Drowning love’s lonely hour in deep twilight of rest, And hiding their tossing manes and their tumultuous feet. The nineteenth Autumn has come upon me Since I first made my count; I saw, before I had well finished, When You Are Old All suddenly mount (The Rose, 1893) And scatter wheeling in great broken rings Upon their clamorous wings. When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, I have looked upon those brilliant creatures, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look And now my heart is sore. Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; All’s changed since I, hearing at twilight, How many loved your moments of glad grace, The first time on this shore, And loved your beauty with love false or true, The bell-beat of their wings above my head, But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you, Trod with a lighter tread. And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Unwearied still, lover by lover, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled They paddle in the cold, And paced upon the mountains overhead Companionable streams or climb the air; And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. Their hearts have not grown old; Passion or conquest, wander where they will, Attend upon them still. But now they drift on the still water Mysterious, beautiful; Among what rushes will they build, By what lake’s edge or pool Delight men’s eyes, when I awake some day To find they have flown away? 6 CAL PERFORMANCES CAL PERFORMANCES 7 ORCHESTRA ROSTER CHORUS ROSTER RUSSIAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA VOLTI Mikhail Pletnev, Music Director & Principal Conductor Robert Geary, Artistic Director Violin I Cello Horn Soprano Tenor Alexei Bruni, Concertmaster Alexander Gottgelf, Principal Igor Makarov, Principal Jennifer Ashworth Ben Barr Tatiana Porshneva, Olesya Gavrikova Alexey Serov, Assistant Principal Kristen Brown Jesse Buddington Assistant Concertmaster Svetlana Vladimirova Victor Bushuyev Katherine Gerber Michael Eisenberg Yana Gerasimova Kirill Varyash Vladimir Slabchuk Barbara Heroux Paul Ingraham Natalia Anurova Maxim Tarnorutsky Denis Volodichev Amy McKenzie Carl L.
