What makes a city? The Delft Research Centres bundle TU Delft’s excellent research and provide integrated solutions for today’s and tomorrow’s problems in society. OTB Research Institute for Housing, Urban and Mobility Studies and the Faculties Planning for of Architecture, Technology, Policy and Management and Civil Engineering and Geosciences participate in this Delft Research Centre. ‘quality of place’ The case of Urban quality is generally considered increasingly important for urban high-speed train station competitiveness. Nevertheless, large urban redevelopment schemes often fail to provide sufficient quality from a user’s perspective. This study therefore area redevelopment investigates the role of urban quality in large-scale urban redevelopment, which is here elaborated in terms of Richard Florida’s concept of quality of place. In a number of extensive case studies, it focuses on prestigious redevelopment projects around the high-speed rail stations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Lille. It provides an analysis of the role of urban quality in the development of these projects, as well as some insights in the applicability of quality of place in a wider Dutch context. In addition, the study advocates a more open and flexible planning process, based on a distinctly long-term perspective on urban quality. In a country dominated by water and often by low roofs of cloud, high-rise construction is almost by definition a Statement. Perhaps this is the reason why it has been such a controversial topic for so long, with supporters and opponents assailing one another with contrasting ideas on urban development and urbanism. Particularly in historical settings, these ‘new icons’ were long regarded as an erosion of our historical legacy, as big- business megalomania. Such a style does not harmonize with this cosy, homely country, it was maintained, with its consultative structures and penchant for regulation. Moreover, high-rise construction hardly ever took place anyway because there were infinitely more opportunities for opponents to apply delaying tactics than there were for proponents to deploy means of acceleration, and postponement soon meant abandonment. Nevertheless, a turning point now seems to have been reached. Everyone is falling over one another to allow architectonic climaxes determine the new urban identity. Could it be more inconsistent? In order to discover the origins of the almost emotional resistance to high-rise construction and why attitudes have changed, we shall first examine the physical conditions and the socio-economic context of the Netherlands.

    Sybold van Ravesteyn. Sybold van Ravesteyn, geboren als Sijbold van Ravesteijn (Rotterdam, 18 februari 1889 - Laren (Noord-Holland), 23 november 1983) was een Nederlands architect. Leven en werk Sybold van Ravesteyn had een grote kennis van gewapend beton. In het begin leek hij een aanhanger van het Nieuwe Bouwen, maar al vroeg experimenteerde hij met barokke krullen en andere ronde vormen. In 1921 werd hij architect voor de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Zijn eerste eigen ontwerp waren een goederenloods en kantoren in Arnhem (1924). In Utrecht ontwierp Van Ravesteyn rond 1932 aan de Prins Hendriklaan (112) voor zichzelf en zijn gezin een woonhuis dat nog gebaseerd was op het Nieuwe Bouwen. Na een reis naar Rome begon hij van het modernisme af te wijken door ornamenten en decoraties in zijn ontwerpen te gaan gebruiken. In 1938 ontwierp hij een neobarokke uitbreiding voor schouwburg Kunstmin in Dordrecht. Ook gebouw De Holland aan de Burgemeester de Raadtsingel in Stichting Cultureel erfgoed Enschede. [2016] Pagina 1 Sybold van Ravesteyn. Dordrecht werd door hem getekend. Een ander beroemd ontwerp van Van Ravesteyn is Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam(bouwjaar 1939-1941). Van Ravesteyn is daarmee een van de weinige architecten ter wereld die een gehele dierentuin naar eigen inzicht heeft mogen ontwerpen. Van Ravesteyn heeft door heel Nederland voor de Nederlandse Spoorwegen stations en seinhuizen ontworpen. Een groot aantal hiervan, waaronder het Station Rotterdam Centraal (1957) en de stationsgebouwen van -Blaak, - Hofplein en -Zuid, Utrecht Centraal en 's-Hertogenbosch, zijn inmiddels weer gesloopt. Dicht bij het station van Maastricht staat nog altijd een recent gerestaureerd seinhuisje van Van Ravesteyn.

    Bewonersvereniging Provenierswijk (inventaris 1972-1997) BinnenWijkorgaan Centrum Noord, dat in 1971 gemeentelijke erkenning verkreeg, werd in 1974 de Werkgroep Provenierswijk opgericht. Het archief geeft vooralsnog geen uitsluitsel over de vraag of deze werkgroep dezelfde is als de Wijkvereniging Provenier die eveneens in 1974 het licht zag (statuten 18- 3-1974; invnr. 1) noch wat de relatie was met het Haarlemmerstraatcomité (invnr. 190-192). Vanaf eind 1976 ging de werkgroep als Aktiegroep Provenierswijk door het leven. Op 28-2-1984 werd de AktiegroepProvenierswijk omgezet in een stichting. De Werkgroep Woonlasten van de Aktiegroep Provenierswijk werd datzelfde jaar omgevormd tot de Huurdersvereniging Provenierswijk Sterker door strijd (SDS; statuten 5-6-1984). Eind 1987 werd besloten tot een fusie van actiegroep en huurdersvereniging. Vanaf 1988 heet de organisatie Bewonersvereniging Provenierswijk Het archief is openbaar en kan worden geraadpleegd in Gemeentearchief Rotterdam, Hofdijk 651. Dat vertelde een jongere die meedeed aan ons programma ‘Van intentie naar Loonstrook’. Want ondanks alles blijft zijn droom overeind staan. Of een moeder die sinds ze met een Samen Leren coach naar de bibliotheek is geweest, ziet hoeveel plezier haar zoon in lezen heeft. Bewoners die geen schuldstress meer hebben, of blij zijn dat ze met hulp weer zijn gaan bewegen. Het lijkt eenvoudig, maar het is niet makkelijk als je, zoals sommigen, uit een diep dal moet komen. In ons jaarverslag staan veel van deze voorbeelden. Elke stap die mensen zetten, ongeacht welke leeftijd, daar zijn wij trots op. Stapjes die hen helpen te komen waar ze graag willen zijn. Dat maakt ons blij. Iedere dag opnieuw. Voor ons staat voorop dat we het samen doen. Met de mensen voor wie wij werken, onze vrijwilligers, medewer- kers en partners. Samen doen we het werk. En we stimu- leren dit vooral ondernemend te doen. Met ruimte voor initiatieven, nieuwe ideeën en inzichten. Nog mooier is als je al doende ontdekt waar je goed in bent, wat anders kan en hoe je je talenten kunt ontwikkelen. Daar staan de let- ters SOL voor: Samen Ondernemend Leren. Als organisatie streefden wij er het afgelopen jaar naar onze uitgangspunten waar te maken. Soms ging het fan- tastisch, soms gewoon goed, en soms wat minder. Maar ook daar staan wij voor: door te vallen ontdek je iedere keer wat beter kan.
