PRESIDENTS REPORT

The 2015 year is a year to reflect on its changes and achievements with the following the more notable :  Penny & Grant Richardson did not seek re-election to committee, which we sincerely thank both of them for many years of dedication & work to uphold the values & functioning of our Society;  Sharryn Hilton accepted the Secretary, Show Secretary and FELIS Editor roles with enthusiasm, trepidation and many pleas for assistance in each of these vital roles;  Sharon Black accepted to be our Treasurer and Social Media Moderator bringing with her new ideas that would hopefully assist in improving awareness of SCS;  Peter Gunczy continued in his role of Webmaster and continued to enlighten our committee on new and different ways of reaching a Siamese & Cat loving audience via the electronic media;  Christine Gunczy who although not enjoying the best of health during 2015 continued as Kitten Registrar and together with husband Peter managed the Kitten Availability data on our website.  Valda McDermott joined (was enticed, encouraged) to join the Committee for 2015 bringing her decades of Siamese experience and expertise;  John Ferguson as the elected Vice President was my backup and sounding board with matters of Constitution, business, promotion and also achieving some sponsorship for our 2016 show;  Our aged and weather worn trailer underwent a restoration after 33 years ensuring its roadworthiness for many more years;  Society’s property (cages, trestle tables, etc) relocated from Trilian homestead (Freemans Reach) to Fullcircle Farm (Wilton).  Our Constitution underwent review with proposed amendments for consideration and decision at today’s Special general meeting;  Facebook page created and now moderated by Sharon Black furthering our exposure;  Mobile website nearing completion by our webmaster;

After many years a complete review of our Society’s Fees and Charges was completed by committee; Working with the team above has been a rewarding one with all the requirements and challenges presented to committee dealt with in a friendly and professional manner and at all times democratically. Congratulations and thank you to those members who enjoyed show success and as importantly exhibited and promoted our Siamese breed. Keep up the good work in 2016 as it is well proven that our Siamese remains a popular breed with sales of our kittens emanating from show exposure.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Special congratulations to the following members for a job well done in 2015:

Astraxalotte Cattery (Lee and Cheryl Gallagher) with multiple placings Garthowen Cattery (Chris Wiseman) Trilian Cattery (Grant & Penny Richardson) Christernee Cattery (Peter & Christine Gunczy) Kalinya Cattery (Tony & Bev Hurry) Lookatmese Cattery (Jay & Amie Hobbs) Lealjo Cattery (Joan Wright)

Such exposure now finds SCS with members (breeders) in nearly all States of Australia (NSW, QLD, SA, WA, TAS) as well as a reciprocal arrangement with CANT to exchange copies of FELIS with their magazine. Let’s keep up the good work and aim to have a full member in each State and Territory this year. Well done to all involved with our March 2015 show which found its committee with a short time to achieve a lot. To each and everyone involved with this event I sincerely thank you both as its Show Manager and your President. Our 59th All Breeds Show on February 27th at the Picton Shire Hall is well underway with its planning and in particular I must thank Sharryn Hilton for again taking on the responsibilities of Show Secretary. I must also thank those members who have already tested their breeding cats for PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) , a topic which I have written in December issue of FELIS. Simple, effective DNA testing is available to identify this disease so there is no reason why we cannot work together to combat its intrusion. Please have your cats tested and forward results to me as I am collating them to best assist us in managing this disease. Results are available to each and everyone of you. I cannot conclude my report without also making mention & thanking Sharryn Hilton for her work in revamping our FELIS. It continues to be professional in appearance and filled with content that should be of interest to our members. Thanks also to L J Hooker Picton for the financial support given in producing then distributing FELIS. When talking with those Siamese lovers & fellow breeders around the World, please remember to give them the link to our website & to the FELIS page. Finally, I again must thank my fellow Committee members for their work this year and for the support they have given me as your SCS President. To all our members continue the good work in breeding and promoting our Siamese and remember your SCS Committee is Bye for Now, here to work with and for you. SECRETARY’S REPORT PRESENTED AT AGM - 30TH JANUARY, 2016

Good afternoon members,

We have had a busy year with Cats NSW providing shows throughout the year. This past year has made me feel that I have not done my job well enough, by not being able to attend most of the shows due to health issues of either the human or cat form. For that I can only apologise for not being present to assist in the maintaining of the Siamese Cat Society’s face to the public. The wearing of multiple hats has certainly shown me that maybe I need also multiple heads!!

Our own Siamese Cat Society Show was held in March 2015 at Wilberforce Hall, it was a “Mad Hatters Theme” which made it fun for the day. A successful show and great fun had by all. Because we were essentially a new Show committee and a new Siamese Cat Society committee it was left to have the big day to the ‘few volunteers’ to ensure its success, but thankfully it went off without a hitch. The most important WINNER of the day was to Tony & Bev Hurry winning both the, JOYCE SELBY AWARD for the ‘BEST PURE SIAMESE EXHIBIT’ and also the LJ HOOKER PICTON AWARD for the ‘BEST PURE SIAMESE EXHIBIT, BRED BY EXHIBITOR’. Congratulations!

During the year, we were approached by the large chain PETBARN at Casula to have a display of our precious little beings at their OPEN DAY had by the store. Tony Hurry and I, took some of our cats to show the public, just what PURE SIAMESE are. We had at least one of our four colours to show everyone. We proved very popular and we both ended up staying (instead of a two hour window,) almost all day because of the enquiry and the interest shown in our display. Our cats were “purrfect” as we would hope and we think it has improved the name of Siamese in the community. CONGRATULATIONS GOES TO WINNERS OF THE FOLLOWING AWARDS: CAT OF THE YEAR AWARDS, CATS NSW - Won by Members of the SCS are as follows BEST KITTEN Tony & Bev Hurry 2nd and 5th

ENTIRE CAT Grant & Penny Richardson - 2nd (male) Peter & Christine Gunczy - 5th (female)

BEST MALE KITTEN Lee & Cheryl Gallagher 1st, 4th and 5th BEST FEMALE KITTEN Lee & Cheryl Gallagher 3rd and 4th

BEST ENTIRE CAT Lee & Cheryl Gallagher 2nd (male)

Our next show is scheduled for Saturday 27th February 2016 and it is themed as “Back to the Country“ it is to be held at Picton Shire Hall from 9.00am we are encouraging everyone to enter and enjoy a great day. So the rush is on to get this one organised and ensure our name remains untarnished in the excellence that we are Sharryn Hilton known to have a Show. Secretary, Siamese Cat Society of NSW Inc. By Sharryn Hilton, Show Secretary 2016

With this year’s show finally done dusted, I am happy to report that we had a very successful show which was held at the Wollondilly Shire Hall at Menangle Street, Picton on 27th February,2016. We had 65 entries of a great variety of cats on the day, another super friendly show that had smiles from everyone there. Many people commented upon how friendly it was and expressed interest in the type of show we had. It was a great show with a huge amount of interested people passing through the doors on the day. A big plus for the cat breeders to know that the cats are still so popular with general public. Loads of positive comments and lots of raffle tickets sold, to help cover the costs and the massive amount of prizes mostly donated by members of SCS committee. Tony Hurry Show Manager and I were kept busy all day ensuring things rolled along as smoothly as possible. Very few hiccups emanated, phew!! So in a thumbnail…… A fun day had by all!! Also Thank You Sponsors: OZ-PET, BLACKHAWK, LOVE-EMS, ORIVET, OWN, DERKS PET AND RURAL and LJ HOOKER PICTON (& Fullcircle Siamese) for their kind donations of Prizes and Awards. Special Thank you to Deb Nugent, our Show Processor who not only did this job but also trained “this newbie” into the Show Processing part of the role, with many late night emails, or an SMS (or 5-6) amend or attend to a problem that was brewing. Also, our huge thanks must go to the Stewards: Tayla Munro, who did a fantastic job!! A special thanks to Brad Curtis (Pres CATSNSW) for stepping into the role of Steward at the last minute (due to illness of our prior selected steward.) Not forgetting our Ring Recorders: Terry Goulden, John Greenway, Penny Richardson who don’t even get to wander the hall much due to the amount of work involved in collating the places etc for the Judges. You were great, many thanks as well. Thanks also to our very small band of workers who made the show not only workable but such a success, not only in the preparation prior to the show, but the set up, and dismantling of the cages and the tables, the decorations, the kitchen necessities, the running, and the huge cleaning up, after to ensure we had our bond returned as well…. A giant thank you!! Tony Hurry, John Ferguson, Peter Gunczy, Di Stokes, Deb Nugent, Amanda Ramsay, Marion Anstis, Renee Gunczy, Bev Hurry, Cheyenne Anderson for the 2 days of Setup, Running and Dismantle and Clean Up. I was also needed for airport duty both ways the day before and immediately after the show. To our Photographers DI Stokes and Peter Gunczy, many thanks. Also to our Caring Country Vet Dr Rennie Sinclair-Kydd for being our vet on the morning of the show and to Tracy of Charcoal Chicken Picton for the great food supplied to the workers and heaps left over to sell to the public on the day. I am sure we all slept very deeply the night of the show from sheer exhaustion, with so much work behind the scenes, no one has any idea how much is involved until they are personally doing it. So massive thanks must go out to a few people who did an awesome job in pulling this Show into line and making it a success!! So now onwards and upwards to our very special 60th ANNIVERSARY DIAMOND SCS CAT SHOW next year….

‘LIFE WITH GEM’ Written by Lee Gallagher

We, my wife Cheryl and I, are the owners of Kaluamoa Awesome Gem. We imported “Gem” from Hawaii in late 2011. That is a story in itself. In mid-2011, we spoke to Tony Hurry who was in negotiation to possibly import a Siamese from Charlee Abrams in Kawai. We asked if he would like us to visit her cattery and report back. And, he agreed. So, on our way back from America, we “dropped” in to visit Charlee and her cattery on the understanding that we were not buying a kitten. Charlee showed us around her cattery and then showed us her kittens that were for sale. Gem was one of the three kittens that she showed us. In fact, she was in negotiations with a lady in Japan who wanted to buy a kitten. Then communication went “dead”. At this time there had been a tsunami in the Pacific off Japan! So, from not wanting to buy a kitten, we were taken with Gem and proceeded to purchase him. The worst part of the process was the “internment” for 30 days at Eastern Creek Quarantine which we were so glad to be away from. Gem’s first show was a 4 ring combined show at Forestville, as an adult. We knew he was a “nice” cat with great disposition, but were a little embarrassed when Gem was placed first in each ring! Little did we know that 2012 would be a great year for our Gem. Out of 46 rings, (15 shows), Gem recorded 29 first places and by the end of his first year, his title was CCCA Gd Ch & Gold DGC. During these fifteen shows there were occasions when Gem “bombed” completely and other times, when he “streeted” the field. So, on 15 occasions, we had to prepare Gem for a show with a bath, clipping nails and the early morning starts. He absolutely loved his baths, and there were occasions when we put him in the water and literally walked away – without him moving or jumping out! This is something that still happens! He was also the NSWCFA G2 Male cat of the year. Gem had certainly got the tongues wagging with his performance on the bench during 2012. We certainly were on a learning curve as 2013 would prove.

2013 saw Gem attend 20 shows and come away with 51 challenges, 18 best of breeds, and 13 best in shows. As a result, he finished in first place in Cat of the Year for Group 2 and his other placings also helped. This was also the year that Gem’s progeny – his daughter, Astraxalotte Saphire Gem, entered the show scene. She was the best Group 2 female kitten and before the end of the show season had worked her way into fifth place as an adult cat. So we had father and daughter each in first place. Each year, it is possible to learn something about your cat/s. During 2013, on our long distance trips, eg Griffith, Lismore, Maclean; Gem spent most of his time lying in a pod on my wife’s lap without needing to be held or restrained. When he became restless, we would open his cage and let him walk into it, do his business and then let him come back into the front of the car. Disposition indeed!! In 2013, Gem really only bombed out in 2 shows – Bathurst and Oriental Shows. He also entered the CCCA Nationals in Melbourne and did well winning two challenges and 5 Top 10 placings from six rings. At the end of 2013, Gem’s title was CCCA Tr Gd Ch & Dia DGC.

One interesting story to come out of this year occurred at the Sydney Royal Show with Gem and his daughter, Saphire, entered. While waiting to go in for vetting, one of the show workers came down and said, “Has anyone lost a Siamese cat?” My thought – who would be so …………… to do that. On looking into Gem’s cage, I saw no Gem. Sugar!! Come with me she said. He is at the main gate and security has everything “under control”. On reaching the main gate, Gem was sitting on the petrol tank of a ute “surrounded” by 3 orange flashing security cars. Under control indeed! I walked up to Gem who continued to just lie there, knowing that I would turn up,… eventually. I collected him and put him back in his cage and went back to the cat pavilion where he earnt one (20 point) challenge from 2 rings on the day.

Members Article page 2

2014 was another successful year for Gem and us. Participating in 22 shows, including the CCCA Nationals in Brisbane, Gem was awarded 71 challenges from 71 rings, 15 best of breeds, and 15 best in shows. Thank goodness, he still enjoys travelling in the car. During this year, he sired nearly 30 kittens with almost half of them coming from our own queens. Some of these kittens would come into their own in 2015. Gem finished third in the Cat of the Year, his daughter, Saphire, was second in the female section and his son, Astraxalotte Tanzie Gem was the second best male kitten for the year. People who saw Gem were impressed with him and his manner, especially those who came to the Nationals in Brisbane. At the end of 2014, Gem’s title was CCCA Ruby Tr Gd Ch & Dia DGC & QLD Ch.

And so, in 2015, Gem went to 20 shows and was awarded 64 challenges, 42 best of breed and 17 best in shows. He was withheld in only one ring during the year. It wasn’t so much Gem’s efforts in 2015 that were the talking point in the cat fancy, but his progeny. In the male kittens, Gem had 3 seal point kittens from the same litter that were on the bench till the end of August. In that time, Astraxalotte Zaffre Gem earnt enough points to finish first, with his two brothers Sigma Gem running fourth and Cardovan Gem coming fifth. Another of his progeny, Braeside Rubin, (Tammy Jupp) came second in the males. With the females, Astraxalotte Smokey Gem finished in fourth place (in a short period on the bench), and Astraxalotte Perle Star, also in a short bench period, worked her way into third place by the end of the season. Braeside Kimbriella, (Tammy Jupp) was the best female kitten for the year. Rubin and Kimbriella were from the same litter. So, in the wash up, Gem sired 6 of the ten kittens in the Cat of the Year and was the grandfather to Perle Star (by Saphire Gem). At the end of 2015, Gem’s title stood at CCCA Diamond Tr Gd Ch & Dia DGC & QLD Ch.

As the year progressed, and we were travelling with so many kittens (in one cage), we decided to place one of his three entire seal point sons in Gem’s cage. This occurred from about May through till the end of August – without any type of fight or skirmish between the two boys. Some breeders were horrified at what we were doing, but we certainly knew our stud boy, Gem, and it was a feather in his cap to the amazement of other exhibitors. If the same situation arises in the future, the same approach will be undertaken. As his kittens have grown and developed in each litter, we have allowed them to have some time with their Dad, so as we ascend the stairs on our way to bed, the kittens join us on the expectation of some time with Dad – which he really enjoys. And he doesn’t play rough, either! At Bathurst, Zaffre started carrying on, so we asked the show manager if we could put Zaffre in with his father, and he agreed. Zaffre very quickly settled down.

At one show this year, judge, Val Harney, approached Cheryl and I (after judging) and said, “you need to be congratulated.” Our response – “Why? What have we done?” Her reply was lovely - “I have been judging in the cat fancy for over thirty years and judged lots of cats and kittens. But I have not seen the quality that your 3 seal point male kittens bring to the bench in all my years of judging. Congratulations!!” Just a tad chuffed, we was. And just to add, Zaffre Gem was in New Zealand with his new owner by September 18 and at his first show, ended up with enough points to be a titled cat – just like his father. As I said to another breeder who had bought one of Gem’s male kittens for breeding, “I look forward to coming to shows in the future and seeing Gem up against his progeny!” To which the breeder asked “Why so?” “Because if you and I are doing the right thing breeding wise, then the progeny should do better than the parent/s.”

It has been, not only a pleasure to be the owners of Awesome Gem, but a privilege. He is an amazing cat, and a wonderful example of his breed. He is rising 5 in age and has not really started to “darken” like some seal points can. He is far from what could be said to be a “perfect” cat, but he does come close. Interestingly, all his progeny have his very deep blue eye colour AND strong chins!! Going to shows over the last four years, has allowed us to meet lots of different people – some more interesting than others, as well as all the judges that have also had the pleasure to judge our boy. This is much appreciated when a judge gets to judge Gem for the first time – especially those from overseas. During 2016, we will be taking Gem to all the country shows, because the country shows need the support of all exhibitors in order to survive. We will then choose what shows we are going to attend from the remainder, as well as attending the CCCA Nationals in Adelaide. The cat fanciers of South Australia need to have the chance to see our boy. Gem also spends time “talking” to and with me, in which he has a range of sounds and mouth movements. 18

London: A Siamese cat has survived eight days in a box after she was accidentally put in the post by her owners.

Cupcake travelled with an order of DVDs from Falmouth in Cornwall, England to West Sussex – over 400 kilometres away. The recipient was stunned to discover Cupcake, who was extremely dehydrated, inside the box along with the DVDs.

They contacted the RSPCA who collected the cat and took her to Grove Lodge Vets in Worthing for a health check. Cupcake's owner, Julie Baggott, later travelled there from Falmouth to be reunited with the cat.

"When I realised she was missing two weeks ago it was the most horrible, scary feeling," she told the BBC. "We looked everywhere for her. I feel terrible about what's happened. "I put everything in the box and sealed it straight away so I don't know how she managed to get in there. "It was a miracle because she was alive and she's managed to survive that awful ordeal”.

Grove Lodge Vets said they would never have been able to reunite Cupcake with her owners if she had not been microchipped.

"We scanned this gorgeous girl to check for a microchip," they said. "Everyone was delighted and even more so when we found that the contact details were up to date and we were able to contact her owners straight away.

"This is probably one of the most extraordinary stories any of us at Grove Lodge Vets has ever heard.

"The serious side of this incredible journey is that poor Cupcake was extremely dehydrated and has required intensive treatment to ensure she recovers fully."

The vets said Cupcake had seemed "quite relaxed and unconcerned" while waiting for her owners in her kennel on the cat ward.
