A Newsletter for the Entire Community1 of Nazareth Academy Grade School Dear Friends,

“Rooted in Faith, Growing in Love, Branching Out in Love” was the theme expressed by our 8th grade graduates during their Graduation Liturgy on Monday, June 1 and is likewise the theme that can be observed on each page of this newsletter. As you well know, every newsletter you receive is replete with news and events that make you aware that Naz- areth Academy Grade School is an extraordinary school with extraordinary happenings. Likewise, this newsletter will also help you realize that we are strongly rooted in our Chris- tian faith, challenged to grow daily in Christ’s love, and encouraged to branch out with that love through a variety of service learning projects. It is in this environment of love that our students learn not only academics, but also much about themselves, their God, and oth- ers. The lived charism and lively spirit that is present in our school is a direct outcome of the many generous and bighearted persons who have given of their time, talents, ideas, ener- gies, and monies to help us accomplish what we set out to do! Please accept my heartfelt

A A M E S G A E F R O M T H E P R I N C I P L A gratitude to you for assisting us in providing such a quality educational experience for our young men and women. Regardless of the type of contribution - presence, ideas, service, financial support – each and every gift is gratefully accepted and graciously appreciated! I join with St. Paul in expressing my gratitude to you: "I thank God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy." (Philippians 1:3) May God continue to bless you and your families!

Sincerely,

Sr. Mary Ann, CSFN Principal

2 Between Hello and Goodbye

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Many in the Nazareth Academy Grade School community mourned the unexpected loss of Joseph Brancato, Class of 1981. Tragically, Joe passed away on March 17, 2009, just weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer. There are no words to describe the pain this has brought to Joe’s immediate family; his wife Christine and sister Linda, '86. We pray that God and the memories of Joe will comfort his family, friends and coworkers who mourn his loss. The silver thread that embraced the life of Joseph Brancato can be simply stated… A language of the heart. It is understood that a child must choose to respond to the opportunities within his life. It is a choice, cannot be taught, and generates from the soul. As a young boy, Joe understood his choices and chose a virtuous path. As a young man, he challenged himself by bringing out the best in himself and others. As an adult Joe cultivated and perfected his virtues and gifts through honoring himself and living in a manner which epitomizes respect, compassion, generosity, patience, purposefulness, thankfulness, friendliness, trust, love and unity. The Class of 1981 would like to honor Joe for the manner he chose to live his life by offering a scholarship to a Nazareth Academy Grade School student personifying and practicing their own… language of the heart while bringing out the best in themselves and others. We have established the Joseph Brancato Memorial Alumni Scholarship - the first scholarship to be awarded to a student at NAGS in Joe’s memory. As an enthusiastic advocate of his grade school alma mater, Joe was always ready to lend a hand. We believe that he would heartily agree that this cooperative effort to help students discover their talents, connect with their faith, pursue their education and inspire the world, is a cause worthy of your support. We ask that you join us by making a donation to the newly established Joseph Bran- cato Memorial Alumni Scholarship To coincide with the first distribution of the Scholarship, we are planning an Alumni Scholarship Luncheon on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at school. This is an ambitious plan and we need all N.A.G.S. alumni, particularity the members of the Classes of 1981 and 1986, as well as Joe’s friends, to get involved in some capacity. It is our hope that the luncheon event will perpetually cele- brate and recognize the achievements of Joe, our friend and classmate, alumni, student scholarship winners and the generosity of donors. Donations can be made online at www.nazarethacademy.net, by clicking the Joseph Bran- cato Memorial Alumni Scholarship link on our homepage. Checks can also be made payable and sent to “NAGS,” ATTN: Joseph Brancato Memorial Alumni Scholarship, 4710 Grant Avenue, Phila., PA 19114. For additional information or to volunteer for this important endeavor, please con- tact any one of us listed below, or call Pat McGarvey, Development Director, at nag- [email protected] or 215-637-77777, ext. 206.

Sincerely, Angela (Marano) Carp, '81 [email protected] Susan (Zajac) Mordan, '81 [email protected] Sally (Gaughan) Unger, '81 [email protected]

Mission Statement The Joseph Brancato Memorial Alumni Scholarship was founded by alumni, in memory of Joseph Brancato, '81, to provide educational opportunities in the form of Tuition Assistance for children attending Nazareth Academy Grade School.

3 Nazareth Academy Grade School 2008 Annual Report P r e s i d e n t ‘ s R e p o r t

Dear Friends of Nazareth Academy Grade School, A recent article in “Momentum,” a magazine for educators, contained an important message for all of us involved in the mission in education. The article stated: “Students are multimedia sponges.” New times call for new methods and Nazareth is on a mission to meet the needs of our students in their efforts to excel in technology. With the Development goal of “Technology: Envision the Possibilities” for the 2008 Annual Giving Fund, Nazareth made the commitment to provide the equipment for our own “multimedia sponges.” We are ahead of schedule for the September 2009 target installation of sixty new computers and five additional White Boards. Because of your generosity and commitment to the education of our children, the goal of the 2008 Annual Giv- Nazareth Academy Grade Grade Nazareth Academy ing is complete! The children will reap the benefits on their return from summer vacation. Nazareth continues to focus on curriculum, instruction and assessment to be effective in its mission of education. The technology tools that you have provided will in a very unique way give the students those tools needed to excel. Thank you for your continued support of the goals that Nazareth seeks to fulfill. May God bless you and your family for part- nering with us in the schools mission. In conjunction with the completion of the 2008 funded project, we will also involve grandparents, parents and friends in our program “Technology: Envision the Possibilities.” The technology lab will be open for older adults to work hand in hand with members of the staff and students. The program is our way of sharing the knowledge provided for the stu- dents in a unique manner. They will be ambassadors that will offer what they have learned with others outside the school. We can only “envision the opportunities!” Sincerely, Sr. Martin Duffy, CSFN

Currently residing in Fort Meyers, Florida, Ruth Gendek A LA U M N I Zook, '49, recently wrote to Sr. Martin Duffy in response to Sister’s request for old pho- tos and NAGS testimonials. Ruth replied, stating that reading issues of the Newsletter brings her back to many happy times as a child. "I have wonderful memories of grade school. The sixth, seventh and eighth grades were located in the basement of the high school in one very large room. Our teacher was Sister Simplicia, and she was the biggest influence in my life other than my parents. She taught me so much more than book knowledge. I re- spected and loved her very much." Nazareth was proud to partner with SEPTA in “Stop Hunger At Your Station,” a food drive for Phila- bundance, the region’s largest hunger relief organization. The invitation to participate was extended by NAGS Board of Trustee Member Fran Kelly, SEPTA’s Assistant GM of Government and Public Affairs. The second and fourth grades led the effort which resulted in over fourteen boxes filled with food for people in need. A SEPTA bus, specially decorated for the event, made a special stop to pick up the donations. Fran exclaimed, "Once again Nazareth shined!” Recalling our Capital Campaign slogan, Fran stated, "Everyone at Nazareth really is building a better world, one student at a time. Nazareth was touched to hear that Christian’s “wish” to the Foundation was not entirely for his benefit, but for Jake’s as well. Kathleen Gregory, his mother, stated, “The doctors caring for Jake could not find another patient anywhere that was living with both CF and Biliary Atresia. When we say that Jake is our miracle, we truly mean it.”

In May, Grade 6 held a Bake Sale to benefit the students at Our Lady of Confidence Day School. The school educates children with mental and physical disabilities. NAGS students were more than happy to dip into their pockets to support the institution that “teaches students to follow the Gospel message of love and justice” and encourages them to be contributing members of soci- ety. The school instructs students from ages 4-1/2 through 21 years of age. Gloria Berbakov, organizer, knew that her son Emil’s sixth grade class would rise to the occasion! The Berbakov’s other son, John, is a student at Our Lady of Confidence. Mrs. Berbakov was truly moved at the generosity of our students who embraced the opportunity to help children struggling with their disabilities. We applaud the efforts of Mrs. Berbakov, Mrs. Bernice Duesler, '79, and the Sixth Grade students in raising $350.00 for Our Lady of Confidence Day School! If you are interested in supporting Our Lady of Confidence, checks may be sent to the school at: 314 N. Easton Rd., Willow Grove, PA 19090

Students of the Class of 2009 were swept away in the Railroad-themed festivities planned to celebrate their graduation. The Seventh Grade par- ents and students organized the extraordinary events that symbolized the graduates new journey to high school. Upon their arrival at the long-awaited dance, eighth graders were greeted by a steaming railroad tunnel complete with tracks in the front of the school. Steps away, the lobby was transformed into a station concourse featuring a ticket booth manned by who else but “Mrs. Achilles,” the eighth grade teacher. Benches for our travelers also included teacher look-alikes, a high school destination schedule, a sparkling fountain and escalators leading down to the grand station that was outfitted with fully decorated railway cars. After the students toured the grand station, the evening’s excitement began as the DJ played popular song requests that kept the seventh and eight grade students dancing all evening. We commend the team effort of the Seventh Grade parents and students in planning a night the graduates will always remember with a smile!

STUDENTS WALK to support the AW A L K -H O- N T Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund

A simple handwritten note from 6th grade student Samantha Simon led to a great endeavor, in the form of a Walk-a-Thon to benefit families caring for critically ill children. Samantha’s earnest request was to help families in our community who are in need. Several days later, NAGS parent Chris Showers approached Sr. Mary Ann with a request to support the Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund, an organization which he serves as a Board Left: Peggy Dolan, member. Ling Young: A Long Lasting Friendship Continues Since 2001, N.A.G.S. has been honored to benefit from a unique friendship and bond with 9/11 survivor Ling Young and her husband Donald. Under the guidance of Sr. Mary Ann Allton, the Class of 2004 established the relation- ship by sending letters of prayer, concern and comfort during Ling’s arduous recovery that included 30 operations. Today, Ling continues to inspire our community with her courageousness, faith and determination.
