 16 februari 1996 vervuld door mevr. J.J.M. Strijbosch. In verband met het retro-project (zie hieronder) werd gedurende het verslagjaar de aanstelling van mevr. Noomen met 0,1 fte uitgebreid tot 0,6 fte. Ook in 1996 kon het DNPP zich weer verheugen in de medewerking van vrijwilligers. Drs. J. Hippe nam evenals in vorige jaren de verwerking van de publicaties van de reformatorisch-christelijke partijen voor zijn rekening. Dhr. H. Wiersma en de historici drs. B.H. de Boer en drs. R.F. van Wijk leverden elk een bijdrage aan enkele bibliografische projecten. Ook waren zij betrok- ken bij de verwerking van schenkingen, waar het vaste personeel als gevolg van de drukke werkzaamheden niet aan toe kwam. Met name met de ca- talogisering van partijaffiches is in het verslagjaar flinke vooruitgang ge- boekt. Ten slotte deden in 1996 twee studenten van de studierichting Politicologie van de Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen als stagiaire op het DNPP werker- varing op. Mevr. S. Blair rondde haar in oktober 1995 begonnen stage af op 1 april. Van 1 juli tot 1 september liep mevr. I.J.C. Riezebosch stage. Dienstverlening Ook in 1996 legde de dienstverlening een groot beslag

    The Rearguard of Freedom: The John Birch Society and the Development of Modern Conservatism in the United States, 1958-1968 by Bart Verhoeven, MA (English, American Studies), BA (English and Italian Languages) Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts July 2015 Abstract This thesis aims to investigate the role of the anti-communist John Birch Society within the greater American conservative field. More specifically, it focuses on the period from the Society's inception in 1958 to the beginning of its relative decline in significance, which can be situated after the first election of Richard M. Nixon as president in 1968. The main focus of the thesis lies on challenging more traditional classifications of the JBS as an extremist outcast divorced from the American political mainstream, and argues that through their innovative organizational methods, national presence, and capacity to link up a variety of domestic and international affairs to an overarching conspiratorial narrative, the Birchers were able to tap into a new and powerful force of largely white suburban conservatives and contribute significantly to the growth and development of the post-war New Right. For this purpose, the research interrogates the established scholarship and draws upon key primary source material, including official publications, internal communications and the private correspondence of founder and chairman Robert Welch as well as other prominent members. It is a continuous and emotionally taxing struggle that leaves the individual's ego in constant peril, subjugates mind and soul to an incessant interplay between intense passion and grinding routine, and in most cases should not drag on for over four years.

    Ex-Communist Party Choices and the Electoral Success of the Radical Right in Central and Eastern Europe Maria Snegovaya Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Maria Snegovaya All rights reserved ABSTRACT Ex-Communist Party Choices and the Electoral Success of the Radical Right in Central and Eastern Europe Maria Snegovaya What explains the proletarization (the increasing embrace by the blue-collar constituencies) of the radical right vote in the countries of post-Communist Europe? I argue that the centrist shift of the ex-Communist left parties along the economic policy dimension drives the electoral success of radical right parties in the region. I show that the programmatic shift of the ex-Communist left parties (as instrumented by the implementation of austerity reforms) opened up their traditional blue-collar constituencies to the redistributive appeals of the radical right parties. I test my argument using several different approaches. First, I examine the relationship between the support for the radical right parties and the ex-Communist left parties’ policy positions using a quantitative cross-country analysis. Second, I provide an overview of the experiences of the four Visegrád Group countries and trace the blue-collar constituencies’ shift away from the ex-Communist left parties to the populist and radical right parties over time, as the left parties became more economically centrist. I then test my argument using constituency-level and individual-level experimental survey data within Hungary. Both methods help establish that the centrist shift of the ex-Communist left parties along the economic policy dimension boosted support for the radical right party.

    The Populist Centre-Authoritarian Challenge: A Revised Account of the Radical Right’s Success in Western Europe. Elisabeth Ivarsflaten, Nuffield College. Abstract. This article brings new evidence to the debate about the causes of populist right parties’ success in contemporary democracies in Western Europe. It does so by criticizing and revising the most influential account of it—The New Radical Right in Western Europe (Kitschelt and McGann 1995). In three cases where we according to the influential study should expect a right-authoritarian winning strategy—France, Belgium, and Denmark—this study shows that a populist centre-authoritarian strategy was more successful. A number of criticisms of Kitschelt and McGann’s explanation are thus supported on new empirical grounds. The revised account presented here draws attention to aspects of the populist right’s success that have not been sufficiently studied. The ‘underdog’ image of the populist parties matters more than previously thought, and the electoral returns to these parties’ chauvinist positions are higher than earlier believed.1 Comments Welcome [email protected] 1 Introduction. The success of the populist right in Western Europe during the last decade was remarkable. Le Pen reached the second round in the French Presidential Election in April 2002. In the Netherlands, List Pim Fortuyn entered the governing coalition after the party’s success in the parliamentary election in May 2002. The Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) won 52 of 183 parliamentary seats in 1999 and entered the governing coalition. The Swiss People’s Party (SVP) became the largest party in the national election of 1999 gaining 22.5 percent of the vote.

The focus is on three conservative parties which share broadly similar topographical locations on the centre-right in their respective countries. The cases of the Conservative party in the UK, the Union pour un Mouvement Populaire in France and Prawo i Sprawiedliwość in Poland are compared here, using a range of sources internal and external to the parties. While ideology and policy do not exist in a vacuum, but in constant interplay with a broad range of institutional and contextual factors, these other variables are largely bracketed out for present purposes in order to concentrate on the ideo- logical and policy dimensions in their own right. In this meso-level analysis the focus is on the relationship between core ideological values, ideologically coloured understandings of national and international environments, general posture towards EU integration, and positions on specific institutions, processes or policies. It is argued that the degree of vari- ation between the parties revealed even at this intermediate level of detail is a useful counte- rbalance to the inevitably reductive categorisations and generalisations drawn in macro-level comparative studies.

It consists of conversations with nine prominent liberal politicians, each from a different country. All member-states of the European Community are represented except Ireland and Greece; Minoo Masani provides an Indian point of view. The conversations are not with academics, civil servants or journalists because only politicians know what it means to depend on popular favour and to have to compromise. Only one of those interviewed has at present executive power: Gaston Thorn, from Luxemburg, who is President of the European Commission. Jo Grimond and Wolfgang Mischnick are active parliamentarians in London and Bonn, respectively. Seven have been, at one time or another, members of government. Because of the British electoral system, Jo Grimond has never enjoyed the traditional rewards of a politician, while for Minoo Masani the tide of Mrs. Gandhi's Congress Party proved too strong. Apart from Gaston Thorn, the European Commission is here represented by Jean Rey, who was its President and is now Minister of State in Belgium; and by Jean François Deniau, who was in charge of the European Community's relations with developing countries before becoming Minister for Trade in the previous French government. Per Federspiel has been a member for many years of the Council of Europe for Denmark; he was President of its Assembly from 1960 to 1963.

Data analysis and conclusions of this paper are the sole responsibility of its author(s). 1 Introduction Models of how parties choose their linkage strategies usually posit that parties face a tradeoff between programmatic competition and clientelism (e.g. Dixit and Londregan 1996, Kitschelt 2000, Cox and McCubbins 2001, Keefer 2007, Lyne 2008). This theoretical modeling assumption has considerable plausibility, but direct evidence relies empirically on individual case studies or small-N comparisons. Yet a few studies have pointed out that parties may engage in product diversification and appeal to different constituencies with different linkage efforts (Magaloni et al 2009). The data for a large-scale global test of the assumption with observations across a broad spectrum of political parties have not been available until now. The Democratic Accountability project expert survey on political parties for the first time delivers the information to test the trade-off hypothesis on a global scale.
