Copy deadline for the May issue: Monday, 9th April 2 Boothy’s Bit A huge THANK YOU to the 34 senior members who answered last month’s pleas by running in the Mid Lancs League XC fixture at Leyland on 3rd March, including a few who had never done a cross-country race before. The number of Clayton runners in and around the tent generated a great atmosphere and it had the desired effect—the men’s ‘A’ team preserved our first division status; the M40 & M50 teams won bronze medals; the M60 team, silver. Results and final league standings are on p26-28. It just shows that, if we can field sufficient runners, the club has the quality to achieve success. Tuesday Summer Training One of my favourite days comes up on 3rd April, this year: the start of summer training—no more running in the dark! There are some changes to the format. Coach Roche will supervise training on the roads and trails around Worsthorne on Tuesdays throughout the summer months, while fell training (almost) follows the traditional pattern of a different venue each month. Because of the earlier start (6 .30pm) in April and September, we have chosen Sabden as the venue, owing to its central location. (Full details on p24.) Because of the lack of pubs in Sabden, post-run re-hydration will be at the Four Alls, Higham . From mid April junior runners will join us on the fells. Andy Armstrong is looking forward to being overwhelmed by offers of support (see p20). The Summer Series begins on 1st May at Barley. This year, there will be five races, including a relay and we will be joined by run- ners from Trawden AC & Accrington RR (full details on p4). Mention of running in the dark reminds me of a campaign to adopt British Summer Time throughout the year (2 hours ahead of GMT in the summer months), which would give us more light in the evenings all year. If you would like to find out more, or give the campaign your support, go to www. lighterlater .org for more information. News Update • My apologies for omitting news of the 2012 Club Championship Races from the February Newsletter. The format will be a single race on the fell, road and country (details on p4). • Just in: new long-sleeved lightweight training tops, complete with club logo. See p14 to find out how you can get your hands on one. • Pendle FR, including the Lancs & English Junior Championship takes place on 7th April. RO, David Bailey needs help—see p15. 3 JACK BETNEY 1933-2012 As I was putting together this month’s Harrier I received news of Jack’s death. Jack overcame serious injury in his youth to become a member of Clayton-le- Moors Harriers in 1968. He achieved great success at a great range of distances and across all disciplines, especially as a vet, despite suffering very serious injuries in a car accident. Our condolences go to Jack’s wife, his family and friends. 2012 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Road Race: Burnley Lions 10K RR 7.00pm Friday 25th May, Colne Cricket Club www.pendleandburnleygrandprix.co.uk/ Fell Race: Kentmere Horseshoe FR 1.00pm Sunday, 22nd July, Kentmere Village Hall Pre-entry advised NB: Change of date—not as in FRA Calendar www.fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=2052 Cross Country Race: To be decided when 2012-2013 cross country fixture list is published. It is great to see Jean Rawlinson back to racing well - first LV50 and LV60 in the Stan Bradshaw Round, well done Jean. Linda Bostock has also been having some good races, first LV50 at Bleasdale for one. Wendy Dodds was third lady and first in all Vet categories at Black Combe. Lisa Richardson was the only Clayton runner at the Dark Un - a night race on Darwen moors - and came in third lady. Well done to everyone! The first of the English Championship races will have taken place by the time you read this (see below) ; if you are thinking of doing the Coledale Horse- shoe, the second race in the championship, it is pre-entry by 2nd April. Entries are also now open for the Great Lakes Run - one that looks like it will benefit from a recce! Jean Captains Lead by Example English Fell Championship – Lad’s Leap (A Short: 6M/1700’) Fell Captains, Jean Brown & Dave Motley led by example at Saturday’s English Fell Championship opener in sunny Derbyshire. Bingley’s young star, Emma Clayton eclipsed her 111 rivals, but Jean ran brilliantly to finish in 22 nd place; 8 th vet in a time of 61.20. Our second counter was Wendy Dodds (37 th & first LV60 in 65.05). Anna Kelly completed the team in 47 th place (68.18). The team finished 9 th overall, 2 nd LV40 team and was well supported by: Lorraine Slater (59 th ; 70.47), Alison Athroll (63 rd ; 71.16), Lisa Richardson (64 th ; 71.26) and Alison Dugdale (76 th ; 73.50). The men tackled the 6 miles of bog, rock and heather an hour later than the women. The high quality field was led home by ex-champion Simon Bailey in a time of 44.16. Captain Motley finished in 97 th place (54.23) – it’s no mean feat to get into the top 100 of over 300 starters in the first race of the championships. Cross country captain, Dave Edmondson was our next finisher (108 th ; 55.35), closely followed by Paul Shackleton (114 th ; 56.12). The MV50 team, comprising Geoff Gough (119 th [8 th MV50]; 56.37), Mark Aspinall (148 th ; 58.34) and Jack Holt (165 th ; 60.31) finished a close second to Burnden RR in the men’s MV50 team competition. Jack was 3 rd MV60, while Pete Booth was 5 th (172 nd overall; 60.55), just behind Ivan Wigham (169 th ; 60.44). 6 In his first championship race, Dominic Carr ran strongly to 190 th place (61.49) defeating dad, Kieran, who was 3 rd MV65 (208 th ; 63.00) and Mark Nutter (218 th ; 63.49).
