The content of the programme will serve as proof that there are neither confessional nor national borders that could diminish the power of a genuine prayer. The text of Mother Teresa's prayers forms a uniform basis for the music, its soul and spirit; this is a story about the power of faith and the source of inspiration," relates the artistic director of the Latvian Radio Choir, Sigvards Kļava, who came up with the idea of the concert. Pētris Vasks's composition The Fruit of silence, the lyrics of which were written by Mother Teresa, was created following a suggestion made by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. The composer describes the opus as a very silent meditation: "There are five road signs there – prayer, faith, love, the service of God and peace. With this composition I want to remind listeners that this road does exist." The composition Litany to Mother Teresa by Andrejs Selickis, with lyrics written both by Mother Teresa and the author, will also be performed at the concert. The transcendental sacral texts are intertwined with elements of Latvian folk music, with the choral and orchestral sound enriched by that of bagpipes. In addition, the audience will hear the composition A Drop in the Ocean by Ēriks Ešenvalds, which is dedicated to Mother Teresa,Silence, love and light by Rihards Dubra, and Silouan´s song by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, in which the energy can be felt not only through the music but also as the author’s very personal declaration of faith. Jahrhundert.

PRESSRELEASE The Laureates of the Polar Music Prize 2013 are: YOUSSOU N’DOUR & KAIJA SAARIAHO Youssou N’Dour Citation: The Polar Music Prize 2013 is awarded to Youssou N’Dour from Senegal. A West African griot is not just a singer, but a storyteller, poet, singer of praise, entertainer and verbal historian. Youssou N’Dour is maintaining the griot tradition and has shown that it can also be changed into a narrative about the entire world. With his exceptionally exuberant band Super Étoile de Dakar (Dakar star) and his musically ground breaking and political solo albums, Youssou N’Dour has worked to reduce animosities between his own religion, Islam, and other religions. His voice encompasses an entire continent's history and future, blood and love, dreams and power. Kaija Saariaho Citation: The Polar Music Prize 2013 is awarded to Kaija Saariaho from Finland. After studying at IRCAM in Paris, an institution for research and study of electro-acoustic music, Kaija Saariaho has developed into a unique composer, a metal worker's daughter who re- examines what music can be. When she was growing up, the music that inspired her came not from the radio but from the pillow; that was where she found the music she dreamt of. Kaija Saariaho combines acoustic instruments with electronics and computers. She has written chamber music, orchestral works and operas. Kaija Saariaho is a modern maestro who opens up our ears and causes their anvils and stirrups to fall in love. On Tuesday 27th of August the Laureates will receive the prize from His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a gala ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall to be followed by a celebratory banquet at Grand Hôtel.

The Karol Szymanowski Quartet Agata Szymczewska, Robert Kowalski, Volodia Mykytka, Karol Marianowski Ever since its founding in Warsaw in 1995, the Karol Szymanowski Quartet has been characterised by a constant search for new inspiration and an openness to the unpredictable; and great musicians have contributed their voices to the sound of the renowned ensemble. To this day, its members are united by an extraordinary common understanding of music, a shared basic inspiration grounded in a commitment to Polish music and the Polish composer, Karol Szymanowski. His music, with ist immense freedom and infinite possibilities of expression, still exercises a strong power of identification on the ensemble even after 25 years. The Karol Szymanowski Quartet began its chamber music education at the Hanover University of Music and Performing Arts with Hatto Beyerle. Eberhard Feltz, Walter Levin, Isaak Stern, Bernard Greenhouse, Alfred Brendel, Seiji Ozawa, Friedemann Weigle, as well as members of the Amadeus, Emerson, Juilliard and Guarneri Quartets were other important mentors. Numerous prizes and awards followed, for example at competitions in Weimar, Hannover, Melbourne, Osaka and Florence. Beginning in 2001, the quartet benefitted from a three year membership of the BBC’s “New Generation Artists Scheme“. The Karol Szymanowski Quartet has received great recognition for ist exploration of Alban Berg’s music and for the first performance of works dedicated to the quartet. But it was above all as ambassadors of Szymanowski’s string quartets and the music of Polish and Eastern European composers, including Witold Lutosławski, Sofia Gubaidulina, Mieczysław Weinberg and Krzysztof Penderecki - with whom the quartet had a close working relationship - that enabled it to enter the top rank of the international music scene over the next few years; a commitment that was honoured in 2005 with the renowned “Szymanowski Prize“ and in 2007 with the Polish Medal of Honour.
