We are being put to the test. We are suffering and mourning our losses, and this crisis is testing the limits of our system. It is also a test of our great European solidarity and of our institutions, which acted fast at the start of the crisis to deploy measures to protect us. The crisis is still ongoing, but we will see the light at the end of the tunnel, and by fighting together, we will beat the virus. Never have we faced such a challenging situation in peacetime. The fight against the pandemic is our top priority and everything that is needed to stop it and eradicate the virus must be done. We welcome and strongly support all the actions developed by governments, EU institutions, local authorities, scientists, medical staff, volunteers, citizens and economic actors. In this tremendously difficult situation, we are also facing another crisis: a shock to our economy tougher than the 2008 crisis. The major shock to the economy and workers created by the pandemic calls for a strong coordinated economic response. We therefore welcome the declaration of European leaders stating that they will do “whatever it takes” to tackle the social and economic consequences of this crisis. However, what worked for the 2008 financial crisis may not be sufficient to overcome this one. The economic recovery will only come with massive investments to protect and create jobs and to support all the companies, regions and sectors that have suffered from the economy coming to a sudden halt.

    THE NEW EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT KEY COMMITTEE COMPOSITION 31 JULY 2019 INTRODUCTION After several marathon sessions, the European Council agreed on the line-up for the EU “top jobs” on 2 July 2019. The deal, which notably saw German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU, EPP) surprisingly designated as the next European Commission (EC) President, meant that the European Parliament (EP) could proceed with the election of its own leadership on 3 July. The EPP and Renew Europe (formerly ALDE) groups, in line with the agreement, did not present candidates for the EP President. As such, the vote pitted the S&D’s David-Maria Sassoli (IT) against two former Spitzenkandidaten – Ska Keller (DE) of the Greens and Jan Zahradil (CZ) of the ACRE/ECR, alongside placeholder candidate Sira Rego (ES) of GUE. Sassoli was elected President for the first half of the 2019 – 2024 mandate, while the EPP (presumably EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber) would take the reins from January 2022. The vote was largely seen as a formality and a demonstration of the three largest Groups’ capacity to govern. However, Zahradil received almost 100 votes (more than the total votes of the ECR group), and Keller received almost twice as many votes as there are Greens/EFA MEPs. This forced a second round in which Sassoli was narrowly elected with just 11 more than the necessary simple majority. Close to 12% of MEPs did not cast a ballot. MEPs also elected 14 Vice-Presidents (VPs): Mairead McGuinness (EPP, IE), Pedro Silva Pereira (S&D, PT), Rainer Wieland (EPP, DE), Katarina Barley (S&D, DE), Othmar Karas (EPP, AT), Ewa Kopacz (EPP, PL), Klara Dobrev (S&D, HU), Dita Charanzová (RE, CZ), Nicola Beer (RE, DE), Lívia Járóka (EPP, HU) and Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI) were elected in the first ballot, while Marcel Kolaja (Greens/EFA, CZ), Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL, EL) and Fabio Massimo Castaldo (NI, IT) needed the second round.

    EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson Brussels, 30 October 2020 Dear Commissioner Johansson, It has been nearly two months since the fire in Moria left more than 12,000 persons destitute and the response from Greece, the EU and member states has been pitiful. Whilst responding to urgent needs warranted setting up a temporary camp on Lesvos, we now risk seeing this temporary solution turning into a permanent one. But, based on the account of refugees themselves and experienced service providers, the conditions in the new camp are worse than the conditions in Moria. Almost 8,000 people – mostly families with children – have been forced to live in tents and face dire living conditions. Rapid protection assessments1 carried out at the end of September identified numerous risks to the people living in the camp. These include limited access to food with reports of residents fainting out of hunger, inadequate measures against Covid-19 as well as no drainage nor sewerage system on site, with only one toilet being shared by twenty people and no access for persons with physical disabilities. Due to a lack of running water, residents are forced to wash themselves in the sea – this raises a risk to children who could drown. This lack of sanitary facilities coupled with the insufficient lighting exposes women to an increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence. Residents are unable to access health services or legal aid. Children have no access to education and truly risk becoming a lost generation. We are increasingly concerned that the camp, located by the beach, will not withstand the against adverse weather conditions, such as strong wind and rain.

The European Commission is working hard to design a recovery plan aiming at supporting workers and companies. The crisis has emphasized how important robust health care systems and social safety nets are to ensure the most vulnerable are not left behind following a cut of their incomes. As showed by the 2020 OECD Global Business Conduct, the pandemic is also badly hitting our partner countries, some of them being low- or middle - income countries where people do not enjoy our social standards and infrastructures to help them to thrive in case of hardship. We would like to draw your attention to the living and working conditions of the textile workers, most of them being female workers, that were already appalling before the crisis. The cancellation of orders by many European companies and their refusal to compensate local suppliers despite their societal commitments and contractual obligations pose severe problems for millions of people, the workers, their families and communities. They cannot rely on the authorities nor on the social model to provide them with decent living conditions. Such behaviour from our companies is in stark opposition with the Sustainable Development Goals which are a compass for the action of your Commission. Being the first global importer of garments, the EU bears a special responsibility vis-à-vis the downstream workers.

    Her Excellency Mrs. Angela Merkel Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Bundeskanzleramt Willy-Brandt-Straße 1 10557 Berlin - Germany 9 December 2020 Joint MEP letter to Germany to suspend submarine export to Turkey Dear Chancellor, in the light of ongoing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, as Greek and German Members of the European Parliament we call on the German government to immediately suspend the export of German submarines, its components and spare parts as well as all related maintenance activities. Our appeal follows the European Parliament’s resolution of 17 September 2020 on Arms export: implementation of Common Position 2008/944/CFSP (para 17) which: calls on the VP / HR, for as long as Turkey continues with its current illegal, unilateral actions in the Eastern Mediterranean that run counter to the sovereignty of any EU Member State (notably Greece and Cyprus) and international law, and does not engage in dialogue based on international law, to introduce an initiative in the Council for all EU Member States to halt arms export licensing to Turkey in accordance with the Common Position Turkey’s recent explorative activities for natural gas deposits has led to an escalation of a simmering dispute between Turkey and Greece over maritime rights in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. We are extremely concerned about Turkey’s threats of military action against EU Member States in the Eastern Mediterranean and fear that Turkey could employ submarines produced in Germany in this conflict. Therefore, we urge the German government to undertake urgent measures to suspend in relation to Turkey the export of submarines, its components and spare parts - largely produced by German Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems and assembled in Turkey – as well as related maintenance.
