So the American people got more politics, more impasse. CELEBRATING OUR PAST Close to home, voters in the Keys have shown they’re not afraid to bypass politicians and cast their lot with men and women who come from outside the closed circle of partisan politics. On the County Commission, Sylvia Murphy’s 2006 victory was clearly one that caught political powerbro- kers by surprise. That was followed up two years later by the successful citizen-soldier campaigns of commis- sioners Heather Carruthers and Kim Wigington, who defeated long-time entrenched politicians. Neither had served in elected office before and both brought a fresh, down-to-earth perspective to gover- nance that has been most refreshing. Two new members of the Monroe County School Board were first-time campaigners — one a former high school principal, the other a business consultant who graduated from Key West schools — neither a skilled politician. There are other examples of non-politicians winning elections here, including in Key West, Marathon, Layton and Islamorada. It’s too early to know if Italy’s new government — formed with business executives, bankers and diplomats — will succeed. But the message Monti sent is pretty clear: The kind of house cleaning needed in these tough econom- ic times requires public service as the first priority.
