The major component in the studied populations was either thymol or γ-terpinene. Distinct differentiation of populations with respect to chemical composition of essential oils might be related to spatial distribution of the studied populations. No correlations between morphology, anatomy, and essential oil yield and composition were determined. Both capitate and peltate glandular trichomes were found on calyces, whereas the latter were noticed on the abaxial and adaxial leaf surface. Sytsma (Dept. of Botany, University of Wisconsin, Madison) Annals of Botany (in press) Abstract • Background and Aims - The genus Salvia has traditionally included any member of the tribe Mentheae (Lamiaceae) with only two stamens and with each stamen expressing an elongate connective. The recent demonstration of the non-monophyly of the genus presents interesting implications for staminal evolution in the tribe Mentheae. In the context of a molecular phylogeny, we characterize the staminal morphology of the various lineages of Salvia and related genera and present an evolutionary interpretation of staminal variation within the tribe Mentheae. • Methods. Two molecular analyses are presented in order to investigate phylogenetic relationships in the tribe Mentheae and the genus Salvia. The first presents a tribal survey of the Mentheae and the second concentrates on Salvia and related genera. Schematic sketches are presented for the staminal morphology of each major lineage of Salvia and related genera. • Key Results. These analyses suggest an independent origin of the staminal elongate connective on at least three different occasions within the tribe Mentheae, each time with a distinct morphology. Each independent origin of the lever mechanism shows a similar progression of staminal change from slight elongation of the connective tissue separating two fertile thecae to abortion of the posterior thecae and fusion of adjacent posterior thecae. We characterize a monophyletic lineage within the Mentheae consisting of the genera Lepechinia, Melissa, Salvia, Dorystaechas, Meriandra, Zhumeria, Perovskia, and Rosmarinus. • Conclusions.

After picking up luggage we met up with Andrea, one of our guides for the tour who took us to our bus which was driven by Zoli (who had driven on our tour in 2013). It didn’t long to load up and we were soon on our way to a small village where we were shown a traditional church built in the 13th century. Thatched cottages looked quaint and soon we heard the drumming of a male SYRIAN WOODPECKER. We spotted it coming in and out of a nest hole with the male and female taking turns to feed the young. A cracking male BLACK REDSTART sat atop a weather vane allowing good photographic opportunities whilst common species were seen such as EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE, COMMON STARLING and a distant singing EUROPEAN SERIN. We were then off towards our base but along the way stopped off at a woodland for a brief stroll. EUROPEAN NUTHATCH and SHORT-TOED TREECREEPERS were seen plus SPOTTED FLYCATCHERS, whilst the songs of COMMON CHAFFINCH, SONG THRUSH and EUROPEAN ROBIN emanated from the woodland.

J., Jamzad, Z. & Xiang, C. L. 2015. 06. 30: Nepeta wuana (Nepetinae, Nepetoideae, Lamiaceae), a new species from Shanxi, China.- Iran. J. Bot.21(1): 13-18. Tehran. Nepeta wuana H. J. Dong, C. L. Xiang & Z. Jamzad, (Lamiaceae), a new species found in Shanxi Province, China, is described and illustrated. The closest relative of the new species is the Chinese endemic N. sungpanensis C.Y. Wu but it clearly differs from it in the prolonged middle lobe of the lower corolla lip, as well as the much larger leaves, and sharper calyx lobes. Microfeatures of leaf epidermis, pollen grains, and nutlets of the new species are also explained. (sage), which belongs to the tribe Mentheae of the subfamily Nepetoideae within the family Lamiaceae, is well-known for its medicinal, ornamental, culinary and hallucinogenic uses. The section Hemisphace Benth. of this genus is respresented in Turkey by three species. The present study is conducted on two morphologically similar Salvia species belonging to this section: Salvia napifolia Jacq. and S. russellii Benth. (excluding S. verticillata L.). For this purpose, the pericarp ultrastructure of these species is investigated in detail with the help of light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Morphometric characters are analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) post-hoc test for multiple comparisons. The taxonomic potential of pericarp characteristics is discussed. The most prominent traits are the thickness of the pericarp, mesocarp and sclerenchyma region that permit the separation of the species studied. SYTSMA 2 2 Department of Botany, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706 USA • Premise of the study: The mint family (Lamiaceae) is the sixth largest family of fl owering plants, with the tribe Mentheae containing about a third of the species. We present a detailed perspective on the evolution of the tribe Mentheae based on a phylogenetic analysis of cpDNA and nrDNA that is the most comprehensive to date, a biogeographic set of analyses using a fossil-calibrated chronogram, and an examination of staminal evolution. • Methods: Data from four cpDNA and two nrDNA markers representing all extant genera within the tribe Mentheae were ana- lyzed using the programs BEAST, Lagrange, S-DIVA, and BayesTraits. BEAST was used to simultaneously estimate phylog- eny and divergence times, Lagrange and S-DIVA were used for biogeographical reconstruction, and BayesTraits was used to infer staminal evolution within the tribe. • Key results: Currently accepted subtribal delimitations are shown to be invalid and are updated. The Mentheae and all fi ve of its subtribes have a Mediterranean origin and have dispersed to the New World multiple times. The vast majority of New World species of subtribe Menthinae are the product of a single dispersal event in the mid-late Miocene. At least four transitions from four stamens to two stamens have occurred within Mentheae, once in the subtribe Salviinae, once in the subtribe Lycopinae, and at least twice in the subtribe Menthinae.
