The Juilliard School presents ChamberFest 2019 Monday, January 14, 2019, 4:30pm Paul Hall SCHUMANN Märchenerzählungen, Op. 132 Nikki Pet Nikki Pet of Glastonbury, Conn., began playing clarinet at age 10 and is studying with Alan Kay through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard exchange. She has attended summer programs including Kneisel Hall, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Greenwood Music Camp and played in orchestras including the Boston Youth Symphony, Juilliard Pre-College Symphony, and New York Youth Symphony. She won the top prize in the 2015 International Grande Music Competition, 2015 Korean Radio Broadcast Competition, and 2016 Hartford Music Club Competition. She is a junior at Columbia majoring in computer science and mathematics. Lucie Ticho Lucie Ticho, who is pursuing a joint degree at Columbia and Juilliard, was a semifinalist in the Stulberg, Klein, and Johansen International String Competitions. In high school, she was the principal cellist of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and a soloist with several Chicago area orchestras. She has attended programs such as the Aspen Music Festival, New York String Orchestra Seminar, and National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. She has collaborated with artists such as violinist Stefan Jackiw, singer-songwriter Ben Folds, and dancer Charles “Lil Buck” Riley. She studies political science at Columbia. Leon Bernsdorf León Bernsdorf, born in Hamburg, Germany, began his journey at the piano at age 5. His international breakthrough came in 2016 when he won third prize in the Franz Liszt Competition in Budapest, an award that was important for his piano career. His 18-19 season engagements include concerts with the orchestras of Budapest, Eger, and other major Hungarian cities, and solo recitals in Hungary and Germany. He is a first-year DMA student at Juilliard in the studio of Robert McDonald. • Celia Ascher Doctoral Scholarship DVORÁK� String Quintet No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 97 Hikaru Yonezaki Violinist Hikaru Yonezaki (BM, ‘17, violin) is passionately committed to connecting to the world around her, having already been heard in Europe and South America, as well as the U.S. and Canada. She is pursuing her master’s degree at Juilliard with Masao Kawasaki. She has performed in master classes for Pamela Frank and Frans Helmerson at Juilliard, where she is also a member of the orchestra. Her affinity for collaboration extends to double concertos and chamber music works. She is a recipient of a Japanese Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. • Charles H. Bechter Scholarship Mitsuru Yonezaki A student of Catherine Cho at Juilliard, Mitsuru Yonezaki began her violin studies with Fudeko Takahashi at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. She has also received tutelage from Joanna Kurkowicz, Peter Zazofsky, and Michael Frischenschlager. She has won numerous prizes and has performed throughout the New England area as well as in Japan, Italy, Canada, and Austria. As an orchestra member, she has toured the Americas as well as Europe, where she has led performances in prestigious halls such as the Musikverein and Concertgebouw. She also enjoys sharing her music outside of concert halls, having performed for children in underprivileged communities and the elderly in nursery homes. • Suntory Tomodachi Scholarship, Dorothy DeLay Scholarship Samuel Rosenthal Violist Sam Rosenthal is a first-year undergraduate student at Juilliard studying with Heidi Castleman and Hsin-Yun Huang. He grew up in Cleveland, where he studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a member of the Young Artist Program with Jeffrey Irvine. Since 2016, he has attended the Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island, N.Y., which has included residencies in Tel Aviv (2018) and Sarasota, Fla. (2017, 2018). • Kovner Fellowship Joshua Kail Joshua Kail has participated in numerous music programs and festivals, including New York Youth Symphony (NYYS), Chamber Music Program at NYYS, Greenwood Music Camp, Face the Music, Interlochen, and Juilliard Pre-College, where he studied with Hsin-Yun Huang, Yi-Fang Huang, and Molly Carr. Last summer was his fourth at the Perlman Music Program, where he studied with Kirsten Docter and Carol Rodland while immersing himself in chamber music with Merry Peckham. He was a semifinalist at the 2018 Stulberg International String Competition and is a sophomore at Juilliard, studying with Hsin-Yun Huang and Heidi Castleman. • Richard Holman Scholarship, C. V. Starr Scholarship, Kurt and Maria Wolter Scholarship Sterling Elliott Sterling Elliott grew up in Newport News, Va., where he began his cello studies at age 3 and made his solo debut at age 7, when he was the first-place Junior Division winner of the PYO Concerto Competition. After a recent solo performance with the New York Philharmonic, Elliott has become a regular substitute cellist in the orchestra while he studies with Joel Krosnick at Juilliard working toward an undergraduate degree. • Kovner Fellowship BEETHOVEN Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 Kamalia Freyling Originally from Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., clarinetist Kamalia Freyling strives to engage her audiences with dynamic and meaningful performances. An avid orchestral musician, she recently performed with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and Albany Symphony, among others. She is a master’s student at Juilliard studying with Jon Manasse. After graduating, she will be joining the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as its E-flat and second clarinetist. • Susan W. Rose Graduate Fellowship, Mary L. Bianco Graduate Fellowship Kyle Olsen Kyle Olsen, a native of Portland, Oregon, is a bassoonist in his first year at Juilliard, studying for his master’s with William Short. He has a BM from Rice University, where he studied with Benjamin Kamins. Returning home frequently, he has been both a soloist and a substitute musician with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra. In recent summers, he has participated in festivals such as Music Academy of the West, National Repertory Orchestra, and Oregon Music Festival. In his free time, he enjoys roasting coffee beans and exploring the city. • Juilliard Scholarship David Alexander David Alexander is a third-year horn student at Juilliard who has performed at festivals including the Colorado College Summer Music Festival, National Symphony Orchestra's Summer Music Institute, and the National Youth Orchestra USA. An avid chamber musician, he was a Kaplan Fellow at the Bowdoin International Music Festival and has performed at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage and Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall as a founding member of the AES V Brass Quintet. His principal teachers have included Julie Landsman, Michelle Baker, and Robert Johnson. • Kovner Fellowship Carolyn Semes Carolyn Semes, a senior at Juilliard studying with Laurie Smukler, has been a soloist with the Newark Symphony, Ambler Symphony, Old York Road Symphony, Temple University Orchestra, Macau Youth Orchestra, and Shanghai Philharmonic. She has been on the radio locally on From the Top, in Shanghai on the Weekly Radio Broadcast, and in Hong Kong on RTHK. She was a fellow at Music Academy of the West and Tanglewood Music Center. • Constance Goulandris Scholarship, Alfred E. and Dorothy Lyon Scholarship, John and Mary Cufalo Violin Scholarship Sophia Sun Canadian-born violist Sophia Sun loves to play and collaborate with other enthusiastic musicians. At Juilliard, she received her bachelor’s in 2013 and is currently a master’s candidiate studying with Toby Appel and Misha Amory. An avid chamber musician, she has performed across Europe and the U.S. in music festivals and outreach projects, including the Music Academy of the West, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Ship of Tolerance Project. She is a faculty member at the St. Ignatius Loyola Christian School and has a private teaching studio of her own. Besides pursuing her passion for performing and teaching music, she dreams of one day opening her own bakery. • Eleanor Morgan Satterlee Memorial Scholarship, Hanna Rubens Scholarship, Jan and Bertha Werter Scholarship Anne Richardson Born and raised in Louisville, Anne Richardson began her cello studies when she was 6 with Wayne Krigger. Having moved to New York in 2012, she is studying at Juilliard with Richard Aaron. Her other primary teachers have included Louise Harris, Helga Winold, Irene Sharp, Eric Kim, and Julie Albers. She recently made her Lincoln Center debut soloing with the Juilliard Orchestra led by Alan Gilbert in David Geffen Hall. Andrew Sommer A member of a musical family, double bassist Andrew Sommer was born and raised in Atlanta. He was always interested in the double bass, and in middle school he began informal lessons with his father, the late Atlanta Symphony Orchestra double bassist Douglas Sommer. He won the co-principal bass position of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America in the program’s inaugural season. In recent summers, he was a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra and he also attended Aspen Music Festival. He is in his final year of graduate studies at Juilliard with Al Laszlo. • Irene Diamond Graduate Fellowship, Homer and Constance Mensch Scholarship in Double Bass.
