Gree ngs, Bobcat Families! The library is bustling with students eager to check out the latest book acquisi ons from Folle ! We are so excited to provide this invaluable service to our kids. The students are using the online Des ny system to search for books, place them on hold using their personal accounts and enjoying AR tes ng opportuni es using the IPads in the library. The library staff are looking forward to the new facility and were told that we would have our own cart of laptops next year! Imagine the possibili es! Welcome to our Kindergarten students who are checking out books for the FIRST TIME! How excited these youngsters are as they peruse the library cart looking for a literary gem to take home. Parents, please use this opportunity to read with your child so that they can experience the joy of hearing your voice and receiving comprehension assistance. I recall reading to my own children when they were young and I truly miss those years! Please be reminded that books need to be returned on me in the same condi on that they were checked out…there are fines for overdue books and ones that are damaged. Our students need to learn to be responsible and respec ul of school property. Thank you, for your con nued support and for encouraging your child to read! Fondly, Mrs. Kennedy Ms. Louis
4 Physical Education
Students have been working SUPER HARD on improving their fitness in 2018! We kicked off the New Year with a fitness unit in PE to start the year off trying to work on our cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. Students ran their second PACER test of the year to test their cardiovascular strength. Hoping for improvement from the beginning of the school year we compared both scores to get an idea of where our school is as a whole. Students work in small groups at sta ons going through a circuit workout doing various fitness based ac vi es. Each sta on lasts about two and a half minutes where students are constantly working and striving for improvements. We also introduced a new fitness game "Speedway", where students use a combina on of soccer, ul mate football and handball. Speedway is a fast paced game that requires a lot of movement, various skills and strategic tac cs. The game aims to increase student’s aerobic capacity and cardiovascular endurance!

5 Music News
Happy New Year 2018! Welcome back to the 2nd Semester of the 2017-2018 school year. I have begun to meet new classes and new students for music in the second half of the year. We are reviewing class procedures, just like at the very beginning of the school year. We are learning about maintaining a steady beat, the music staff, note names, counting notes and rests, rhythms, and will be getting into music from different cul- tures. The 3rd grade classes will be learning how to read music and play the recorder, later this year. A letter about purchasing a recorder through the school will be going home in the near future. The Second Semester Chorus group started meeting after school on Thursday, January 18. We meet every other Thursday, for the rest of the school year. After school Chorus meets from 2:45-3:45 p.m. on the following dates: February 1, February 15, March 1, March 15, March 29, April 12, April 26, and May 10. We are looking to perform for a Spring Program. No date has been set as of yet. We will keep you posted in the near future. Mr. Karl Kalis K-6 Music Teacher
6 Great News from Mrs. Campobasso Learning Resource
Welcome to the third quarter! I want to begin by thanking you for the constant support and reinforcement you are giving your child at home. I believe it is very important to stress the value of education both at school and at home. It is when we are all on the same page that the students can achieve to their highest potential.
Our Wonders Reading program continues to motivate and guide our students through the con- tinuous practice of spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and other skills. Essential questioning will develop enthused discussion among the students to determine what is needed to accomplish certain goals. We will be reading a variety of selections from different genres; from realistic fiction to narrative fiction, from expository text and a biography. Writing skills will be uti- lized with a scope of topics. Students should be reading at least 20-30 minutes a night. Re- member our AR goal- Taping Dr. Walker-Hood to the WALL!!!!!!
In math, the students continue to progress through our Origo and Carnegie Math Program. Many of the students have begun multiplying and dividing in 4th grade with Origo and the 6th graders are rocking Ratios with Carnegie. Many of the students are catching on to the con- cepts and are able to work independently. We have noticed that the students are finding suc- cess with the “MATHia” program and in Math centers they are soaring.
Congratulations to our Spelling Be winner at Burbank Marwa Khanani. She did a wonderful job at the District Spelling Bee in January.
Happy Valentine’s Day and enjoy your President’s Day off!!!! February 19th

7 ART News
From Ginny Gallagher
It is a new semester and a new group of students in the art room. If your child had music last semester, they now have art. This week a parent le er will go home explaining in detail my expecta ons. Briefly, students are expected to behave; listening, following direc ons and caring for materials, as well as being respec ul of the teacher and other students. Students receive a grade for the work they do in class, this is based more on effort then skill. They receive a par cipa on/behavior grade worth three points for how well they behave during class. If a student misbehaves, they are corrected but will lose a point, if the mis‐ behavior con nues they can lose up to 3 points per class. Most students enjoy art and I do not want to allow a few to disrupt the class with con nued misbehavior. Loss of points will effect a student’s overall grade. I hope and strive to make art something that all stu‐ dents enjoy and therefore my expecta ons are told to students at the start of every class. Student artwork comes home as we finish but you can follow me on Twi er where I post students working or the artwork itself. If you have any ques ons or concerns please feel free to email me.

From the Health Department
February is American Heart Month
With all the beautiful red hearts we will see displayed around our schools this month, let’s remember to keep our hearts healthy! According to the American Heart Association, “Healthy students perform better academically, have better attendance, and behave better in class.” Their Life’s Simple 7 for Kids Program is a great way to adopt a healthy heart lifestyle for our students and families. It all begins with a decision to live healthier! Decide TODAY!
As a reminder, with flu season well under way – if you are sick ‐ stay home and get plenty of rest and hydration. Some signs and symptoms people with the flu often feel include: fever* or feeling feverish/chills , cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (very tired), and/or more common in children than adults; vomiting and diarrhea. (*It’s important to note that not everyone with the flu will have a fever). If your child develops these signs/symptoms while at school, you will get a call from the school health aide to pick him/her up. Please make arrangements to have your child promptly picked up. For the safety of your child, and to prevent the spread of disease, we cannot have sick children waiting around the health office; we do not have the space or resources to care for sick children. Please make every effort to have your child promptly picked up. Remember to keep your child home for at least 24 hours following vomiting, diarrhea, or fever (without the use of a fever‐reducing medicine).
