This research is a qualitative research which is library research. Data collection method is library data that has been selected, searched, presented and analyzed. This study uses data analysis techniques in the form of content analysis. Content analysis is a scientific analysis of the message content of a data. One of the characteristics of the classical era Islamic political thought is that it does not question the position of religion and state, whether integrated or separate. The debates that occurred in the classical era on the establishment of a state, the election of a head of state, and the conditions that a head of state must-have. Besides, political thought that develops also tends to be a response to the prevailing socio-political conditions. The emergence of Sunni ideology is a form of anxiety over the viewpoints developed by groups that tend to discredit the position of the Prophet's companions who are considered by some on the opposite side to have committed treason or treason. -

The study also identifies the locations of Diba weave and its production. Based on the detailed analysis of Dida etymology and discovery locations, this paper present careful classification silk fabrics. Present study investigates the characteristics of Diba and introduces its sub-divisions from Pre-Islamic period to late Buyid dynasty. The paper reports the features of silk fabric of Ancient Persian, silk classification of Sasanian Empire based on discovery location, and silk sub-divisions of Buyaid dynasty. The results confirm the existence of Diba and its various types through a historical contextual analysis. INTRODUCTION Diba is one of the machine woven fabrics (Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism, 2009) which have been referred continuously as one of the exquisite silk fabrics during the history. History of weaving in Iran dated back to millenniums AD. The process of formation, production and continuity of this art in history of Iran took advantages of several factors such as economic, social, cultural and ecological factors. -

Irreverent Persia IRANIAN IRANIAN SERIES SERIES Poetry expressing criticism of social, political and cultural life is a vital integral part of IRREVERENT PERSIA Persian literary history. Its principal genres – invective, satire and burlesque – have been INVECTIVE, SATIRICAL AND BURLESQUE POETRY very popular with authors in every age. Despite the rich uninterrupted tradition, such texts FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE TIMURID PERIOD have been little studied and rarely translated. Their irreverent tones range from subtle (10TH TO 15TH CENTURIES) irony to crude direct insults, at times involving the use of outrageous and obscene terms. This anthology includes both major and minor poets from the origins of Persian poetry RICCARDO ZIPOLI (10th century) up to the age of Jâmi (15th century), traditionally considered the last great classical Persian poet. In addition to their historical and linguistic interest, many of these poems deserve to be read for their technical and aesthetic accomplishments, setting them among the masterpieces of Persian literature. Riccardo Zipoli is professor of Persian Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, where he also teaches Conceiving and Producing Photography. The western cliché about Persian poetry is that it deals with roses, nightingales, wine, hyperbolic love-longing, an awareness of the transience of our existence, and a delicate appreciation of life’s fleeting pleasures. And so a great deal of it does. But there is another side to Persian verse, one that is satirical, sardonic, often obscene, one that delights in ad hominem invective and no-holds barred diatribes. Perhaps surprisingly enough for the uninitiated reader it is frequently the same poets who write both kinds of verse. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2. ABSTRACT This thesis is a political study of the Umayyad Caliphate during the reign of f Abd a I -M a lik ibn Marwan, 6 5 -8 6 /6 8 4 -7 0 5 . The first chapter deals with the po litical, social and religious background of ‘ Abd al-M alik, and relates this to his later policy on becoming caliph. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. An attempt is made to throw light on its causes, and on the policies adopted by ‘ Abd al-M alik to contain it. -

IKHTILAF (DIFFERENCE) AND TAFAHOM (MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING) IN ISLAMIC FIQH (JURISPRUDENCE) CAUSES AND ETHICAL REPONSES Mahmoud Abboud Al Harmoush Definitions of ikhtilaf and khilaf ccording to al Raghib al Isfahani’s Mufradat al Qur’an (Qur’anic Terms): “Ikhtilaf (difference) Aand mukhalafah (inconsistency/disagreement) are [terms which apply] when everyone follows a path that is different from the paths followed by everybody else in his situation or speech.” That is to say, they are applicable when there is no clash or discord, though when “ikhtilaf in speech” does occur between people it may entail a conflict, so the word can be applied if there is a dispute or a heated argument. Semantically, ikhtilaf does not convey the meaning of discord and strife. Rather, it describes the situations and mental attitudes of people who are not necessarily in conflict with each other; however, when a person is displeased as a result of a disagreement with another person for some reason or another, this ikhtilaf can become a cause of conflict. Black and white are opposites and different, but red and green are different without being opposites.”1 Al Kafawi lists four differences between ikhtilaf and khilaf as follows: “1 – Ikhtilaf applies [in a situation] in which the paths are different, while the intention is that they should be one [and the same]. -

1 AKPIA @ MIT - Studies on ARCHITECTURE, HISTORY & CULTURE History and the Production of the “Culture of Shiraz” Setrag Manoukian Introduction My research project at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT focused on the production of knowledge in contemporary Shiraz and in particular on some of the most visible products of this evolving concatenation: the buildings and public initiatives that mark the landscape of Shiraz today.1 These diverse products are constructed, presented, and interpreted mainly through the modality of history, which constitutes the main frame of reference to imagine the city and its place within the Iranian nation. Public history The Islamic Republic, since its inception, has devoted many efforts to the control of public space. These efforts have been oriented toward mapping revolutionary discourse onto streets and squares through images, texts, and objects as well as toward conforming existing images, objects, and texts to what were perceived as the tenets of the new state.2 1 I spent January and February 2004 at AKPIA at MIT and found a lively intellectual community that helped me to sharpen my views. Shi'ism Jihad
Islam – Shi‘a The article will examine the origins of the Shi‘as and discuss their distinctive perspective on war. The term Shi‘a refers to the party of ‘Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad. The Shi‘as claimed that ‘Ali was the only legitimate successor (imam) to the Prophet Muhammad having been explicitly designated by him at Ghadir Khum and other occasions. The Shi‘as further restricted leadership of the community to the family (ahl al-bayt) of the Prophet. Such leadership was designated by the term imam and is passed on from father to blood successor through a mode of conferring titled nass. With the coming of ‘Ali to power in 656 CE, Shi‘ism emerged as an effective religious movement. The massacre of Husayn, the son of ‘Ali, and his forces at Kerbala during his uprising against the Caliph Yazid in 681 was an important milestone in Shi‘i history as it affirmed notions of injustices endured by the progeny of the Prophet and exacerbated a passion for martyrdom. Husayn’s activist movement was followed by other militant movements like those of Mukhtar b. ‘Ubayd al-Thaqafi (d. 687) and Zayd b. ‘Ali (d. 740), the grandson of Husayn. Shi‘i Theology and Jurisprudence Shi‘i theology and jurisprudence took definitive shape in the times of the fifth and sixth imams, Muhammad al-Baqir (d. 733-737) and Ja‘far al-Sadiq (d. 765). The later, in particular, was largely responsible for the construction of a Shi‘i legal edifice and the formulation of the Shi‘i doctrine of the imamate. -
